The good news is that when

Moshiach comes, hunger will

be eradicated! Maimonides

explains that there will be no

more famine, and that all

delights, like food and clothing,

will be as abundant as dust.

Imagine—enough food for

everybody in the world, and whatever food

you want! And let’s not forget the big feast

that will celebrate Moshiach’s coming. The

Shor HaBor (wild ox) and Leviathan (a super-

big fish) will wrestle it out, and then we’ll

get to partake in the biggest banquet ever.

Bon Appetite!

In Biblical times, and

even for centuries afterwards, only

locally grown produce was available. Many

people were farmers and grew their own

food. But, if there was a food shortage or

famine, not much could be done, since it was

so hard to preserve the food and keep it

fresh. Eating spoiled and rotten food often

brought on sickness and disease.

Because it was so hard to keep food fresh,

people were limited to eating whatever food

was available in their areas—no kosher

Chinese food back then!

Nowadays, foods fromall over the world aretransported right to your localsupermarket! Fruits and vegetables thatwere once limited to certain seasons areavailable for purchase year-round. And, thenumber of food items under koshersupervision is growing every day! Thoughonly 3% of the American population works inagriculture today, these farmers not onlyproduce enough food to feed everyone in theU.S., but also enough to export to othercountries. Breakthroughs in science andtechnology now make it possible for crops togrow in places like deserts and swamps—placeswhere food never could have grown in the past!

Although there is enough food for everyone inthe world, not all people have access to it. Inrecent years, organizations havebeen working hard to bring an endto world hunger. Communitiesaround the world hold food drivesto help those in need. As time goeson, there are more and more ways ofgetting food and relief to peoplesuffering from hunger.

Wetand

Wild! The story of Passover is all wet! When the Nile River turnedto blood; when the Yam Suf(The Sea of Reeds) split toallow the Jewish Nation topass through; when we dip avegetable into salt water atthe Seder; it’s clear that goodold H2O is an important part

of this holiday!

Let’s find out somesurprising facts about

water!

Soda Invites ThirstThink of your favorite soda. Your taste

buds may take a liking to the fizzytaste, and it’s the drink you grab

when thirst comes your way.

But like coffee and tea, although it’s mainlywater based, it isn’t exactly water’s best friend. We can blame that on the caffeine it contains, which makes it a ‘diuretic,’ meaning that itprevents water from battling your thirst.

But I’m guessing the Egyptians would’vepreferred soda anytime over drinking blood.

To Chop 8ooo ft. in HalfThe deep end of a swimming pool is around 10 feet deep.

Now imagine 800 tall people piled on top of eachother... standing on their tippy toes! That’s thedepth of the water in the Sea of Reeds thatG-d split to allow the Jewish People to walk

through on dry land!

The Thirsty Long Nosed Big GuyAn elephant drinks a LOT of water! The average human onlyneeds to drink about 2 liters a day—the amount that would fill 4regular water bottles. An elephant drinks around 200 liters aday... the amount that would fill a whopping 400 bottles!

The Nile River: A ‘Citizen’ of Nine Countries

Everyone knows that the Nile River is themain river in Egypt that turned into blood.

But did you know that the Nile is thelargest river in the word, and flowsthrough eight other countries, too?

The year is 1525.

Although hiding in the shadows ofnight, you can make out the forms oftwo men, dressed in black. The heavysack they carry is suspicious indeed. What could be inside? It’s a sadburden they bear: a child who diedof a serious illness just hours before.

Their sly mission: To make the Jews

of the city look guilty of the littleboy’s death, to stir up hatred andviolence, to falsely accuse the Jews ofkilling a child and using his blood tobake their Passover Matzah! What better way to hatch this evil“blood libel” than by placing thebody into the cellar of the great rabbiand community leader, Rabbi BezalelLowe?

Stealthily, the two men tiptoethrough the dark, quiet streets. Theyare so close now...

Suddenly, a loud cry pierces the air!The windows in Rabbi Bezalel’shouse light up! The two men, surethey have been spotted, drop thesack and run for their lives.

Actually, the commotion was due tosomething else completely: thatnight, just at that crucial moment, ason was born to Rabbi Bezalel! Thanks to this brand new baby, theevil plan for a blood libel was foiled, and the Jews of Poznan were saved!

protecting Jews from hostile plotsand violence.

Known as the Maharal, RabbiYehudah Lowe was appointedRabbi of Nikolsberg, Moravia atthe tender age of twenty. Later inlife, he became the Rabbi of Prague.

The Maharal of Prague founded ayeshiva academy famous for itsTalmudic scholars.

Rabbi Yehudah Lowe was wellversed in Torah, and he was alsoknowledgeable in math, science andthe study of astronomy.

Hearing of the Maharal’s brilliance,Emperor Rudolph II frequentlyturned to the rabbi for deep

discussions on a wide variety oftopics. Thanks to the friendship ofthe rabbi and the emperor,Rudolph II fought to nullify evildecrees that threatened the safetyand security of the Jewish People.

Despite the emperor’s best efforts, the many enemies of the Jews kepttrying to accuse them of shockingdeeds, especially at Passover. Thesituation became so dangerous, thatthe Maharal felt it necessary tocreate a protector for the Jews, aspecial creature called the “Golem.”

Formed from mud at the riverbankand brought to life with theMaharal’s mystical knowledge, the

Golem patrolled the dark streets ofPrague, looking for signs ofdanger... thwarting the forces ofevil... exposing blood libel plotsthat would put Jewish lives at risk.

When the years of danger hadpassed, the Maharal took theGolem up to the attic of hissynagogue in Prague.

The rabbi put the creature to restamong the torn pages of holy booksthat were stored there, warning thatno one was ever to enter the atticwhere the Golem lay. His task wasover, and presumably, the Golemremains in that attic to this veryday!

‘C’ is for cookie, that’s good enough for me…

Hello, there, Cookie Monster. Are youenjoying your last cookies for 8 days?

Whaaaat?? Me don’t know what youtalking about, Matzah Monster! No cookies?

You must know that Passover is coming, andwe do not eat any bread, called Chametz!

Oh, phew! Cookie Monster don’t like bread, just cookies! A round cookie with a bite outof it looks like a C…

Yes, but on Passover, we don’t eat bread orcookies.

Whaaat?!! No cookies?

That’s right, only Matzah. Any flour made from wheat, orfrom four other grains (barley, rye, spelt and oats) can’t beallowed to bake and rise. That’s called Chametz. It showshow boastful you are. Matzah doesn’t rise; it’s flat, and sowe can eat it. It shows how humble we are. It’s what theJews ate when they left Egypt!

But, but! Me like cookies! And cookies are flat, just likeMatzah!

Cookie Monster, the cookie dough itself is Chametz! Anyflour made from wheat, barley, rye, oats, or spelt, whichis mixed with water or other liquids, becomes Chametzafter 18 minutes have passed. When baking Matzah, theflour and water are mixed, rolled, baked in a super hotoven, and are ready long before 18 minutes have gone by!

That sounds OK, but after Passover, me want cookies!

Ha ha! And you’ll get them! But for now, M is for Matzah, that’s good enough for me!

Well, I’ve got my bag of Chametz, spoon, and feather from my search for

Chametz last night. I had lots of feathers tochoose from, hee hee! Now I just need aplace to burn the Chametz I found…

Hey! Watch it!

I just want to use your trash can to burnthis Chametz! Tonight is Passover, and wecannot have any Chametz.

All the Chametz you had in yourhouse fits in that bag?

13

This has been brought to you by:

M 8the letter & the number

Of course not. First I cleaned for a few days, tomake sure there were no crumbs lying around.

Cleaning?!!! Yuck! Why can’t you just sell yourChametz to a non-Jew?

I already sold everything I want to use later, afterPassover. I plan to buy it back. The Chametz inthis bag is what I found last night. I had to makesure I didn’t miss anything when I was cleaning. Iactually put out 10 pieces of bread, to make sureI’d find something that I can burn today. So can I please use your trash can?

I guess so. There’s probably some specialprayer to say, right?

You got it! Once we finish these 4 easy steps:cleaning, selling, searching, and burning,we’re ready for Passover! See page 26 for detailed instructions.

CHAMETZBefore Passover, we need to search anddestroy (or sell) any trace of Chametz—leaven. But exactly which foods are those?Chametz is any food product made from thefollowing five grains: wheat, barley, rye, oats, orspelt. When flour made of these grains comes incontact with water and is left to rise for more than18 minutes... that’s Chametz! We are not permittedto eat, own, or derive any benefit from Chametzduring all 8 days of Passover. So, take out yourbrooms and start cleaning, because Passover isalmost here!

Shaul was an impressive young man: tall, handsome, and well-liked. Most importantly,Shaul was a very righteous person: always

doing good for others, extremely humble, and nevercommitting a sin in his life.

One day, Shaul’s father approached his son with arequest. Some donkeys had wandered off, and hewanted Shaul to search for them.

Shaul made his way through many villages and towns, looking for his father’s missing donkeys. Eventuallyhe came to the gates of the city of Rama, the citywhere the great Prophet Shmuel lived.

“What better person to ask forinformation than a Navi, aprophet?” Shaul thought. Shaulmade his way to the town gates, when whom did he see hurryingtoward him? The Navi himself!

Shaul had no idea, but ShmuelHaNavi had been told to expect avisit that day from the person whowould become the new ruler of the Children of Israel.

Shmuel HaNavi invited Shaul to stay and dine withhim. He told them there was no need to worry aboutthe donkeys. They had already been found. And, theNavi continued, Shaul need no longer concern himselfwith activities such as locating missing animals.

Rather, G-d had directed the young man to this place,

just at this time, so Shmuel could tell Shaul that hewas to become the first Jewish King of Israel!

During his reign, Shaul fought many successful battlesagainst the enemies of Israel. He was a great leaderand guided his people with humility and strength.

However, after one battle against the fierce enemies ofthe Jews called Amalek, Shaul didn’t listen perfectly toG-d’s directions. Shaul was told not to leave anysurvivors alive, even the animals belonging to Amalek.

Shaul did allow some survivors, and as a result, thewicked Haman, a descendent of Amalek was born.

A king must always listen to G-d’s Wordprecisely, and G-d informed Shaulthat his children would notcontinue to rule the Jewish People. The kingdom would be takenfrom Shaul and given to... Shaul’sson-in-law, King David, and to hischildren forever after!

At the end of his life, Shaul was about tofight against the huge Pelishti army and found himselfafraid to go to war. He asked G-d for guidance, through the prophets, but received no answer. Finally,Shaul heard the bad news that he and his sons wouldlose their lives in battle, but nevertheless, he heroicallywent to war and fought for his people.

Join us next time as we take a closer look at Shaul’s veryown son-in-law, Kind David!
