Orientations are held at the IPRC on 2nd Thursdays at 7 PM and 3rd Saturdays every month at 3 PM for new and prospective IPRC users. Participants are given a tour of the facility, an outline of policies and procedures, as well as membership information.

AbOuT THE IPRC

The Independent Publishing Resource Center facilitates creative expression and identity by providing individual access to the resources and tools for the creation of independently published media and art.

Since its inception in 1998, the center has been dedicated to encouraging the growth of visual and literary publishing community by offering a space to gather and exchange information and ideas, as well as to produce work. The IPRC is an Oregon 501 (c) (3) Nonprofit organization.

ZINE LIbRARyOur zine library has more than 7,500 self-published and inde-pendently produced publications. We have one of the largest zine libraries in the world. You don’t have to be a member to check out a zine either! From art to comics to music, you’ll be able to find something good! The zine catalog is also on our website at library.iprc.org.

WORKSHOPSMake the IPRC your educational resource. The center offers a variety of workshops related to publishing, writing, comics, and much more. The workshops are designed to give participants hands on experience, which they can apply to their individual projects. Pre-registration is required as spots are limited. Register online at iprc.org or at our volunteer desk.

WORKSPACENeed a place to staple your zine? A copier? A computer to layout your book? We’ve got all that and more.

The IPRC offers access to resources and equipment to aid in the production and distribution of publications at an affordable rate. We have new iMac computers with Adobe Creative Suite 6 and MacBook Pro laptops. There are also color and black & white copiers, letterpress studio, perfect binding machine, silk screen studio, resource books, art supplies, work tables, a guillotine cutter, scrap paper, typewriters and more!

SPACE RESERVATIONWe are happy to host meetings, groups, and brain trusts. However, in order to better serve you, reservations are apprecated. To reserve a classroom or other space, (loft, library, etc.) email A.M. O’Malley at iprcworkshops@gmail.com.

ZINE CANTEENWe love young zinesters! Every Sunday, from noon-5PM, the IPRC becomes the Zine Canteen, a free drop-in space for young people to work on publishing projects with the occasional youth workshop.

OuTREACHOur boundaries extend beyond the walls of the IPRC. The outreach team takes self-pub-lishing to schools, libraries, treatment centers and other venues. Our latest initiative is the Media Action Project (MAP), which teachers media literacy, critical thinking, and making skills to youth.

bOOK RELEASE: “HERE” by LINDSEy KugLER Join Certificate Program alumni Lindsey Kugler to celebrate the official release of her book HERE. Lindsey completed HERE as a student of the IPRC’s Certificate Program in Independent Publishing. The book is published by University of Hell Press, a local Portland imprint.

Eirean Bradley will host the event.

Elissa from Backtalk PDX will give tarot readings.

Sara Renberg will perform musical improv.

Lindsey Kugler will read along with guests Robert Duncan Gray, Johnny No Bueno, Justin Hocking, Liz Moyer and A.M. O’Malley.

This event is free and open to the public. You are encouraged to buy a book.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARCHIVES With your help, the IPRC successfully made the “The Crossing.” For the next stage in our journey, we have to descend down into the depths of our massive uncatalogued archive, to bring a treasure trove of zines back up into the light.

Join us as we burn the midnight oil as we adven-ture into a labyrinth of zines waiting to be read. For 24 hours straight, we’ll read, catalogue, eat delicious food, drink coffee and help build up the world’s largest zine library. With over 20,000 uncatalogued zines, you’re sure to find a treasure. Hardcore Raiders will read for 24 hours, while lighter Spelunkers can simply stop in for a few hours of reading.

TRAVEL WRITINg 101Have you returned from a trip with stories to tell? Are you planning to bring your notebook on your next journey? Taught by Bill Donahue, a journalist who has reported stories in over 20 countries, for magazines ranging from Wired to The Atlantic, this class will help you to turn your travel adven-tures into cogent narratives. We will look at seminal works of travel journalism and the basics of storytelling, character and scene development, as we discuss students’ story ideas and manuscripts.

Instructor Bio: In 25 years of reporting adventures, Bill Donahue has kayaked through the concrete drainage ditch that is the Los Angeles River, ridden all-terrain-vehicles with hardened criminals through the stripmined hills of West Virginia, biked the streets of Shanghai, and snuck into Manuel Noriega’s abandoned beach house in Panama. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New York Times Magazine, Best American Sports Writing, and Best American Travel Writing. He has been nominated for a National Magazine Award two times, and he won the gold medal in the Adventure Travel division of the 2012 Lowell Thomas Awards. With his daughter, Allie, he is the co-editor of the zine, biff. His website is billdonahue.net.

EDITINg 101Grammar errors, typos, factual blunders, and formatting goofs can put a black eye on even the most brilliant writing. That’s where copyediting and proofreading come in! Publishers of every scale and stripe benefit from the process of going over their material with a fine-tooth comb, getting the text spic-and-span, every hyphen and apostrophe in place. In this work-shop, we’ll go over the basic tools and techniques of the copy-editing trade, including:

* Chicago vs. AP style * Developing a style guide * Marking manuscripts (in Word, Adobe) * The stages of copy to proof

Helpful online resources and handouts will get you on the path to grammar nerd-dom!

Instructor Bio: Califia Suntree has been wielding the red pen since the early ‘90s, when she copyedited her high school newspaper. As a grown-up, she worked as an editor at HarperCollins, managing editor of start-up magazine 02138, and copy chief of several other start-up publications in New York. She is currently copy chief of Worth magazine and a freelance copyeditor at Wieden+Kennedy.

LETTERPRESSLearn to set moveable lead type and print on a table-top hand press in the IPRC print shop. You’ll learn the vocabulary of printing and typesetting while getting a feel for this beautiful and historical process.

Leave the class with a printed card and the satisfaction that comes with using 100-year-old equipment! Successful completion of this one-day class allows IPRC members access to open studio print hours so you can keep on printing!

POSTERPRESSExpand your letterpress printing knowledge: the poster press allows you to print on larger format sheets of paper using uniquely designed components. Make broadsides and event posters and learn the fundamentals of this special, fast lock-up flat-bed press. After completion of this class, you will be able to use the poster press during open printshop hours

bEgINNINg SCREENPRINTINgIn this one-day class, students will learn the basics of screen-printing; tools and materials will be covered, as well as tech-niques ranging from pre-press, exposing an emulsion-coated screen, all the way through screen reclamation. Students will be able to print a one-color design of their choice, and should come to class with a black and white image smaller than 8.5˝ x 11 .̋ After taking the IPRC screenprint class, students will have access to the IPRC screenprint studio during open studio hours. WEbSITES 101Open to anyone interested in learning how to build and pro-mote an attractive portfolio website using free services that already exist on the web. The class will explore basic web concepts such as html, CSS and blogging, plus provide tips on how to get people interested in visiting your new web home.

bINDFAST 5The Bind-Fast 5 is the IPRC’s exciting bookbinding machine. Using the Bind-Fast 5, you can bind as many as 30 softcover books or zines per hour. Completion of this workshop autho-rizes IPRC members to use the Bind-Fast during supervised binding hours, so you can take your publishing projects to the next level.

ESPRESSO bOOK MACHINE: bOOK FORMATTINg 101The EBM’s Formatting 101 class you will teach you to get your work ready to produce a print run of your very own paperback books. The class will cover formatting page sizes and margins, cover layout and design, and creating print-ready PDF files, as well as tips on topics ranging from standard font sizes and spacing to copyright-ing and ISBN numbers. By the end of the class you will have prac-ticed all the steps required for printing on the EBM at Powell’s Books and will be prepared to take full advantage of the IPRC and Espresso Book Machine’s new partnership!

Michael D’Alessandro Letterpress,Posterpress, BindingMichael D’Alessandro is a writer, printer, small press publisher and editor. He edits the semiannual literary jour-nal swap/concessions, and is the founder of Bedouin Books, which publishes emerging writ-ers of fiction, non-fiction and poetry with a focus on hand bound books in letterpressed covers. He has been published in various journals and is the author of two books of poetry. He teaches at the IPRC and Marylhurst University

Andrew barton Illustrator, InDesignAndrew is a graduate of Bennington College, where he focused on “book arts” (drawing comics, bookmak-ing, graphic design). He is co-founder of Open Face Records, a collective of musicians and visual artists spread out around the country.

b.T. Livermore Binding, Hand Lettering, ScreenprintingB.T. is a freelance illustrator, printmaker, and self-published comics artist. His illustra-tions appear regularly in the Portland Mercury and his comic series The Life and Time of Baby Otto Zeplin, as well as his other books, always available at Reading Frenzy.

He makes comics and posters and teaches art, screen-printing, and comics through Writers In The Schools, Em Space Book Arts Center and the IPRC.

Séamus burke Pitfalls to Avoid in Self-PublishingSéamus is an American comic artist born and raised in Chicago, IL. His favorite band is Rush.

James helps curate the Spare Room Reading Series, edits c_L books, and eats home-made pizza.

gabby likes to knit, draw comics, and listen to metal all at the same time.

Lia teaches 8th grade sci-ence and writes the zine, The People I Love Best.

Michael runs the small press Perfect Day Publishing.

Cynthia spends her days cooking for the masses, read-ing for leisure, and creating mixed media artwork that includes printmaking, paint-ing, and poetry.

Corin graduated from the Comics Certificate Program and is our IT specialist.

Phillip is a typography en-cyclopedia and a letterpress shop steward.

Fiona is a comics student in our certificate program and screenprinting superviser.
