Orientations are held at the IPRC on 2nd Thursdays at 7 PM and 3rd Saturdays every month at 3 PM for new and prospective IPRC users. Participants are given a tour of the facility, an outline of policies and procedures, as well as membership information.

AbOuT THE IPRC

The Independent Publishing Resource Center facilitates creative expression and identity by providing individual access to the resources and tools for the creation of independently published media and art.

Since its inception in 1998, the center has been dedicated to encouraging the growth of visual and literary publishing community by offering a space to gather and exchange information and ideas, as well as to produce work. The IPRC is an Oregon 501 (c) (3) Nonprofit organization.

ZINE LIbRARyOur zine library has more than 8,000 self-published and independently produced publications. We have one of the largest zine libraries in the world. You don’t have to be a member to check out a zine either! From art to comics to music, you’ll be able to find something good! The zine catalog is also on our website at library.iprc.org.

WORKSHOPSMake the IPRC your educational resource. The center offers a variety of workshops related to publishing, writing, comics, and much more. The workshops are designed to give participants hands on experience, which they can apply to their individual projects. Pre-registration is required as spots are limited. The IPRC offers access to resources and equipment to aid in the production and distribution of publications at an affordable rate. We have new iMac computers with Adobe Creative Suite 6 and Macbook Pro laptops. There are also color and black & white copiers, letterpress studio, perfect binding machine, silk screen studio, resource books, art supplies, work tables, a guillotine cutter, scrap paper, typewriters and more!

ZINE CANTEENWe love young zinesters! Every Sunday, from noon-5PM, the IPRC becomes the Zine Canteen, a free drop-in space for young people to work on publishing projects with the occasional youth workshop.

OuTREACHOur boundaries extend beyond the walls of the IPRC. The outreach team takes self-publishing to schools, libraries, treatment centers and other venues. John Beer is the author of the poetry collection The Waste Land and Other Poems (Canarium Books) and the chapbook Lucinda (Spork Press). Associative and imaginative, his work has been compared to that of John Ashbery. He is a theater columnist for Time Out Chicago and teaches at Portland State University.

Joe Hall is a devout poet. He finds god, saints and saviors in spiders in a woodpile. For Hall, poetry cannot hold anything if it doesn’t break.

IPRC’S 15TH bIRTHDAy bASH!Back in 1998, the Independent Publishing Resource Center was born inside a tiny office space with a single copy machine, a cof-fee maker, and a stack of zines. Fifteen years later, the IPRC is a vital and vibrant community resource, now occupying a dynamic new 4,000 sq. ft. space, featuring Screenprinting and Letterpress studios, fourteen state-of-the-art Mac computers, two class-rooms, a Creative Writing and Comics School, an art gallery, bind-ery, and one of the largest Small Press & Zine Libraries in the country. What was once a scrappy little Center continues to grow and grow–and this June it’s turning the big 15!

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating this major milestone in the IPRC’s history. Please save the date for the IPRC’s 15th Birthday Bash, featuring lots of cake, beer by Ninkasi, and a print sale.

TRADITION: READINg & bOOK LAuNCHJoin Marci Blackman and local PDX writers Cooper Lee Bombardier, Valentine Freeman, Cass J. Hodges and Galadriel Mozee for re-lease of Blackman’s second novel, Tradition, following the story of Gus Weesfree, who witnessed a brutal crime in his hometown of Tradition, Ohio, at the age of 21 and fled, leaving behind the thriving African American community that existed there before and during World War II. Now an old man, he is compelled to confront his past only to find most of his memories buried by urban sprawl.

Marci Blackman is an original member of the touring spoken word troupe, Sister Spit, and co-edited the ground-breaking anthology, Beyond Definition: New Writing from Gay and Lesbian San Francisco. Blackman’s first novel, Po Man’s Child, received the American Library Association’s Stonewall award for Best LGBT Fiction and the Firecracker Alternative Book Award for Best Fiction.

The Certificate Program is a year-long course in Independent Publishing. Participants choose between one of three tracks—Fiction/Nonfiction; Poetry; or Comics/Graphic Novels—and spend between two and three semesters creating and publishing their work.

Have you always wanted to incorporate pictures into your work without the use of appropriated images or clip art? You may not think of yourself as a visual artist but that doesn’t mean you can’t illustrate your own work.

In this class Martha Grover of Somnambulist Zine will help non-artists who wants to illustrate their own stories and zines. The class will cover techniques, tricks and shortcuts designed to quickly tap into your right brain’s capacity for visual and spatial relationships. We will also cover the relationship between text and image and what to keep in mind when crafting our stories. In addition, we will discuss the use of other types of images like maps, graphs and personal photographs.

INTRO TO LETTERPRESSLearn to set moveable lead type and print on a table-top hand press in the IPRC print shop. You’ll learn the vocabulary of print-ing and typesetting while getting a feel for this beautiful and historical process. bEgINNINg SCREENPRINTINgIn this one-day class, students will learn the basics of screen-printing; tools and materials will be covered, as well as tech-niques ranging from pre-press, exposing an emulsion-coated screen, all the way through screen reclamation.

Students will be able to print a one-color design of their choice, and should come to class with a black and white image smaller than 8.5˝ x 11 .̋

CRAFTINg THE EXPERIMENTAL ESSAy WITH CHLOE CALDWELL

There is not one right way to write an essay, and in this course, students will bend the genre of nonfiction by playing with an array of essay forms such as lyric and personal. We will discuss and practice taking events from our lives and whittling them into inventive and dynamic nonfiction. Students will be given a box of tools that will be invaluable to their craft and leave palpably excited about creating narratives out their lives.

TRAVEL WRITINg 101 Have you returned from a trip with stories to tell? Are you plan-ning to bring your notebook on your next journey? Taught by Bill Donahue, a journalist who has reported stories in over 20 countries for magazines ranging from Wired to The Atlantic, this class will help you to turn your travel adventures into cogent narratives. We will look at seminal works of travel journalism and the basics of character and scene development, and also discuss students’ story ideas and manuscripts.

bOOK ARTS 101 In this class students will learn the basics of bookbinding. This class is great for both those who wish to pursue binding their own books and for those who want to hire a bookbinder to bind a project for them. We’ll talk about paper grain, various adhesives, and different papers and their suitability for a range of projects. Students will complete at least three binding structures and will learn some variations on these structures. Examples of numerous binding structures will help inspire your own work.

bINDFAST 5The Bind-Fast 5 is the IPRC’s exciting bookbinding machine. Using the Bind-Fast 5, you can bind as many as 30 softcover books or zines per hour. Michael D’Alessandro Letterpress,Posterpress, BindingMichael D’Alessandro is a writer, printer, small press publisher and editor. He edits the semiannual literary journal swap/concessions, and is the founder of Bedouin Books, which publishes emerging writers of fiction, non-fiction and poetry with a focus on hand bound books in letterpressed covers. He has been published in various journals and is the author of two books of poetry. He teaches at the IPRC and Marylhurst University

Andrew barton Illustrator, InDesignAndrew is a graduate of Bennington College, where he focused on “book arts.” He is co-founder of Open Face Records, a collective of musicians and visual artists spread out around the country.

Marilyn Zornado CalligraphyMarilyn is a former board member of the IPRC and also teaches at the OCAC and AI in Portland.

john Isaacson Screenprinting John grew up in Goleta, California where he started making zines, t-shirts, and music. He has lived in Ireland, Peru, Chile, and China. He makes comics and posters and teaches art, screen-printing, and comics through Writers In The Schools, Em Space Book Arts Center and the IPRC.

Califia Suntree Editing 101Califia has been wielding the red pen since the early ‘90s, when she copyedited her high school news-paper. As a grown-up, she worked as an editor at HarperCollins, man-aging editor of start-up magazine 02138, and copy chief of several other start-up publications in New York. She is currently copy chief of Worth magazine and a freelance copyeditor at Wieden+Kennedy.

Chloe Caldwell Crafting the Experimental EssayChloe is the author of the essay collection, Legs Get Led Astray (Future Tense Books, April 2012) and the e-book The New Age Camp (Thought Catalog, 2012). She is the founder and curator of the Hudson River Loft Reading Series and has taught Creative Writing workshops at Omega Teen Camp, The Hudson Opera House, and Crow Arts Manor. Chloe lives in Portland, Oregon.

Registration Policy

• You may register for workshops online or in person at the IPRC. Full payment for the class must be received at the time of registration.

• Bring any material fees when you attend your workshop.

• You may cancel your reservation within 7 days of a work-shop for a full refund.

• If a workshop is canceled because of lack of enrollment, you’ll receive a 100% refund.

• Members receive first listed price in course descriptions. Youth (8 – 18) receive member price for any non-youth workshops. Please contact with questions regarding age appropriateness.
