M.V.P: Paul Clinton, Grandview Little Leaguem Weideman Editor Originally Published in Volume 13 Issue 8

Paul Clinton has seen the benefts o orga-

nized little leagues so he does what he can to

help out Grandview Little League in Des Moines.

First o all, little leagues give kids a place

to go or much o their summer breaks rom

school. But its the kids and everyone else

nvolved that are important to Clinton.

Its just enjoyable, says Clinton. You meet a

    ot o parents, grandparents, kids.

Clinton says hes now coaching kids whose

parents he also coached when they went

through the Grandview program. The league

    eatures tee-ball, coach pitch, intermediate

    evels and all-star teams.

Aside rom being a coach or one o Grand

Views younger teams, Clinton is also a player

agent, assistant treasurer or the league and a

    consistent volunteer whenever hes needed.

As a player agent, Clinton helps arrange

teams by meeting with coaches or the leagues

drats, ormulating tryouts and managing the

entire league. He also helps put the all-star

    team together.

Clinton has been around the program or

a while and has seen the league grow and

    mprove.

Its really gratiying because you can see,

rom the late 80s all the way through this

year, all the changes and all the things that

    you helped build and made

    the little league a better

place, as ar as the playing

    grounds, to the equipment,

to just helping out in theconcession stand to raise

    money, says Clinton.

    Even though Grandviews

    upper levels compete on a

    regional, and sometimes

    national stage, Clinton says

he likes to see the smiles

on the aces o kids who

    arent as athletically gited.

He likes to see how they

    react when they succeed.

    Its keeps you going,

    says Clinton.

    Clinton says little leagues

    such as Grandview oer

    more o a amily atmosphere,

rather than the ultra-competitive leagues that

are starting to grow in number and popularity.

The amily atmosphere oers many benefts,

    says Clinton.

When we have undraisers or when our

teams make it to these regional games all the

parents pitch in, even (the parents o) the kids

who didnt make it on the all-star team, says

Clinton. Everybodys willing to help out, willin

donate, whereas at your AAU tournaments

charge you to play and sometimes you have

pay or each tournament you get in.

Clinton adds that raising money together

brings all the teams in the league closer.

You play hard against each other all yea

youre all one amily at the end o the year, s

    Clinton.

Still, this was a game that the team will

here would be plenty o celebrating later that

night, just as two excited players

doused him in water. Our guys

    are well-aware o the act o what

they just did, said Dehmer, now

be a celebration tonight and were

going to be all excited but we know

weve got business to take care

o Monday and on to hopeully

the end o (the week o the state

    tournament).

    Dehmer also said that the

record does mean a lot or the

team, even i they are ocused on a

    state championship. It means that

    weve done something that nobody

    ever else has

    done, said Dehmer. When

you sit there and thinkabout that, you know, its

    pretty special.

    Those in attendance on

    that hot July night realized

    they were watching

    something special. Parents

    were proud that their kids

    had achieved something

    so amazing and riends

    were excited to share the

    moment with the players.

    Some, such as Mel

Martens, didnt even know the players but

wanted to support the Blue Devils. Martenswas a catcher on the 1941 Martensdale state

    championship baseball team. Martens admitted

that he didnt even know the current players

names. He just wanted to see them play ball. In

one o lies unny coincidences, the location o the

game was perect or Martens, who was able to

see his ormer schools team break the record. I

live in Indianola so they couldnt be any closer (to

The team also wants to recapture the richness

the history o the AIB womens basketball team,

    ays Coach Jerry Kindhart.

I try to impress players with the act that our

oal is to build this program into one that lives up

o its tradition, Kindhart says. Up until the 1950s,

his was one o the most elite basketball programs

the United States, not just Iowa. Were trying to

et this program back to where it was 50 years

go. I want it to be one o the best programs. We

may not be on a national level with the Division I

chools, but we want to be the best we can be in

    he NAIA division were in.

    But its going to take

    There are just some really

    Lets prove these guys wrong,

e tells his players. To meet the ambitious goals

or his third season with the

agles, Kindhart is relying on his

    o-captains, senior orward Caitlin

agarty and junior guard McKinsey Nessa.

Those two are our leaders, Kindhart says. They

ame the same time I did, and they have become

    he oundation o the team.

Nessa is determined to push the Eagles up in the

    onerence rankings.

We are coming into the season with everyone

hinking AIB is no competition, she says. This

could also be an advantage, because our

    opponents will underestimate us.

Most teams AIB plays have a height

advantage, Hagarty says. But we do ourbest to keep them out o the paint, she

    says.

Kindhart is also counting on his juniorpoint guards, India Shivers and Ashley

Larson, to be oor leaders. He likes

Shivers fery team spirit, as well as the

    spark sophomore Megan Howard brings

to the oor when she enters the game.

This season is key or AIBs blossoming

    program.

Well be able to measure ourselves

with the teams in this conerence,

because most o these teams are pretty

good, Kindhart says. Well have a better

indicator as to what we need to do or

recruiting down the road, i we need to get di erent

    caliber players.

    The early assessment is

    mixed. The Eagles started the

    season strong, winning three o

their frst our games, but they

have allen to 5-7 ater the starto conerence play. They logged

three losses in their frst MCC

    games against Iowa Wesleyan,

    a NAIA Division II championship

    qualifer last year, St. Ambrose,

    last years MCC regular-season

    and conerence-tournament

    champions, and Ashord

    University.

    But you never know whats

going to happen late in the year,

    Kindhart says.Kindhart doesnt have the

luxury o ocusing solely on the

    current season. Part o his

    responsibility is strategize or the

uture o his program. Recruiting is a year-round

eort, and the results shape the team or years to

    come.

That new orm is apparent in his line-up o our

reshmen players rom Arizona, Michigan and

Texas. Kindhart receives inquiries rom high school

anthers topped the Raiders, 89-80, in Grand Rapids,Mich. earlier this season.

I just think that Davenports an outstanding team and

s a tough spot or them to be in because theres a little

more pressure on them having won that game, coming

The Red Raiders aced some extra adversity in the

Senior guard Becca Hurley knew the team would be

We are a very deep team, Hurley said. Weve relied

n each other all year. No matter whos on the court, you

ust play with whos out there. We trust each other all

he way down to the last person.

Northwestern got an all-around eort rom the team,

elping fll De Jongs and Babcocks shoes.

Senior Allison Hulst and reshman Samantha

leinsasser flled in or the injured starters. Kleinsasser

layed a valuable 19 minutes or the Red Raiders, while

ulst contributed 17 points or Northwestern.

Frehsman Mackenzie Small came o the bench or

he Raiders and scored 10 points in her 27 minutes o

Kami Kuhlman scored 21 points or the Raiders.

It was a total team eort today, just rebounding,

    eending and fghting, Hurley said.

Hurley defnitely didnt show any worry on the court.

    The veteran recorded a double-double with game-highs o

32 points and 14 rebounds. She also had seven assists.

Hurley came up big rom both the ree throw line and

the 3-point line. She was 9-o-10 shooting the reebies

and sank fve o her 11 three-point attempts.

Small ended a 13-4 Davenport run with a pair o ree

throws to bring the score to 69-63. Thats when Hurleycame through with back-to-back three-point shots that

tied the game at 69 with 8:15 to play. It was the Raiders

frst lead since earlier in the hal.

Were never going to think that the games over until

the buzzer sounds, so we just kept fghting back, Hurley

    said.

The Raiders fnally took the lead with two ree throws

rom Hurley at the 3:59 mark, 77-75.

Davenport was not done, though. Kallie Benike

answered with a three-pointer o her own to put the

Panthers back up, 78-77, with 3:08 to go. Benike led the

Panthers with 22 points and nine rebounds.

The Panthers also recieved 16 points rom Kristi

Boehm, 14 points o the bench rom Abby Ne and 11

    pooints rom Riana Hensley.

    Ater some more back-and-orth action,

    Northwestern reshman Alli Dunkelberger scrambled

or control o the ball with a Davenport deender and

orced a jump ball with 1:39 to play. Davenport was still

    up, 80-79.

Small then came through or Northwestern with a

basket that gave the Raiders an 81-80 lead with 1:18

    to play.

Hurley made 7-o-8 ree throws rom that point on to

    assure a Raider victory.

She took home the tournaments Most Valuable

Player award and was also named the NAIA Player o

    the Year.

Both teams shot the ball well. Northwestern held a

slight advantage, shooting 44.4 percent to Davenports

    41.4 percent.

The Raiders also out-rebounded the Panthers, 4

Northwestern out-scored Davenport, 12-2, in seco

The championship game drew an attendance o

We just had incredible an support, Woudstra

There was a time when our ans just really got beh

Its just a tribute to the great kids that have bee

Woudstra is not only proud o how the Raiders

by Pioneer junior Grifn Lentsch in Grinnells 145-97

oints in a game, the NCAAs third best regardless division, eclipsing the old record o 77, set by Je

Some o the numbers that jump out include 15

    Since that time, the Pioneers

at least in terms o percentage rom

the feld, but we certainly didnt need

those points to win, says Arsenault.

nice that he was able to put on such

    spectacular shooting display.

Arsenault said the Forest City,Minnesota native wasnt taking time

on deense. I was impressed with ho

hard he did play, he was getting ater

it, he was getting to traps, getting ba

    across hal court deensively, getting

    some deections.

Lentsch has his eet back on the

    ground ater his individual scoring

eort. Its still sinking in, said Lentsc

I cant believe that I would score that

many, its been crazy, especially the w

ater. Hes not complaining about no

scoring as much since that contest.

proves were not a one man team. My

teammates are pretty good, too. At

Forest Lake, Lentsch averaged 13 pohis high being 25.

    What brought Lentsch rom just

north o the Twin Cities area to Grinn

College? My high school coach got m

in touch with Coach A.(Dave Arsenault, Sr,), then

I learned more about the system and I just ell in

love with it, and decided to come here or that. T

best part o attending events on the Grinnell Colle

campus, include Pioneer basketball games is that

events are ree o charge to the public. There are

plenty o chances to see Grinnell College games in

2012. You never know what kind o scoring recor

the Pioneers will go ater next.

I kind o got a sense o it beore the game, Ja

    everyone.

Like Rhoads, Jantz couldnt fnd words or how

elt when James White scampered into the endzo

    or the game-winning touchdown.

You cant describe that eeling, Jantz said. It

not only happy or yoursel but just the team and a

the ans there so its really an indescribable eelin

Again, perhaps its only necessary to look to th

Rhoads, Jantz Heroes ater Cyclones Deeat Hawkeyes in Triple Overtimem Weideman Editor Originally Published in Volume 13 Issue 7

With wins against Nebraska and Texas in his frst

wo years o coaching the Iowa State Cyclones, Paul

hoads had become a hero to Cyclone Nation.

Ater the Cyclones deeated archrival Iowa, 44-41,

three overtimes, Paul Rhoads stirred something

ew in Ames.By beating the Hawkeyes, Rhoads and his team

ave a proud an base something to believe in. Most

mportantly, Rhoads gave Cyclone ans what theyve

een waiting or since 2007 a win against Iowa.

Rhoads believed in his team and now Cyclone

    ation does too.

Ater the game, Rhoads wasnt able to put into

ords how it elt to deeat the Hawkeyes.

Words werent necessary or anyone who watched

n excited Paul Rhoads lead the student section and

ns on the feld in a chorus o whoops and hollers

hat were probably heard rom miles away. That and

l the high fves ater the game probably spoke or

    hemselves.

(In) high school, college youve got a student body

nd those students are out there early, camping outy the gates and they stand up the whole game and

upport their ellow classmates, Rhoads said. They

hare in this rivalry. They share in this passion. Its

mportant or our kids to go over there and celebrate

ith them. Its important or me to acknowledge

    em, in my opinion.

Rhoads also said it was hard to fnd the words to

ell his team in the locker room. He said his post-

ame speech probably wasnt going to go viral on

    ouTube anytime soon.

It was probably a downer or the kids, Rhoads

aid. I couldnt go there. Theres too many things that

ere emotionally packed into this game to go there.

I I had tried to do that or them it would have been

a mess, especially when youre looking at 100-some

kids and hal o them are balling because o what they

    just gave up or you.

Emotions were certainly high in the Iowa State

locker room ater the game. Most o the players hadnever beaten Iowa beore. Only those who redshirted

in 2007 would have experienced the last time Iowa

    State deeated the Hawkeyes.

The Cyclones werent supposed to do much in

2011, mostly due to a tremendously tough schedule.

But on an aternoon in Ames, with the entire state

fxated on what was happening at Jack Trice Stadium,

the Cyclones gave their an base reason to believe in

    their team.

    Our ootball team overcame unbelievable

adversity, Rhoads said. You dont turn the ball over

three times twice inside your ten (yard line), miss two

feld goals against a ootball program like Iowa and

win too many times, unless you have the resolve o

the young men that I coach.

Rhoads was especially impressed with the play oJUCO transer quarterback, Steele Jantz.

Steele Jantz makes plays, Rhoads said.

Jantz made plenty o plays against the Hawkeyes.

He completed 25-o-37 passes or 279 yards

and our touchdowns. Many o the passes were

completed ater he scrambled to create time or his

    receivers to get open.

Jantz also had 16 carries or a net total o 42

yards. While that doesnt sound like much, many o

the yards Jantz gained on the ground kept Cyclone

    drives alive.

Though hes only been in Iowa or a short time, the

impact o the win is not lost on Jantz.

Iowa State QB Steele Jantz scrambles toward the

endzone. Jantz gave the Hawkeyes fts on the ground

through the air. Jantz led the Cyclones to a triple over

victory over Iowa. (Photo by Sam Taylor/Impact Image

UNI Gearing Up or a National Championship Runduardo Zamarripa Sta Writer Originally Published in Volume 13 Issue 8

Playing or Northern Iowa Football comes with

aded expectations. Ater 4-1 start and a No. 2

ational FCS ranking, the Panthers are aware that

he target is on their back.

We try to instill in our players that when you

ome and play or Northern Iowa, were going to be a

arget, said UNI Head Coach Mark Farley. We are

oing to get their best shot.

So ar, the Panthers remain unazed. Ater a

    ut-wrenching 19-20 season-opening loss to Division

member Iowa State, UNI has reeled o our

onsecutive wins. Looking sharper each week.

he Panthers earned their frst win o the season on

he road against an athletic Stephen F. Austin squad,

    4-23.

Since then, the Panthers outscored their next

hree opponents by a combined margin o 103-26.

cluding a convincing 23-9 victory over Missouri

alley Conerence rival and No.17 ranked Indiana

    tates.

ter climbing up the No. 2 ranking in the country,

arley talked about the importance o being

oncerned with how they play and not who they are

aying in order to continue their success.

Our opponent will always play at a higher level. Its

ow we play, not who we play, Farley said.

One o the reasons the Panthers have been

uccessul on oense this season has been the play

    senior quarterback Tirrell Rennie.

ennie has proved to be a dual-threat this season,

ading the team in rushing yards (534) and passing

ards (825). Rennie has rushed or fve scores and

hrown or fve touchdowns as well, without throwing

n interception so ar this season.

We really have bought into the system this year,

Rennie said. The O-line has been doing a phenomenal

job blocking. The wide receivers have been doing a

    great job catching.

C Rennie talked about the importance o getting

amiliarized with the playbook and how that has

    helped him succeed.

Im more comortable with the plays. I dont think

about the routes, I know them in my head, Rennie

said. Im just reacting to the deense.

Another important contributor in the Panther

oense has proved to be redshirt reshman David

Johnson. Johnson has rushed or a team-high six

touchdowns and leads all running backs in rushing

    yards (485).

And while the oense has been electric, the

Panther deense has been very impressive as well.

The UNI deense is allowing less than 14 points per

game and has allowed only two touchdowns in the

    last three games.

Our deense is doing a great job, Rennie said. It

makes it easy or us to come out and play the game.

We dont have to orce anything.

Senior linebacker L.J. Fort has been the presence

in the middle or the Panthers, leading the way with

63 total tackles. Redshirt senior deensive lineman

Ben Boothby has provided the consistent pass-rush.

Boothby leads the team in sacks with 6.5

Despite the impressive numbers put up by the

Panthers, Farley still believes there is a lot o room

or improvement or the Panthers. A scary thought

considering how well the Panthers have ared so ar

    this season.

We can improve in a lot o areas. Our deense,

our pass rushers and we can do a better job in our

oensive play, Farley said. We have to be able to be

    aggressive without getting penalties.

    As the season

    progresses, the

    Panthers will

    have to ace the

    pressure o holding

    such a high ranking

    and being expected

    to win each week.

    Taking games

    one at a time will

    be pivotal i the

    Panthers want to

    remain undeeated

    in conerence play.

    The goal is to

    stay involved with

    the team we play

    each Saturday,

    Farley said. Were

    in a good spot right

now. How do we handle being in this spot? Just d

    with issues o each day.

And as they continue to do that, new leaders h

    emerged every week.

Each week is a new leader. Were playing real

well right now, Farley said. Everybody is stepping

to the plate. Everybody is contributing.

As long as that continues and the Panthers

remain ocused, the expectations will keep increa

and a trip to the national championship is the goa

We expect to win our conerence. We expect

make the playos, Rennie said. A realistic goal?

doesnt get more realistic that being in that natio

    championship game.

    And then the unthinkable

Going into the ourth quarter, you could

eel the nervousness o the crowd as the Energy

were outscored 27 to 19 in the third quarter, down

Then the Energy decided to pour it on. They

completely owned the Vipers in the ourth,
