Last year, thenation learned aboutHarrison Barnes and

how proud he made thestate o Iowa with hisperormances at theNCAA Division I levelor Roy Williams NorthCarolina Tar Heels. This season, DougMcDermott surprisedeverybody exceptTony Atzeni, as he willalways tell you he saw this coming with his success under ather GregMcDermott at Creighton.

Mr. Atzeni saw something noteven Dougs own ather did, as Gregclaimed earlier this year that he hadmisevaluated his own son. Wow,what an athlete!

Now that Creighton has wrappedup a spot in the NCAA Tournamentwith its Missouri Valley ConerenceTournament championship, Iowanswill have two young stars to keep

tabs on.Whats even more special is

that Ames High School can claimthese two spectacular athletes astheir own. How special was thatprogram during its two-year reign as

the Class 4A Iowa high school boysstate champions? The talent level on

those two teams was amazing andMcDermott and Barnes have taken

it to the next level.Add the re-emering Iowa State

Cyclones to the mix in Ames andthat town will surely be a rockingplace during March Madness.

Well have to wait or thebrackets to be released but howmuch excitement would a matchupbetween two o these three teamscreate in Iowa? I can only imagine

the buzz that would create. As I type this column I celebrate

the 14th anniversary o thelaunching o our frst publicationThe Local Sports Connection a16 page 2 color tab paper that by

todays standards would not beused to line the bottom o a birdcage. However, on that Saturdaymorning February 8th in the bowelso Veterans Auditorium I proudlyshoved the frst issue into anyoneshands that came to meet KurtWarner, Dan Gable, Chuck Long, and

the 69 Drake Basketball Final Foursquad. It was a proud day or myamily on my son Bens 8th birthdaynow 22 with nightmares o beingorced into child labor alongside mywie and son Michael stopping theautograph seekers long enough

to shove the frst sports-only reepublication (rag) into their hands.

McDermott, Creighton eyeing NCAA Tournament berthduardo Zamarripa ISC Contributor

n the 2009-2010 season, the Ames Little

Cyclones went 27-0 and boasted one o theountrys most coveted recruits in Harrison

Barnes. Amidst all the coverage received by

Barnes (and rightly so, Barness a legitimate NBA prospect),

Doug McDermott never got theredit he deserved as a valuable

    member o that terric high

    chool squad.

Well, lets just sayMcDermott is never going to be

    verlooked again.

Ames games were crowdedwith recruiters all wanting

o see that Barnes kid; the

    id with the silky perimeter

ame who could put the balln the foor and take it to the

    im. Countless times recruits

    gnored the lanky McDermott

McDermott averaged 20.1oints and 7.8 rebounds per

ame his senior year). But even McDermotts own

    ather, Creighton coach Greg

    McDermott, misevaluated hiswn sons talent.

At the time, Greg McDermott was the head

oach at Iowa State and he didnt believe his sonwas strong enough or athletic enough or the

Big 12. So Doug signed a national letter o intent

with the University o Northern Iowa. However, Greg McDermott was oered a

ead coaching position at Creighton and soon

ater, his son declined his letter o intent anddecided to come play at the collegiate level with

    his ather.

The rest is history.McDermott has been

    absolutely terric in his two

years at Creighton. In hisreshman season, McDermott

    broke the all-time Missouri

Valley Conerence scoringrecord or a reshman with 581

    points. He became the rst

reshman to garner All-MVCFirst Team honors since 1954.

    The summer ollowing his

stellar reshman campaign, theNorth Dakota native was invited

    to represent the United States

    in the 2011 FIBA Under-19

World Championships. As healways has, McDermott held his

own, averaging 11.3 points and6.1 rebounds per game on 50.1percent shooting rom the eld.

    McDermott has also gained

approximately 35 pounds sincehis senior year in high school,

making him tougher to guard inside.

Ater a sizzling reshman season and asummer packed o international competition,

it was only natural or McDermott to keep

evolving in his sophomore season, whichexplains why McDermott was named to the pre-

season watch lists or the Wooden Award and

    the Naismith Award.

McDermott lived up to the hype in his

sophomore season, leading Creighton to a

sensational 21-2 start and a no. 13 rankingthe country.

Ater a recent slide, Creighton is now at

23-5 this season and right in the thick o an

NCAA Tournament berth. The Bluejays aresecond in the MVC with a 12-4 conerence

record. But dont put the teams recent struggle

McDermott. McDermott is having one o th

best seasons in MVC history. Hes averagin23.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Fo

someone who touches and shoots the ball

as much as he does, his shooting averages

are astounding. McDermott is shooting 61.percent rom the foor, 48.9 percent rom

    three-point range and 83.3 percent rom t

charity stripe. In act, i it wasnt or the recent slide,

McDermott would still be in contention or

National Player o the Year honors. But thats the way it goes in college

basketball. This is a marathon, not a sprint,

and McDermott and the Bluejays nowprobably need to reach the MVC Conerenc

Championship to secure an at-large bid or

NCAA Tournament. Once youre in, anythinghappen.

And i McDermotts career is any indica

o how the Bluejays might are come March

Madness, teams wont want to have anythido with Creighton. That McDermott kid has

    thing or proving people wrong.

What aided in Grinnells preparing or this years

event were Wallace and others rom the college

traveling to the site o last years indoor track and eld

meet, Capitol College in Ohio. Will was there, (Grinnell

college event coordinator) Tom Sonnichson and I went

rom the athletic department, two members rom the

dining services and catering attended, said Wallace.

Theres a lot o ood being provided. Everything rom

the banquet on Thursday night or 800 people, to

hospitality rooms or coaches, ocials, the committee,

student-athletes going on continuously during the

    event.

Freeman stated that the Grinnell community has

embraced the event rom the start. The chamber

o commerce, local law ocers and re department,

    businesses, hundreds o

volunteers are as ready as t

can be to make this event as

    smooth as possible. Weve

    continual meetings during th

past year, both with people ocampus and in the commun

    prepare or anything that co

    happen, said Freeman.

    The eldhouse portion o

the acility is roughly 74,000 square eet o foor

    space, a six-lane, 200-meter track with an eight-la

straightaway, in its second ull year o use by both

college and the community. Freeman says what s

it apart rom others are the anciliary spaces arou

the eldhouse. Classrooms, lots o locker rooms

have meeting rooms, another room just or coac

    interview rooms or the media.

There should be plenty o Iowa connections as

well. The Wartburg College women qualied ten

events to last years meet, won the womens Divis

III indoor meet two years ago, and could send a go

contingent to this years meet. Freeman eels go

about qualiers rom the host school, and says hi

jumper Ethan Miller looks to deend his high jump

championship. He was quite a story, he was the

to qualiy and won it. Hes also scheduled to com

in the heptathalon. The senior rom Seymour wi

    the Central College contingent.

The last chance to qualiy or this meet will be
