Words from the Prez’s PerchThe temperatures are falling, theleaves are changing and it is time toswitch out your running gear. There is nothing like the cool windin your face to wake you up in themorning or to reenergize you inthe afternoon. It is hard to believethat we are three quarters of theway through 2006 already.

We are gearing up for the fall schedule of races and weneed volunteers. Doug Roselle is in need of manyvolunteers for the Battlefield Marathon on November 11.You can contact him at [email protected] or callhim at 423-629-6232. Each event requires dozens ofvolunteers in order to put on a quality race. If you aren’table to volunteer at the marathon, but would like to getmore involved, email me at [email protected] have plenty of opportunities for you!

The other “thing” that our membership can help with isgetting the word out about the club. I’ve asked many ofmy running or walking buddies or acquaintances why theyaren’t members. More than likely they say “Because I’m nota real runner.” We’re finding that a lot of people have a

misconception that the track club is like the track club inhigh school; that you have be an elite runner to join. Well, just look at me and you’ll find the real truth! Tell yourfriends and running companions about the club and whatwe stand … or run… for. We support anyone, runners andwalkers alike that exercise for their health, their sanity, fortheir friendships and for fun! Get the word out and watchus grow. The more members we have, the more events andsocial activities we can support. The more members wehave the more YOU benefit.

Our fall membership meeting will be on November 7 atPorkers. The Board meeting starts at 5:30 and themembership meeting starts at 6:30. Feel free to join us foreither or both meetings!

We hope to see you on the streets, trails and walkways.Remember that the Board meets on the first Tuesday ofevery month and as always, everyone is welcome to join us.I look forward to seeing all of you.

Raccoon Mountain - Round the Rim RunBy Theresa Samuelian

It was a beautiful morning…. As the sun was making itsappearance on the horizon, 138 runners lined up for the start of theinaugural Raccoon Mountain - Round the Rim Run. At 7:32, theywere off, making their way towards the reservoir. With a shortclimb, runners split to each respective distance. The 10K made itsway around the reservoir taking in the scenic mountains while the5K strolled to the turn around point. With nearly 20 minutes past, the first 5K runners made their way across the finish line. It must besaid that the first and second runners to cross the finish line wereboth Grand Masters (Roger Harris and Bobby Smith)! Life just getsbetter with age. As the clock ticked to past 40 minutes, the first 10Krunner (Michael Mattson) crossed the finish line.

As the runners continue to cross the finish line, groups of runnerswere seen chatting about their run or lounging in the grass. Withplenty of refreshments from Greenlife, Panera, Moon Pie, LookoutMountain Tomato & Banana and Coca Cola, participants waitedpatiently for the last racer to cross the finish.

Raccoon Mountain is a great place to have a race. Far above thehustle of the city, it is quiet and peaceful. Many commented on howbeautiful it was and the tough course. But there were alsocomments about the numerous water stations, great door prizes, and the new pavement, which made for an outstanding runningsurface. Of course, a few didn’t care for that climb to the reservoirso I will speak to management at TVA!!!!

As sailors often say,” N-A-V-Y” stands for “never again volunteeryourself.” As it is, I have run many races in my time and have never

considered the effort that it takes to put on a race. Hours uponhours are spent in organizing the event, making sure that awardsand tee shirts are designed and purchased, as well as, securingsponsorship, donations and door prizes. The activity level beforethe race begins is amazing. Many of these activities take place in theearly dawn of the day. The scene is chaotic. Between setting upregistration tables, food tables, water stations, cooling downbeverages, directing parking and the start/finish area. Organizedchaos is a term that comes to mind.

Volunteers are an invaluable part of any race event. We werefortunate enough to have over 40 people from the RaccoonMountain facility, Jasper Middle School and CTC members whocame out to give their time and effort. Personally, I cannot thankTammy Sitton enough for her outstanding support and guidance.

While our efforts were to have a “perfect race”, reality tends to takeover. I apologize to the runners who were not able to take hometheir handsome award. They have been ordered and you should seethem shortly. In our fast pace world, we have also becomeaccustomed to instant results and race times; unfortunately we werereminded that technology can fail.

All in all, for an inaugural event, I was thrilled with the success of theturn out. Raccoon Mountain is a great venue for a race. Many of youhave already commented on repeating your participation. Perhaps, ifwe tell some more of our friends, we can double our efforts!

In his first Missionary Ridge Road Race , Jeff Taylor became thefourth winner of the 4.7-mile event in four years.

His coach’s wife, Jan Gautier, was the women’s winner for the thirdtime in that span, however, and for the ninth time overall, goingback to 1991.

She has won six times in the last eight years, and at the age of 41she had no real challenge for female supremacy Saturday morning. She was 12th overall in 30 minutes, 6 seconds. Kelly Bullockfinished second among the women in 33:46. “This is my race to getmyself and hopefully my team motivated. Practice starts August 14,”said Gautier, who coaches the Baylor Middle School cross countryteam that won its league title last year.

“I just say, Look, if somebody my age can run this distance andpush myself and win, you can push yourselves.”

“But I was five seconds slower than last year. I hope that’s not apattern.”

She conceded that heat may have been a factor.

“It was very hot, and you could tell people felt it,” Gautier said.“But it wasn’t 96, and the rain last night helped. I was never so gladto see it rain.” Taylor, 21, felt heat mostly from training partnerChad Dean, a fellow Cleveland resident. The University ofTennessee at Chattanooga junior runner from Bradley Central HighSchool won in 25:27, three seconds ahead of the 25-year-old Dean.“It was a good race . I haven’t run that many races this summer, soit was good for me,” said Taylor, who was sick the week before

finishing second to UTC teammate Michael Mentz in the BlueCrossRiverbend Run 5K in June. “I came in here and did what I wantedto. I wanted to win.“Chad and I were pretty much running together and taking turnspulling a surge,” Taylor added. “At the end it was pretty muchwhoever had anything left.”

The 33rd Ridge race was also the first for Dean, runner-up toMentz in the Chattanooga Chase 8k in May.

“Jeff and I both were really looking forward to today,” Dean said.“He’s a good training partner. We don’t get to run together much inthe winter, when he’s in school, but we’ve been running togetherthe past three summers.”

UTC coach Bill Gautier noted that Taylor had a good cross countryseason last fall. “He’s a returning all-conference performer, and he’sput in a good summer,” the Mocs coach said. “It’s a good break forhim to run these races against other people.”

Tim Ensign was third and the masters winner in 25:40, followed by16-year-old Steven Fassino, Chad Varga and Ryan McDermott.

William Hugh Enicks III, 68, came from northern Virginia to run arace with his son and grandsons for the first time. Enicks IV (Hugh)and Enicks V (Will) finished seventh and eighth, while Enicks IIIwas 138th out of the 218 finishers. Andrew Enicks, Will’s 15-year-old brother, was 41st.

Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon 2006(The BEST Ever!)By Doug Roselle

A good friend and I have an on-going joke that no matter what thecircumstances each of our adventures are the best ever. Ourcamping trip that saw a record cold snap was still the best ever. Thefishing trip with a storm that matched those in the movie was thebest ever. The preparations for the 2006 Chickamauga Battlefieldmarathon are in full swing and I am betting that it will be the bestever! This year’s race will be Saturday November 11, 2006. That isVeterans Day which fits perfectly with holding this race in thehistoric National Battlefield.

The big news is that the road construction is complete. Themarathon course will include the traditional two loops of theperimeter on the wonderfully smooth asphalt roads. Yes, the threehills will be in the loop. No, they did not make the hills smaller. There will be a short dog leg out across Alexander Bridge. This willallow us to straighten out the initial part of the course and givesrunners a chance to see where their competition is. Many thanks toDavid Presley for his help on setting up, measuring, and certifyingthe course. The 10 mile run will follow the marathon course to mile5 and return.

We received a lot of positive feedback on last years race. The runnerslove the setting and the enthusiasm of the volunteers. There weresome indications that we could have used a few more sentries andhelpers at the water stops. So – if you helped last year, thanks and Ihope I can call on you again this year. If you didn’t and would like tovolunteer this year, email or call. If you have friends that you wouldlike to get interested in running – this is a great opportunity tointroduce them to running’s biggest challenge. The volunteers reallydo make the difference on how the race comes off.

Other pieces of the planning: I am working with shirt vendors toprovide a race shirt that I hope will be one of those that is everyone’sfavorites. Peggy is scheming on the post race food menu to surpasslast year’s spread. Tim is lining up race sponsorships that is so criticalto the success of the race. Most importantly I hope all of you thatcan, will volunteer and show the Marathon participants that theChattanooga Track Club knows how to put on the best race ever. Getin touch if you can help out or have questions.

First Things First, a local not for profit dedicated to strengtheningfamilies in our community, is encouraging families to get active thisDecember at the second annual Families on the Run.

Families today are constantly on the run and have little time to focuson healthy eating habits and exercise. A survey conducted by ShapeUp America! showed that all of the activities families are involved inoften interfere with their efforts to get more exercise. Research alsoshows that many children are now overweight or obese. Regularexercise, adequate rest and healthy eating can be the difference in afamily that lives, plays, learns and works well together and one thatdoes not.

So lace up your running shoes and plan to be at Families on the Runa competitive 10k and 5k road race, as well as a noncompetitive SantaStroll (Family Fun Run) and Kiddie K Fun Jog on December 2.

The course is set to begin and end at the Hunter Museum ofAmerican Art and will include Chattanooga’s beautiful riverfront.Registration includes hot breakfast from Wally’s!

Participants can enter as individuals, or as a family or couple team!Individual participants and teams can collect contributions fromtheir families and friends to support First Things First’s communityinitiatives. And, top fundraising individuals and teams will qualifyto win incentives!

Families on the Run will have a Holiday Party filled with festivitiesfor the entire family all morning long! Registration/Packet Pick-up,the Kiddie K, breakfast and the Holiday Party will be held at thedowntown Sports Barn. The Holiday Party will be held fromapproximately 7:30 am - 11:30 am. Have friends or family membersrunning, but you want to sit it out? Stay warm with some hotcoffee and enjoy the festivities inside while waiting on your familyto finish the race! It’s almost as much fun as recess. They’re tired, sweaty and ready for abreak and a cool something to drink. But if they had a choice, theywould probably opt to do it every afternoon in the fall and not just onThursdays.

What we’re talking about here is the Elementary School Cross CountryRaces, which are held every Thursday afternoon in September and thefirst one in October. The group includes third, fourth and fifth gradersfrom about a dozen Hamilton County schools and they gather at theRiverpark off of Amnicola Highway for a series of one-mile races.

They are a site to behold. Most are huddled in groups, talking withtheir school mates and trying to stretch to the best of their ability. Theyprobably don’t realize the connection between stretching and running, but they do it anyway because that’s what they’ve been told to do.

The fifth graders toe the starting line first. Many head that way longbefore the starting whistle sounds, perhaps to get their game faces onor maybe to plot a little strategy before the serious business begins. Some do jumping jacks while others do cartwheels, but it’s obviousthey have more energy than they can contain and they’re ready to runwhen the time comes.

We adults don’t think much about running one mile, but for some ofthese young folks, it may as well be a marathon. Most start out at abreak-neck pace without any idea how far a mile really is. Some arewalking before they have reached the quarter-mile mark.

Pacing is another concept they haven’t fully grasped just yet. They runfast as they can for as long as they can and then they walk until they feelbetter and then they run hard again. Times aren’t really important, butthe fact they are out there taking part in a positive experience is really theneat thing about this whole gathering.

Some of the teams have uniforms, complete with singlets and shorts. Others show up in cutoff bluejeans while some even wear long pants. Some sport “real” running shoes while others simply compete intennis shoes. And while some take a long, long time to cover that mile, others are pretty darn fast.

Take Stephen Heinichen for instance. This fourth-grader fromThrasher posted the fastest time of the day on Sept. 14 with a blistering6:06. The fastest third-grade boy was clocked in 6:26 while the winningfifth-grade boy had an outstanding 6:09. The top times for the girlsincluded 7:00, 6:37 and 6:21.

While some 359 runners competed in the second gathering, most arejust your average children who love to socialize, play and occasionally do

a little work.

Christina Grey is a fourth grader from Ganns Middle Valley. She may bethe exception to the rule, but that doesn’t keep her from competing rightwith the rest of the runners. And I’m sure she has just as much fun, butshe pays a higher price to compete than most.

This young lady suffers from Ricketts, which from what her coach DrewWhite explained, is a birth defect that causes extreme bow-leggedness andmakes walking a difficult challenge. Young Christina does more thanwalk. She’ll run for 10 or 12 steps before stopping to walk. A fewminutes later, she’ll run a little bit more. She’s at the back of the backimmediately and she’s all alone for most of the way, but the admirablething is that she doesn’t quit.

And according to coach White, she apparently doesn’t know what thatword means.

”Ricketts is something she’ll have to deal with the rest of her life, whichmakes running a painful exercise. But Christina is probably the mostdetermined little girl I’ve ever met. She’s always there when we practiceand she’s present at every race. She always has a good attitude and I thinkshe would try anything,” White explained.

Schools in addition to Ganns Middle Valley include Big Ridge, Bright,Thrasher, Hickory Valley Christian, Red Bank, Soddy, St. Peter’s, St. Jude,Brainerd Baptist and St. Nicholas among others.

The future of running in Chattanooga is happening at the ChattanoogaRiverpark on Thursday afternoons through Oct. 5 when the final race ofthe season will be contested. No question there will be kids who willcelebrate personal victories because they accepted a challenge for the firsttime and they conquered it. Many will probably go on to outstandingathletic careers. Most will probably be outstanding community leaders.

And they will continue to inspire. You see a young lady like ChristinaGrey and you quickly close your eyes and give thanks for healthy legs. Wethink we have good excuses to quit or to not run to begin with and wesee someone like her and we realize we don’t have any problems.

It’s not too late to get into the action as a support person. Variousmembers of the CTC have been out there helping set up and serving assentries on the course. It’s been a blast and I’m glad that I’ve been partof the action. If you want to see what I’m talking about, the nextopportunity will be at 4 p.m. for the next few weeks.

Hope to see you there. You’ll be glad you did.

Does the drop in temperature put the “big freeze” on your runningregimen? Warm up that workout by introducing cross trainingduring the winter months.

Old Man Winter has a way of slowing us down during the coldermonths. Flowers become dormant, bears take to their caves, andmany running regimens fly south for the winter. However, coldweather should not mean a freeze in your workout. The wintermonths are a great time to introduce cross training to your routine.

Patrick Avon, president of the Sergeant’s Program* and an Ironmantriathlete, says cross training is a must for any endurance athlete.“You use all your muscles to run,” explains Avon. “Andcomprehensive basic conditioning is necessary to be an efficientrunner. Just be sure to alternate your workouts. You should reduceyour running routine to accommodate other activities.”

Whether you opt for the comfort of the indoors or pull on themittens and cap for a brisk outdoor workout, there is a wide range oftraining options to complement and enhance your exercise routine.

If you welcome the colder temperatures, you have a variety ofoutdoor cross training options. Those of you in more temperateclimates can include rowing, swimming and biking among youroutdoor activities. Rowing and swimming are particularly greatalternatives. Both provide an all-over body workout, conditioningthe quads, butt, abs, lower back and upper body. Biking works theleg muscles, particularly the quads, while providing needed relieffrom the pounding on knees and ankles. According tokicksports.com, “While running exercises the muscles in the back ofyour legs, biking does the exact opposite, and can keep your legsfrom getting out of whack.”

For those of us who prefer central heat, bringing you workoutindoors doesn’t have to mean monotonous hours spent on atreadmill. Cross training options are virtually unlimited. Stair climbingis a good substitute for running. Like cross-country skiing, climbingstairs utilizes the same range of motion and muscle groups asrunning. Elliptical trainers provide a great low impact workout, whilestationary bikes and rowing machines allow you to reap the benefitswhile staying warm. Enjoy the company of others by taking part inan aerobics class, work off your aggression through kickboxing, orsee why everyone is raving about pilates. However, you don’t have todrive to the gym to cross-train indoors. Run the stairs in your houseor apartment, jump rope, pop in an aerobics tape or join the millionsof people on the tae-bo bandwagon.

If you do choose to continue running outdoors, take care to do sosafely. If your schedule allows, take advantage of the sunlight andwarmer temperatures and run in the middle of the day. Avonsuggests switching to a trail running shoe for better traction insnowy or slushy conditions. “Or better yet,” advises Avon, “moveyour workout to an outdoor track, especially when the roads arecovered with ice and snow.”

Weather assessment also plays a large role in determining how todress when running in cold temperatures. Bowes recommendslayering to avoid overheating. “Gore-Tex is outstanding when thetemperature gets below 25°,” he maintains. “If the temperature ishigher than 25°, I’ll switch to polypropylene and my regular runningattire.” Added precautions against the elements should include gloves

or mittens, extra socks, a hat that covers your ears, and usingpetroleum jelly on exposed areas such as the nose and cheeks. Avonalso advises runners to wear reflective gear when running in the dark.

Finally, use strength training and stretching to round out yourroutine. “Running requires power,” explains Avon. “It takes powerto get up hills. Power is best achieved through strength training.”Strength training has many benefits. It helps tone muscles, buildmuscle strength while burning fat, maintain bone density, andimprove digestion. It also builds upper body strength and increasesenergy. Avon recommends weight training twice a week, with one daydevoted to the upper body and one day to the lower body. Upperbody exercises should focus on shoulders, biceps and triceps, whilelower body work should target the quads and gluts. Dumbbells, resistance bands, ankle weights, handgrips, a pull-up bar and nautilusmachines are all great options for strength training. However, anyheavy object that can be held in the hand can serve as a weight.

No matter what kind of weights you choose, short, intense periodsof activity are best-10-20 minutes-with many repetitions. “Be sureto strengthen your back as well, but don’t overdo it,” cautionsAvon. “Your back is overworked every day. Once or twice a week isadequate.” Complete your strength training with abdominalcrunches three to four times a week.

Last, but arguably most important, include basic stretching in yourworkout. Do not limit stretching to warming up and cooling downactivities. Now is a great time to explore the benefits of yoga orlearn the ancient art of tai chi. Not only will your muscles achieve awider range of motion, many experts argue that stretching helpsprevent cramps, stiffness and injury. Stretching is particularlyimportant in cold weather.

So this year, when Old Man Winter comes knocking on your door, invite him in for a spin on the stair master or send him packing on apair of skis. Because whether you are a koala bear or polar bear, thewinter months are the best time to explore the benefits of crosstraining.

The older generation dominated a race designed to benefit theyounger generation on Labor Day at Chattanooga State CommunityCollege.

The annual 5K for FCA was contested on a cooler than averageholiday Monday with two veteran masters runners leading the wayfor the 3.1-mile race.

Joe Johnson and Jan Gautier were the overall winners. Johnson’smargin of victory was a whopping one second at 17:02 whileGautier’s time of 18:53 was well ahead of runner-up AlexandraMullin’s time of 20:36.

Hugh Enicks was second behind Johnson while 39-year-old TomSell was third in 17:29. Kevin Croft and Leighton Steadmancompleted the top five with times of 17:42 and 18:01, respectively.

While Gautier and Mullin were leading the way for the ladies, EmilyCooper was third in 21:17, followed by Ashley Manning in 22:47and Hannah Davis with a 22:52.

Johnson is a 45-year-old speedster who owns the Johnson Group,a locally-based advertising and marketing firm. His preference is theshorter races and the FCA event was a great way for him to kick offhis fall racing season.

”It was a great day to run,” he explained of his victoriousperformance.

”I know that I woke up the next day hoping that I would never seemyself making a face so ugly,” he continued, referring to theexpression on his face in the Times-Free Press photo. “I wanted tohave a good run to start the season and it turned out okay. We rantogether for about two miles then Hugh and I pulled away a littlebit. I wasn’t sure exactly where he was, but he’s a great runner and alot of fun to run with,” Johnson added.

Enicks is the 47-year-old Junior ROTC instructor at Red Bank HighSchool. He’s also the defending champion for the upcomingChickamauga Battlefield Marathon. His FCA race was just a good

speed workout for him as he planned to add another 12 miles laterin the day. He’s currently logging 90-100 miles per week as he getsready for the marathon on Nov. 11.

”Kevin (Croft) led for the first mile, but Joe and I broke away alittle past the two-mile mark. He threw in a surge about a half-milelater and I was hanging on after that. Joe’s too strong at the 5Kdistance. But this was a nice speed workout for me and I was justglad to be running up front,” Enicks said.

While the FCA win was Johnson’s first in that particularrace, Gautier’s victory has become almost commonplace. She’s wonit at least eight or nine times, but she’s not sure which.

”I was up until midnight with dorm duty, so I wasn’t sure whattoday would bring,” the 41-year-old former Olympic Trialsmarathon participant said shortly after the race ended, referring toher job as teacher and middle-school cross country coach at BaylorSchool.

”Last year I had to run hard to catch Jennifer Croft, but she wasn’tracing today, so I just had to pretend I was being chased. It’s not aseasy as it used to be, but I’ve been trying to do quality workoutslately and I was thrilled to run a little bit better than last year. I’mthinking about doing Huntsville, but I’m not sure yet,” sheconcluded.

A change in TSSAA rules prohibited high school runners fromtaking part in races of the same distance as their cross country races, which this year have been changed from three miles to 5K. Tocompensate for that rule change, there was a separate race for thehigh school cross country runners that was 3.25 miles.

Sam Taylor was the overall winner of that race in 17:52 while MattConiglio was second in 18:11. Jessica Duble was the female winnerin 21:29 with Hannah Jenkins in second with a 23:19.

A total of 289 runners took part in the 5K event with another 39taking part in the high school race.

The marathon course is finalized, and there is an opportunity toinclude kids this year with a“kiddie marathon”. The kidswould accumulate 25.2 miles fromnow until the race, then run a 1-mile run at the event.

We are still working on finding arace director for the triathlon, andhave spoken with several peoplewho may be interested.

The Raccoon mountain race cametogether nicely, with about 100entrants, Theresa and MitchSamuelian should be congratulatedfor a job well done, and for thegreat door prizes. The next Communicationsmeeting will be held on the 19th.Location TBD.

The board recognized FlashCunningham, a longtime memberof the CTC, and asked him tospeak on some issues that havebeen troubling him. Flash isworried that the races are beingwatered down so that there areno longer good awards, food,t-shirts etc at the events. Hiscomment is that for the cost toenter the event, the participantsshould expect not only to havequality event to run in, but thatthe event itself is fun to attend. He realizes that many of theevents are sponsoring charities, but there should be a balance ofproviding amenities for therunners, and earning money forthe charity. He is worried thatthe numbers of participants willstart to dwindle if they have littlereason to show up except to run.George agreed with Flash, andsaid that we need to hold racedirectors accountable but that itis not going to be easy to do.Donna asked if Flash wasdifferentiating between CTCevents and events supported insome way by the CTC.George mentioned the issue withthe FCA race. Chad is acommitted race director, butneeds help with sponsorship, asdo many of the race directors.

The Joe Johnson race will be onthe same day, and Bill mentionedthat it would be best to move thatrace back to December, when itwas traditionally run.

Jerry McClanahan will beginlooking for a new laptop and willprovide options for the RacesCommittee to choose from at thenext meeting.

obtained all this …but I press on to take hold of that for whichChrist Jesus took hold of me… But one thing I do: Forgetting what isbehind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward thegoal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward inChrist Jesus.”

The author of Hebrews (Paul again?) also writes: Therefore, … let us throw off everything thathinders … and let us run… the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus … so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Favorite Place to Run: Any forest trailFavorite Race/Distance: 10KWhy do you run?: I’ve always been involved with athletics and running is a life-long sport. I enjoy the combination of body & mind.Running alone gives me time to pray and to thank God for the ability to run. Running with a partner is a great way to deepen friendshipsbetween gasps for air.How long have you been running: I restarted running last summer after a 25-year hiatus. A local rails-to-trails running path helped me besuccessful as well as wearing a pair of properly fitted New Balance 767s. The biggest mistake I’ve made in running was using cheap sneakersthat led to sore knees, which resulted in my long absence from a great sport.Who or what prompted you to join the CTC?: I was a member of the Lynchburg, VA Road Runners and enjoyed the camaraderie of theclub members. I wanted to find the same like-minded folk here in TN. My wife and son also run, so we joined the CTC as a family. It is agreat activity that brings us together. How did you hear about the track club?: Website. How long have you been in the Chattanooga area?: We are brand-new to the Chattanooga area, having moved here from Lynchburg,VA in July. We are discovering that this is a great city with friendly people! Bill and I have already run the Missionary Ridge Road Race and I amregistered for the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon in November (my first!).

Jogging My MemoryBy Jan Gautier

With the cool air, running this morningfeels like old times racing through opengolf courses and wooded areas. I havealways loved cross-country. I can seemyself running across a vast field trying tobe the first through the narrow turn oftrees racing other runners over unknownterrain. This morning brought me backto those days. I coach middle schoolcross-country now and envy the chance torace off roads like I used to do. Iremember when Chattanooga used tohost several off-road races. Although Istill get the chance to run cross-country atthe UTC poweraide meet, I miss thetriple off-road adventures that were once offered.

I can remember one cross-country race held in Collegedale. The racewas sponsored by Dick Dillard’s Fast Break store. It brought a largecrowd, as far as off-road racing is considered. He gave great prizes(socks) for entering the race and always drew for pairs of shoes atthe end of the race. Prizes aside, I remember the course, theweather and the die-hard runners. The course started in a large openfield and continued across a creek, through a wooded area, up ahuge hill, around campus and back through the same creek tocomplete the loop. We were to complete the loop twice. The fourmile distance would feel like six before the race was over.

What made this day different was the amount it had rained theweek prior to the race. The first creek was too wide to jump, and formost of us limber runners “ha,” it would be impossible anyway. This obstacle was not the hardest but I did start the race with wetshoes. As I squished through the next mile, the hill felt likerunning stadium stairs. It was not as steep, but the climb woundup like those under the Walking Bridge. I noticed the runnersbacked up here because of the difficult, no-passing climb. Then thefun started as we descended a long hill into the other end of thecreek. I remember watching the other runners’ footing as theycrossed the water. I remember them hitting face-first in the mudand watching others sink knee deep into the sludge. During thesecond loop, in the traffic, the course disappeared under chocolatecovered waters. I cannot remember anyone getting hurt, but I am

sure the college hated everyone using theshowers afterwards. I remember MaryPreisel and I laughing at the mess wemade of ourselves and shoes. Aftereveryone was clean, more or less, theawards and fellowship of experiencestook place. I miss that race. I do not seethe same faces that I once saw.Remembering the mud and cross-country experience brings a few of themback. I appreciate that there still arecross-country/off-road races available inChattanooga. If you want real fun, Idare you to try.
