What is a desert?

Desert are very dry.

Some deserts are hot for only part of the year,whit very cold winters.

And hot deserts can be very cold at night too. In Gobi desert in China and Mongolia can go

down to -30 °C in January and sometimes wecan found snow there.

About three-quarters of the desert in the worldis without any sand. Much of it only has smallrocks.

Over one quarter of the world is desert.



Rocks-wind-water

Across of the desert we can find tallmountains and open ravines.

In the sahara the biggest mountain is EmiKoussi.

The desert wind often moves the sand intohills, called dunes.

But not all water in the desert evaporatesquickly. We can find water in an oasis. The

water often comes up from rivers deepunder the desert. Hot deserts are famous for their mirages



Deserts Life

Nomads . they look for food and water.

Sahara: The tuareg home is a huge tent with avery large bed inside. Tuareg women can takedown their tents and put everithings away veryquickly. (2h)

In the Thar Desert make their houses from sandand dry grass.

In australia we can find homes under the deserts.

People can not live without water.

Finding food can be difficult too.

Cactus of the sonoran desert cansometimes grow across 13 meters but they

are only 10 cm under the sand. In many places in the goby desert, saxaul

are the only trees, that have a lot of water.

Some desert plants live for a long time: the

date palm lives up to 100 years, the saxaulfor 80 or 90 years and the saguaro cactuscan live up to 200 years.



Desert animal

Some animal get it from plants.

Jerboas are very well adapted to life in the desert. Fennec boxes are well adapted to the weather in the

desert.

Scorpions can go for months without water When the sun comes up this animal go down into

their cool holes and under rock

Other animal come out: the lizard can stand on onlytwo legs at a time.

In the afternoon vultures go up in the desert sky. Are 2 types of camels: some have 1 humps

(dromedary camels), and other have 2 humps(Bactrian camels)



Desert People

Bedouins (sahara-persia): The SHEIKH-oldest man-famous family.

Men and women often have different lives.

Men: get money and food –family

Women: work in the house or tent. Every tribe had their part of the desert. They help people across the most difficult parts of the

desert.

Very famous for their food and drink. (tea, bread andmeat).

Give a bed to their visitors too. Only 3 nights. Move to the next place.

They eat the leaves of desert plants or drink camel´s milk
