What is a Robot ?

In a general definition, a robot is an automated machine which can help human to perform a

specific or multi-tasks. In a modern definition, a robot is an electro-mechanical machine which is

guided by a computer or electronic programming to help human perform task(s).

Why Robot is useful ?

Robot is nowadays used, mainly to replace human. Here are some reasons.

- Robot can do repetitive an boring tasks with high precision and fast speed. Thus, save costs.

- Robot can perform dangerous tasks such as handle radioactive materials, remove explosivematerials etc.

- For modern household cleaning work (vacuuming, mopping etc.)

- Special robot can perform work under extreme and difficult environments and conditions, such

as high temperature furnace, low temperature tanks, dirty and narrow spaces etc.

- Robot is used for military and researches purpose.

Some History

The beginning of robots are traceable back to the ancient Greek engineer named Ctesibius. He

was the father of pneumatics in which he used the science of compressed air in his automated

inventions.

The sketch design of humanoid robot (a robot which has limbs alike to human) started with

Leonardo da Vinci in year around 1495. The robot is a warrior, clad in German-Italian medieval

armour.

There were many developments before the first truly modern robot, digitally operated and

programmable was introduced in 1954. It was an industrial robot named Unimate which is used

to lift hot pieces of metal from a die-casting machine and stack them.

Subsequent to Unimate, development of robotics become rapid. Below are some of the advanced

robots since year 1990s until now.
