Maserati Alfieri Rendered in Production Guise

The Maserati Alfieri concept was one of the stars of the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, so we were thrilled when it

showed up in company's five year plan a few months later. That enthusiasm has led our artists to create a

rendering of what the production model could look like when it is introduced in 2016 or 2017.

Considering that several executives have already said the production model will closely resemble the concept, it

comes as little surprise that the rendering is instantly recognizable and only features a few modifications including

restyled headlights, larger mirrors and more traditional door handles.

Maserati hasn't said much about the car lately but it is slated to be offered as a coupe and convertible. The

company's five year plan also revealed the Alfieri will be offered with rear- and all-wheel drive as well as a V6

engine that has outputs of 410 PS (301 kW), 450 PS (331 kW) and 520 PS (382 kW).

Ferrari Lifts the Lid on Drop-Top 488 Spider

Ferrari has followed the recent unveiling of its 488 GTB with a drop-top version of its turbocharged V8 supercar.

The new hard-top is the Italian brand's most powerful mid-engined V8 convertible to date. The 488 Spider is set to

make its official debut at the upcoming Frankfurt motor show in September.

Ferrari is one of the most recent car makers to shun naturally aspirated engines in favor of smaller turbocharged

powertrains. However, Ferrari has eased the minds of sceptics by increasing power. The new 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8

engine - also found in the new 488 GTB coupe - produces 492kW at 8000rpm and maximum torque of 760Nm at

3000rpm, which is 73kW more than the previous 4.5-litre naturally aspirated engine.

The 488 Spider is claimed to be capable of hitting 100km/h in just 3.0 seconds and has a top speed of more than

330km/h. And while Ferrari owners aren't really worried about fuel consumption, the new 488 Spider returns a

claimed 11.4L/100km.

Ferrari has used aluminum extensively in the body work of the new convertible to help reduce weight; however the

extra equipment required for the folding metal hard-top roof makes it 50kg heavier than its coupe sibling at 1525kg.

The hard-top roof is able to be retracted in just 14 seconds and folds back in two overlapping sections.

The drop-top's styling isn't a sleek as its predecessor with large air intakes needed to feed the intercoolers behind

the doors breaking up the flowing lines, but the Ferrari was built with aerodynamic efficiency in mind and every

aspect of the car has been designed to increase downforce and reduce drag.

Pricing and specifications for the 488 Spider have yet to be confirmed, with first deliveries expected to arrive in late

spring 2016. (DOM TRIPOLONE)

Report: Raikkonen to Remain at Ferrari For 2016 F1 Season

Ferrari may issue a surprise at Monza in September by keeping its full team together for 2016.

Amid raging speculation about Kimi Raikkonen's future, the Italian publication Motorionline claims the Finn might

actually be about to get his contract extended. It has been said that Williams has already agreed to a lucrative deal

to release Valtteri Bottas to the Maranello team, but the young Finn is playing that down.

"Obviously there have been some annoying rumors," Bottas said at an event for Williams sponsor Sure this week.

"Those are not true and they are not fair for Williams and not fair for Kimi."Before there are any facts we just need to

wait and see what happens."

The latest report suggests that Ferrari may be planning not only to announce a new deal for Raikkonen at Monza,

but also a contract extension for technical boss James Allison.

It had been rumored that Allison could be made the scapegoat of Ferrari's midseason development slump.

But amid that talk, Sebastian Vettel recorded his second win of the season in Hungary and also performing strongly

in Hungary, until his technical problem, was the under-fire Raikkonen. (GMM)

1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Scaglietti Could Fetch $4 Million at Auction

Another car from ‘The Pinnacle Portfolio’ set to be soon sold by RM Auctions on August 13 is this, a 1967 Ferrari

275 GTB/4 by Scaglietti. The special Italian exotic is pinned to sell for between $3.5 million and $4 million when the

final hammer drops at its auction.

A mere 330 examples of the 275 GTB/4 by Scaglietti were produced and this particular example features matching

numbers throughout. It was initially delivered new in July 1967 in Italy but six years later, was imported to the United

States were it momentarily resided in Michigan. Before long, it moved into the possession of a second American

collector based in Indiana where the car was driven frequently in the warmer months.

After being owned by two further collectors, the car remained under the ownership of Atlanta-based collector Bruce

Vineyard for almost 25 years. In the late 1990s, the car underwent a complete restoration taking five years to

complete. As part of the restoration, the car was painted in Giallo Fly but in 2011, it was returned to its original Blue

Sera exterior with a Pelle Bleu interior. In August of 2011, it was purchased by the current owner.

Stampede Of Rare Ferraris Heads To Monterey Auction Block

On both the track and auction block, Ferraris are known for incredible performance. And over two dozen examples,

spanning much of the storied company's existence, will be up for sale during auction house Mecum’s main event

during this month's Monterey Car Week.

Ferrari's modern era will be represented by cars including a 2013 458 Italia, a 2011 599 GTB Alonso Final Edition,

and a three-pedal 2003 575M.

But with estimates ranging between $270,000 and $500,000, those models, desirable as they may be, represent the

relative low end of the scale. Though there is a 1989 328 GTS—being described as one of the lowest-mile example

in the world—which isn't expected to fetch more than $325,000.

While a 1989 F40 is expected to easily crack the million-dollar mark, most of the seven-figure cars are of a

significantly older vintage, and they represent a decent percentage of the field. Along with perennial favorites like

the 1972 365 GTB/4 Daytona, there will be a 1968 330 GTS originally owned by casino king Bill Harrah, a stunning

1964 275 GTB "Short Nose," and a one-owner 1964 250 GT/L "Lusso."

If history is any guide, all of '60s cars are practically guaranteed to appreciate, as classic Ferrari prices have

skyrocketed of late—and the market has shown no signs of slowing. Check out the gallery above to see pictures of

the cars set to cross the block.

Mecum’s annual Daytime Auction event will be held August 13-15 in Monterey, California. (John Coyle)

Former ‘Top Gear’ Producer Provides Details On Clarkson, Hammond And May’s New

Show

It was only last week that online retail giant Amazon confirmed that former Top Gear hosts Jeremy Clarkson,

Richard Hammond and James May would be starring in a new motoring show on its Amazon Instant Video

streaming service. The deal, estimated to be valued at a staggering $250 million, also included former Top Gear

producer Andy Wilman, who like Hammond and May chose to quit the show after Clarkson was fired.

Wilman is credited as being the brains behind much of the style and humor of Top Gear (this is how dreary the

show might have been without his talents), and we’re glad to hear that he will be helping produce the new show on

Amazon Instant Video.

Now, during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Wilman has provided a few details about the new show set

to debut next year. The Briton explained that there will be “lots of newness” including a new look, some new

elements and a new home. There will still be some familiar elements, he said, like scenes filmed in the studio and

some international segments. There’s still much in the air, however, as the team has been busy knocking out the

deal and only now is starting work on the format.

Wilman explained that a good budget, a love of quality and a high level of autonomy promised by Amazon were

what made the deal so attractive. And he also confirmed that there were talks in place with British broadcaster ITV

but that a contractual clause had barred the crew from creating a motoring series on a rival terrestrial channel for a

minimum two years.

Amazon has so far announced three season of the new show, with each season to feature 12 episodes, with each

one roughly 60 minutes in length. The first season will air in the fall of 2016, and it’s likely the episodes will be

released in a weekly format, just like on television. (Viknesh Vijayenthiran)

Vettel Wins Hungarian GP Thriller, Red Bull Takes 2nd & 3rd!

Sebastian Vettel has won a thrilling Hungarian Grand Prix after leading from start to finish. Red Bull won the two

remaining podiums with Daniil Kvyat winning his first career victory in P2 and Daniel Ricciardo taking P3 even after

a last minute collision with Rosberg. The Mercedes team failed to score any podium wins this weekend even after

starting in the front row – a series of incidents encountered both Hamilton and Rosberg denying them any podium

victory.

McLaren is all in smiles today after finishing within points zone with both cars – Alonso finished in P5 while Button

finished in P9. Young Max Verstappen finished in P4 for Toro Rosso, which is the best finish in his career so far.

This weekend drivers paid their respects to Jules Bianchi by having a message on their cars and helmets. Before

the race kicked off, there was a moment of silence with drivers forming a ring with hands on Jules Bianchi’s helmet.

The family of Jules was in Budapest as well.

All drivers started on soft tires apart from Lotus’ Pastor Maldonado. Lewis Hamilton was vying for his fifth win which

would make him the driver with the most number of wins at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Elsewhere, McLaren missed

out of qualifying due to technical issues and had to start from the near bottom of the field. Noteworthy, the team has

the highest number of F1 wins at 11 in this circuit – their last win was in 2012.

Soon as the lights went out Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel managed to jump both Mercedes to take the lead. Kimi

Raikkonen joined his teammate to take P2 while Nico Rosberg despite having a good start lay in P3. Hamilton went

off at Turn 6 thereby dropping to tenth place on the grid. With five laps into the race, Vettel led the field away from

Raikkonen, Rosberg, Williams Valtteri Bottas, Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg, Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat and Daniel

Ricciardo.

2015 Rolex Motorsports Reunion Preview

This August 13-16, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion will return to Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca. This

event is billed as the largest of the events during Monterey Automobile Week. Being there is a bit like entering a

time machine and walking out into any automotive era of your choice. The cars that were invited to participate will

consist of some really old relics, cars from modern times and everything in between. But they all will be doing the

same thing; they’ll be on the track racing, continuing a tradition that began here in 1974.

Many cars make application to participate but not all receive invitations. About 550 are approved, based upon

authenticity, race provenance and period correctness. The fortunate ones will compete on Mazda Raceway’s 2.2

mile road course. The course includes 11 turns, 300 feet in elevation change and the dramatic Corkscrew, a five-

story, twisting steep descent.

The 550 invited cars are spread among several Race Groups. For 2015 there have been some changes to these

Groups. Below are the groups that are scheduled to appear:

• 1927-1951 Racing

• 1955-1962 GT

• 1963-1966 GT over 2500cc

• 1973-1981 FIA, IMSA, GT, GTX, AAGT, GTU

• 1981-1991 FIA Manufacturers Championship; IMSA GTO/GTP

• 1955-1961 Sports Racing over 2000cc

• 1955-1961 Sports Racing under 2000cc

• FIA Manufacturers Championship

For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] August 7th, 2015

• 1947-1955 Sports Racing and GT

• 1961-1966 GT under 2500cc

• 1968-1976 Formula 5000

• 1967-1984 Formula One

• 1966-1972 Trans-Am

• 1965-1970 Shelby Mustang

Often at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, a person with noted accomplishments in the motorsports world

appears as the guest of honor. Scott Pruett of sports car fame will be that person at this year’s annual Picnic in the

Park. Sir Jackie Stewart, OBE, a three-time Formula 1 World Champion, will also be present as a special guest.

Motorsports historian Murray Smith will be onstage describing highlights of their distinguished careers. Listeners will

have the opportunity to ask questions of these acclaimed drivers.

From the Paddocks, to reach the Park most directly and through the concession and purveyor areas, take the

footbridge between Turn 3 and Turn 4 over the race track. Exiting the footbridge, turn left and pass through Yamaha

Marketplace to the Park.

There is an alternate, longer route to reach the Park from the Paddocks. The reward is to see the car corrals along

the way. Take the footbridge between Turn 3 and Turn 4 over the race track. At the concession area at the bottom

of the bridge, turn right, stroll a bit, and head left into the long parking area. The car corral often starts there in two

rows, skirting the lake and Ducati Island. After a long stroll, turn left and find another car corral with multiple rows of

cars covering a distance equally long. That is a lot of automobiles and most will be really well-prepared and worth

seeing. These two alternate paths from the Paddocks to the Park give a feel for the facilities at Mazda Raceway

Laguna Seca.

Time is well-spent in the car corrals. I have perused some of the most exciting show-prepared cars I have ever

seen, right there. Expect many participating cars — some quite rare. A good number of the corral cars are usually

the make of the featured marque of the Reunion. But many other makes often appear too.

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is one of the ones not to miss. To sum it all up, the Reunion is

simultaneously a race, an automotive history lesson, a show-car concourse, an auto mechanic’s symposium, a car

celeb lineup, a recognition of driver’s accomplishments and automotive anthropology, all rolled into one grand multi-

day event.

Look for my coverage of the event right here on TopSpeed. (Rockich)

Woman Worships Ferrari F40 in California. No, Really, She Does

With so many people buying supercars and abusing them due to a lack of understanding these days, we long to see

people showing proper respect to such machines more than ever.

We've recently come across a photo that let us know our wish has been fulfilled. Yes, this is a woman worshiping a

Ferrari F40 as the true automotive god this Prancing Horse is.

The pic was snapped at the Marconi Automotive Museum and Foundation for Kids, a temple in California that could

teach one a thing or two about automotive history. The F40 is just one of the automotive deities exposed here, with

the Museum serving as a home to memorable vehicles from many ages and parts of the world.

The F40 is actually a four-wheeled god

Then again, the F40 does deserve to be worshiped. This was the last turbo Ferrari built before sticking to natural

aspiration. Maranello's recent return to the twin-turbo religion, which has spawned the California T and the 488

GTB, as well as the 488 GTB Spider, owes a lot to the reputation of the F40.

Sure, Ferrari has switched to forced induction in the face of emission pressure, but the badass image of the F40

has silenced many critics.

Only 1,311 units of the F40 were made between the late 80’s and the mid 90’s, with the vehicle standing as perfect

statement of the Ferrari extravaganza. Sure, this meant it was far from an easy fast drive, but the engagement and

aggression is what has drawn many towards it, whether we're talking about owners or fans who have to resort to

scale models and posters.

The F40 continues to stir the crowds and the latest example of this comes from its one-off F40 LM Barchetta

incarnation. We're talking about what is probably the heaviest F40 custom project to date and a car that's far from

being babied.

The Engineer Hits the Bullseye

Olympic champion Niccolò Campriani: from the shooting range to a desk in Maranello

Maranello, 3 August – Niccolò Campriani is much more than just a regular young engineer as can be seen from the

medals hanging at his work station. Medals he won, in fact, at the Baku European Games just last summer.

Campriani is a sports star or, more specifically, the reigning Olympic champion in the 50m rifle three positions, a title

he’ll defend next year in Rio de Janeiro. “Here in Maranello, I am working on a semi-movable high precision vice

that will be used to test the Italian national shooting team’s rifles. It will help us select the best ammunition on the

market and combine as effectively as possible with our weapons for the Games.”

Ferrari magic. The Florence-born engineer will be involved in the project until December. “This experience has been

incredible for me. I suppose you could say that while it’s every athlete’s ambition to go to the Olympics, it’s every

engineer’s dream to get to Ferrari. This is the Olympics of engines. A fantastic place.” He is a little torn on the

subject of his favourite car though: “Until last week, I had no doubt it was the 488 GTB but since the Spider

appeared, I can’t make up my mind. Last week, I saw it in the flesh and it really is fabulous. But if I had to choose a

historic car, I’d have no problem saying the 288 GTO”.

Dream. Niccolò, however, has never actually driven a Ferrari: “I did get very close however. I missed the big

celebrations in Maranello in 2012 for the Olympic champions because I had a specialist university exam in London.

But when my professor on the course heard, he gave me a surprise spin in his F430. I know I was just a passenger

but because it was a right-hand drive, I was on the left. I hope to get behind the wheel of one before the end of the

year, however.”

For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] August 7th, 2015

Shared traits. An Olympic champion and Ferrari have a lot in common, particularly because of Campriani’s

discipline: “The absolutely obsessive pursuit of precision is something both these two worlds share. The challenge

is in getting as close as you can to perfection by gradually whittling away anything superfluous at all. Victories in the

grands prix, on the markets and in the Olympics all spring from that. They are stages on a path of continuous

improvement that has no finish-line.”

Tifoso. Niccolò’s passion for Ferrari and the Scuderia are very much a family affair: “I grew up in the Schumacher

era. The Sunday GP was a tradition in our house and I have many wonderful F1-related family memories.

Nowadays, I do a lot of long-haul travelling but I always like to catch a race when I can. This year in particular

there’s been a lot to enjoy – we haven’t had to live on memories alone. Vettel did us proud in Hungary and I can’t

wait for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza!”

SPEED

Rev Matching & Down Shifting

Rev matching is a technique to prevent shock loads through the transmission when down shifting.

Each gear has an effective operating range of speeds which depend on the rev range of the engine. The faster the engine rotates, the quicker you can go up to the point when you need to change up a gear. Within the operational rotational speeds of the engine, there is a range of optimum efficiency known as the 'power band', and this is where the fastest acceleration can be obtained

Most gearboxes are designed so that when you change up a gear when accelerating, the next gear will be at the start of the engine's power band (see Diagram 2). This design provides maximum acceleration all the way up to the top speed of the car.

For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] August 7th, 2015

In the illustration above the driver could choose second, third or fourth gear. In second gear the engine speed would be at the top of the power band, not leaving room for much useful acceleration until the rev limiter is activated. In forth the revs would be too low, leading to sluggish performance (but perhaps decent fuel economy). In third gear the engine would be at start of the power band providing maximum acceleration this would be the choice of the performance driver.

Changing up / up-shifting

Lower gears provide greater acceleration due to a combination of the gearing and higher engine speeds. Therefore, when accelerating hold on the lower gears for as long as you can, but be careful not to hit the rev limiter (as this slows you down). Only change up when the engine has passed through the upper limits of the power band, not before.

For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] August 7th, 2015

Changing down / down-shifting

When approaching a corner, you need to select a gear which will provide maximum acceleration at the exit, and this gear needs to be engaged before entering the corner. This means braking to the speed where you can safely turn into the bend, then shifting before turning in. Gear choice is especially important here ideally you need to select a gear which will cause the engine speed to increase to a sensible point within the power band so that plenty of power is available when accelerating out of the turn. However if you do select the correct gear and let out the clutch swiftly, three things will happen:

•Significant levels of engine braking will occur

• In extreme cases, the wheels can lock up

• Forward weight transfer will occur

None of these are good when you're trying to maintain control of a car driving at the limits of grip. Rev matching is the solution.

Introduction to rev matching

Rev matching is a technique which should be second nature if you want to be quick on the track.

When is it used?

When changing down to create smooth, fast gear changes in a car with synchromesh*.

* Almost all modern cars have synchromesh; if you don't have it fitted you will need to 'double declutch'

What rev matching does:

•Reduces stress on the driveline

• Prevents forward weight transfers when down shifting

• Reduces engine braking and chances of wheel lock

Note: On the track, use the brakes to slow down and the engine to accelerate. Engine braking is not as efficient, and will not slow you down quickly enough for track use. If you have time to use engine braking, you're not going as quickly as you could.

Rev matching is mostly used to change down in anticipation of a corner. Diagram 4 (below) shows a driver accelerating in third gear, approaching the top of the power band.

As you approach a corner, brake until you have reached a safe speed to turn into the bend engine speed will drop as road speed decreases. In Diagram 5 below the driver is in still in third gear, but is planning to select second. Engine speed has now dropped to the point where a change to second would be possible.

While still on the straight, press the clutch in order to change down. This disengages the engine from the wheels and thus the engine speed starts to drop. The desired gear is second, but Diagram 6 shows that at the current road speed, the engine revs will need to increase in order to mesh smoothly when releasing the clutch.

Select a gear which will provide decent acceleration at the exit of the corner, in Diagram 7 the driver has selected second gear. Simultaneously use the throttle to increase the engine speed in order to match the revs in second gear to the road speed.

Release the clutch smoothly and progressively, then start to accelerate out of the corner. If done well, there should be no jolt as the clutch is released.

You don't need to be 100% accurate when raising the engine revs you'll improve dramatically with practice.

GADGETS

Lego Adds Ferrari F40 To Its Creator Series

The Ferrari F40 is truly an iconic supercar that represents all of the best elements of that class of car. It's been

honored by many, but now the car is finally getting the recognition it deserves... thanks to Lego! The bite-sized

brick-building company has created a scaled-down Ferrari F40 that will appeal to both Lego fans and fans of the

famous supercar alike.

You're going to have to put on your patient thinking cap when you sit down to build this one. There are 1,158 pieces

and that includes a few new ones created just for this kit. More amazing then the number of pieces, however, is just

how detailed this Lego Ferrari actually is. The rear bodywork opens up to reveal the twin-turbocharged V-8 engine,

which is a separate unit all on its own that can be plucked from the car. Both of the doors open, and the interior is

revealed complete with gauge work and a prancing horse logo on the steering wheel.

It's one heck of a mini machine, but it's not surprising that it's so good either considering that the Lego team is more

than capable of crafting serious works of brick art. Lego designer Mike walks you through the development of the

car, which occurred with help from Ferrari, in the video above. Such a car, just like the real one, doesn't come

cheaply. The kit retails for about $90 in the United States. Still, this is so much more than a toy, and it's priced as

such.
