SPRINT CAR SALVATION

By Dave Argabright

A distinctive new book based on 1970s USAC sprint car racing has been released by longtime author Dave Argabright, offering a glimpse of the glory days of the famed “Thunder and Lightning” era.

“Sprint Car Salvation” is based on the “Best of Times” fictional serial that debuted in Sprint Car & Midg-et Magazine in 2005. Although the entire series to date encompasses far too much material for one book, “Sprint Car Salvation” is based on the inaugural season for protagonist Jimmy Wilson and his eclectic cast of supporting characters.

“This book is very different than any of my previous projects,” said Argabright. “When we began the series in the magazine we stumbled onto a surprising number of readers who enjoy fiction, and over the years have received a great deal of posi-tive feedback. That was my motivation for adapting the origins of the series into a book.”

Over the past 12 years Argabright has collaborated on book projects with many well-known racing personalities, including Brad Doty, Jack Hewitt, Earl Baltes, Chris Economaki, Doug Wolfgang, and “Speedy” Bill Smith.

This project quickly became a learning experience, because it involved not just fictional content but significant adaptation.

“Initially I figured it would be a matter of cut-and-paste from the original magazine series, but in less than five minutes that plan went out the window,” Argabright explained. “A book is a self-contained capsule with a beginning and a definitive end, and you have much more freedom with character and plot develop-ment.

“I’ve always enjoyed collaboration with people, and going solo on this project made things a little more challenging. But at the same time this was an enjoyable experience because it forced me outside my normal range.”

The 240-page hardbound book is published by American Scene Press and retails for $24.95. More information about the book can be found at www.americanscenepress.com.

Several of Argabright’s past books have earned a number of awards including “Book of the Year” honors from the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Assn. (AARWBA).

A Life Worth Dreaming About

By Nick Dettimann

AARWBA member Nicholas Dettmann (West Bend Daily News in Wisconsin) has written his first book. "I'm very excited for this project," Dettmann said. "I've wanted to write a book for as long as I've wanted to be a journalist. It was a long project, one that took longer than I originally anticipated to complete, but it was such a re-lief to finally get it completed."

The book will be available in three formats: paperback, hard cover and ebook. You can pick up a copy of the book through major booksellers' websites (such as Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com), bookstores and through his publisher, Author House, and its website.

Here is a synopsis of the book:Carl Robertson, a 32-year-old man, did every-thing he could to move out of his small Midwest-ern town, losing many friends along the way. He dreamt of living the ele-gant lifestyle of New York City. He used his anger and hatred to move out of his hometown, discredit it and never wanted to think about it again.

For a while, it worked. Then, he finds his life on

the ropes and doesn't know why or how to change it. That is until he meets a man who will change his life for-ever and in a way he never could've seen coming. Sud-denly, he finds himself trying to catch up to a new reality, just in time to save his life and find his true love.

Dettmann will be at the AARWBA Indianapolis 500 breakfast in May, so bring a copy of the book for him to sign. Or he can bring copies as well, just let him know by two weeks ahead of time to do so.

Member Discount: Place an order for a book(s) through my website and I'll bring the copies down to Indianapolis and they can hand me the money there. I'll bring them at a discounted rate. Paperback: $10 Hardcover: $20

For those not at the breakfast, they can just order through my website and I'll ship it to them. I'm working on setting up some kind of PayPal account to be able to do that.

But if people buy through the publisher's website, I get a higher royalty in return, about $3/per book more.
