OOnce Hans Schoof casted his gaze on the mostbeautiful pair of eyes he has ever seen at a chance encounter duringhis stopover in Manila, where he simply intended to iron out hisdocumentations at the Embassy, somehow he knew that the sweetserendipity of the zephyr winds has carried him to the pinnacle ofhis epic quest of romance and adventure in his circumnavigation ofthe world.

As Eros was irrepressibly drawn to Psyche theAs Eros was irrepressibly drawn to Psyche, theGerman-born Hans at the prime of his youth was captivated withthe allure and charms of Lani Jubac and her native town of Bohol. In this chapter of his exploration of the globe, the east meets westfascination became a marriage in paradise. Hans and his spouseLani raised their children Katrina Christel Marie and FrederickChristian in an atmosphere of affection. A devoted family , Hansshard his passion for travelling to his hometown in Weisbaden,Germany, across Europe, Australia and New Zealand. As atestament of Han’s love for his spouse and children, he has adoptedthe Philippines as his own homeland, flies to and from their plushresidences in Manila and Baclayon, Bohol, had operated Heidelbergrestaurant specializing in German cuisine, one of the most populardining places in Malate in its time and recently built the world-classPeacock Luxury Resort & Spa in Baclayon, Bohol.

Hans is considered as honorary Filipino by thelocals of Bohol for his numerous contributions to the community.yHe has donated computers to public elementary schools, contributed medicine to health centers, organized medicalmissions to those in need, set up microcredit to spurentrepreneurship among the less privileged and indigenous groups, promoted eco-tourism such as bird watching on the northern part ofthe island and conservation of the mangroves and acted as the city/sinternational representative for initiatives to curb global warmingand climate change. In one of the balmy afternoons overlooking thephosphorescent and turquoise sea of Bohol, one can get immersedand refreshed in Han’s oceans of erudite musings on philosophy, history and countless tales of his voyage across continents thatpresaged his blissful heaven on earth zip code. Over the bold andrich flavors of his favorite Portuguese Port wine sourced from thedocks of Madera island nearby the winery of the Duro valley and inbetween puffs of the aromatic tobacco imported from DominicanRepublic, Hans garbed in a dapper Rajo Laurel bowtie accentinghis collared white polo shirt and slightly rolled up sleeves expoundson his universal independent and freethinking accomplishments andvisions.

He recounts that as a young man he wasinfluenced by his parents in the era of post WWII’s restorationinfluenced by his parents in the era of post-WWII s restorationad renewal to embrace peace and tolerance for multi-ethnicdiversity. His late father was well-loved in their town and Hanshas taken to heart the wise words of wisdom that in this lifeone should live and let live by providing others a means oflivelihood. Hans’ colorful journey from his hometown andhalfway across the planet was originally inspired by NobelPeace Prize Winning author Ernest Hemingway in hisexploration of cultures and civilizations. An avid collector,Hans has a photo of the Cuban fisherman Gregorio Fuentes onthe walls of his smoking room, the man was one of the basis ofHemingway’s main protagonist in his highly-acclaimed novelThe Old Man and the Sea. In the exciting conquests of hisyouth, Hans travelled with a German doctor, a Dutch sculptorand other freethinkers. Taking odd jobs, hitchhiking, hoppingon bus, trains and boats, he was able to discover for himself thecaves of the Minoan civilizations in Crete, watch the sunsetoverlooking the Acropolis, sleep with only provisions ofg p , p y pblanket at the Parthenon when it was not yet cordoned off fromtourists, run with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, traverse andbreak bread with the locals in the Middle East particularlyTurkey; Iran; Khabul, Afganistan; Israel; Pakistan; Bombay,Delhi, Calcutta, India and as well as in Southeast Asian citiesof Singapore; Bangkok, Thailand and Manila, Philippines.

Focused and courageous, Frederick “Chris” Christian Schoof, in his 20s, wades into the sea of challenges for being the nextgeneration executive to run the family-owned Peacock Garden Luxury Resort. Although he was initially bent on pursuing further studies inMelbourne after college, he decided to move back to Bohol to oversee the concerns on his father’s health and reinvigorate the luxury resort’soperations.

Chris soaked up Bohol’s tourism environment and learned the ropes of the trade from his father and mentor Hans. Akin to thenew breed of young and talented businessman who are continuing the feats of their respective fathers, the Trumps in the U.S. real estate. TheBertarellis in European paharmaceutical industry and the Tantocos in Manila’s upscale retail marketing, Chris understands the importance ofleadership succession in business in the persona of his father and values the guidance and supportleadership succession in business in the persona of his father and values the guidance and support.

He considers starting out young as his competitive advantage in running the luxury resort. This echoes the principlehighlighted in the New –York Times best-selling non-fiction book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell wherein case studies of triumphant artists, athletes and businessmen attributed their off the charts victories to the 10,000-hour rule equivalent to 20 hours a week for 10 years practice in aparticular field.

Aside from youthful energy and chutzpah, Chris noted that it takes skills, strategy, cunning and alliances with key businesspartners for the luxury resort to thrive and expand. He is keen on sustaining the momentum his father has started.

Formerly the Head of Operations, and now the General Director of Peacock Garden Luxury Resort, he takes a non-linearapproach to business. He has set the new guidelines to integrate the resort brand identity and enhance operations for greater efficiency. Toforge strong business relations, Chris is a Member of the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Board Member of Philippine ManagementAssociation of the Philippines, Bohol Chapter. He also actively works with the local government to promote eco-tourism in Bohol.
