Our aim is to ensure no undue harm occurs to our people, assets or the environment as a result of our activities.

Our approach to health and safety - leadership and engagement

All Exova Middle East, Asia/Asia Pacific businesses operate to the internationally recognised safety management standard OHSAS 18001. Our health and safety policy outlines our commitment and expectations for managing health and safety. The policy is supported by a comprehensive policy and procedure portfolio addressing issues common to many Exova operating companies, for example accident investigation, and working at height. Additionally each Exova Middle East operating company have their own health and safety committee responsible for hazard identification and developing mitigating risk control systems specific to their operating circumstances.

Health and safety audit and performance bench marking are key elements of our health and safety management. We at Exova subject our health and safety management systems to internal audit scrutiny whereby all Middle East operating companies maintain programmes for internal audit and inspection to monitor the day-to-day implementation of risk control systems. Health and safety performance is reported monthly and benchmarked against comparable operations in Europe and the Americas. Exova Middle East accident frequency and severity rates compared very favourably with international best practices within our industry sector over a number of years.

Unlike many companies, we find that achieving ever better safety performance requires more than a documented health and safety management system. We have therefore adopted a range of safety leadership, training and behavioural initiatives to encourage a positive health and safety culture. These aim to demonstrate real management commitment and leadership to safety which engages all employees. For example Exova expects all staff to have completed formal health and safety training and employs a full-time IOSH qualified trainer to ensure this commitment is realised. By mid-2009 over seven hundred and fifty Middle East staff had successfully completed the ‘Working Safely’ programme and sixty managers the IOSH ‘Managing Safely’.

By adopting this inclusive approach through leadership and engagement, we hope to make safe working practices the norm, and to progressively eliminate the acceptance of unsafe behaviour.

Our approach to the environment - embedded environmental awareness

All Exova Middle East businesses are committed to operating in an environmentally responsible and transparent manner whilst striving continuously to improve their environmental performance. Through our lean management initiative we are embarking on a programme to share best practice across operating companies globally which will reduce energy consumption, improve process efficiency and recover recyclable waste. We acknowledge specific environmental issues will be relevant to individual operating companies however the range and nature of environmental risks are known and minor within the Middle East region. We review our overall progress by monitoring environmental incidents and prosecutions and keep abreast of specific environmental indicators, such as waste, recycling, resource usage, energy and water consumption. As part of our training programme each member of staff undertakes a specific environment module explaining clearly their environmental obligations.

Metallurgical Testing

Exova have been serving industries in theMiddle East Region for the past many yearswith routine and specialist testing services. TheAbu Dhabi facility in the UAE, originally set up in1994 to service metallurgical and organiccoating disciplines, was later expanded toinclude a Civil Engineering testing division in1997. 3. Corrosion TestingCorrosion is a major problem for pipelines andassociated drilling equipment in the MiddleEast. It is probably, by far, the biggestcontributor to failures in the region and isprimarily caused by exposure to aggressiveenvironments containing hydrogen sulphidegas. It is vitally important to accurately assessany material which will be exposed, both forsusceptibility to corrosive pitting attack and,more critically, hydrogen cracking. Equally, thepitting and intergranular corrosion of stainlesssteel is a major cost factor for structures in thearea. Exova have the capability to carry out:

4. Failure AnalysisComponents fail, a fact of life, and though welive in what appears to be a “throw away” age,it is important for manufacturers to establish thereason for failure so that it may be prevented inthe future. Exova have senior, qualifiedengineers capable of conducting failureanalysis on any metallurgical component. Wenot only evaluate situations and suggest thecause of failure, but also endeavor torecommend steps to prevent future re-occurrence.

1. Testing Testing services comprise fire tests andassessments to a large number of European,American and other international standards.

Reaction to fire tests are used to assess thecontribution to fire growth from productssuch as the finishes and contents of a room,the wall, floor and ceiling linings. Differenttests are used to examine: ignition,flammability, rate of heat release andcombustion effluent e.g. smoke and toxicproduct production.

Adam Crowe, BSc (Hons), MSc

Manager – Environmental Services

Relevant ExperienceAdam graduated from the University of Manchester in 1993 with a Bachelors degree in Environmental Biology, and obtained his Masters in Aquatic Resource Management from King’s College London in 1995.

Adam has 13 years experience in the environmental monitoring field with the last 5 years in operations and business management. His areas of expertise include stack emissions testing, air quality monitoring, and site investigation. Within his current role, Adam is responsible for the operations and business management of the department, along with business development and the provision of technical consultancy to clients.

Adam has managed the Environmental Services Department of Exova for over 2 years. In that time he has gained considerable experience in the tendering for, and delivery of, numerous major environmental monitoring projects across the Middle East, working with most of the region’s major consultants, contractors and developers.

Tim Inwood

Operations Advisory Manager – Al Futtaim Exova LLC, Dubai, UAE.

Relevant ExperienceTim has over 23 years in construction material testing and is an experienced UKAS laboratory manager with a sound knowledge of construction material requirements.

Tim originally began his career in the quarrying and asphalt industry before moving to a local govern-ment division of the Welsh Office as a materials engineer. During this period he has supervised and managed several large scale UKAS site laboratories for some of largest projects undertaken by the Welsh Office. In addition to site construction work, he also became involved in highway failure investigations, structural investigations and principle bridge inspections across the region.

In 2006 Tim joined Exova as the site laboratory manager for the prestigious Palm Atlantis Project in Dubai. In his current role as Operations Advisory Manager for the Dubai facility Tim is responsible for ensuring that all departments run as effectively and efficiently as possible with a key focus on offering technical and managerial advice to department managers.

Regional Technical Manager - Exova Group Middle East.

Relevant ExperienceAndrew is a chartered chemist and registered analytical chemist with the Royal Society of Chemistry, being a former member of MCERTS steering committee in the UK.

Andrew has over thirty five years experience in the field of laboratory testing, in environmental and manufacturing laboratories. He has a wealth of analytical experience encompassing all the major analytical techniques with a particular emphasis on organics analysis via chromatography and mass spectroscopy. Andrew has particular expertise in hydrocarbon analysis and profiling of hydrocarbon contaminated land investigations. At the same time has also has an in depth knowledge of inorganic analysis.

Andrew joined Exova in 2008 and provides an extra level of analytical awareness that gives Exova a competitive edge over other laboratories in the area who are unlikely to have such an experienced chemist.

Relevant ExperienceLina is an industrial engineer and graduated from the Jordan University in 1994. She also holds a Master Degree in Quality Management from the University of Wollongong in Dubai since 2004. She is an IRCA Certified QMS 2008 Auditor to ISO 9001:2000 (Certification No.1189242) and a registered lead assessor for Dubai Municipality (DM) to the international standards ISO/IEC 17020 and ISO/IEC 17025.

Lina has over fifteen years experience in the field of accreditation of testing/calibration laboratories, certification and inspection bodies, and conformity assessment practices. Lina joined Dubai Municipality in 2002 in the field of accreditation. Lina played a pioneering role in establishing the Dubai Accreditation Centre and leading it to the international recognition by ILAC and was involved in the assessment and accreditation of over 100 laboratories, inspection and certification bodies in various industry fields both in Jordan and UAE.

In 2009 Lina joined Exova and is currently a Regional Manager - Product Assessment & Certification, responsible for product evaluation and certifications.

Ry Collier, B.E. (Hons.) (Mech.)

Metallurgy Laboratory Manager - Al Futtaim Exova LLC.

Relevant ExperienceRy graduated from the University of Canterbury, NZ, in 2004 with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) Degree with Honours.

He is a current member of NACE International and works to increase awareness of corrosion with regional businesses. His current role in managing the Dubai Metallurgy Laboratory encompasses business development and operations management for the local markets with regard to testing and analysis of metals. Ry has experience in mechanical testing and metallurgical examination of steels and aluminium alloys and commissioned the regions only commercial Scanning Electron Microscope for Exova, a valuable tool in failure investigations. He has also implemented a number of unique analysis methods for routine metallographic examinations such as grain size and ferrite counts.

Ry joined Exova Group Middle East in 2006 as Regional Corrosion Engineer, supporting testing and advisory services throughout the Middle East, especially in the field of H2S sour gas facilities.

Relevant ExperienceAndy has over 20 years of experience in the field of Building and Construction, ranging from structural testing within the nuclear industry to building envelope technology, fire, acoustics and weather-tightness. Having established and operated EWME and the Dubai Civil Defence fire safety centre of excellence, he has particular knowledge of fire testing management and regional Civil Defence fire-safety product management systems.

Andy is a qualified professional specialist in building engineering and is a member of the British Chartered Institute of Building. With long-standing association with the CIOB, Andy is a trained interview panel member for the CIOB Professional Review interview.

He is also a member of the Society of Façade Engineers and a representative of the Dubai SFE Technical Committee.

Alex Wakenshaw TechIOSH, MIHT, MIAT

Overseas appointments include the United Arab Emirates, Philippines, Hong Kong, Ascension Island and Falkland Islands.

In 2005 Alex joined Exova Group Middle East, to help develop and manage their Quality and Health & Safety Management Systems. Alex is currently Manager for Health, Safety and Environment for Middle East and Asia region and is responsible for promoting and developing, safety, health and environmental awareness throughout the group workforce.

Relevant ExperienceManoj Kumar is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India). Manoj is involved in development of various test facilities including design and development of a thermal transmittance (u-value) test facility, in association with the Thermal Science Department of CSIRO (Australia).

Manoj has over 19 years of international experience in the construction, design, consulting and testing of facades and curtain walling systems including design reviews, failure investigation, laboratory pre-construction testing, on-site performance checks and general facade assessments. Manoj previously worked as a project manager for some of the most respected facade contractors in the middle east and managed various facade construction projects in the region and has been involved in various prestigious projects for facade consultancy, testing and conducted over 500 performance tests and quality control /failure assessment inspections in the Middle East.

In 2004 Manoj joined Exova and is currently managing the Facade Testing & Advisory Services Division. The division operates an acoustic test facility, a louvre test facility, a u-value test facility and a large scale performance testing facility which can accommodate over 26 test samples.

Huw Woodyatt B.Sc. (Hons) CQP MCQI, I.Eng FIHIE, MIAT

Regional Director HSEQ - Exova Group Middle East & Asia.

Relevant ExperienceHuw has over thirty years experience in the field of laboratory testing, laboratory quality management systems and international laboratory accreditation. He was previously employed by a number of the most respected United Kingdom testing consultants working on major testing and laboratory quality management consultancy projects worldwide such as the successful three year Professional Materials Testing Services consultancy to the Hong Kong Government charged with improving the quality of testing laboratories in the colony.

In 1998 Huw joined the United Kingdom Accreditation Service as an Assessment Manager and Lead Assessor where he led over four hundred laboratory assessments worldwide on behalf of UKAS and is still retained by UKAS as a Lead and Technical Assessor for overseas assignments.

In 2003 Huw joined Exova Group Middle East to manage their business management systems during a period of acquisition and rapid growth. Huw is currently Director for Middle East and Asia region developing and maintaining international accreditation for a comprehensive scope at all Middle East and Asia facilities which includes engineering, building performance, environmental, food and calibration.


Muhammad Sabir Hussain M.Sc. M. Phil

Regional Senior Microbiologist (Middle East) - Exova Group.

Relevant ExperienceMuhammad Sabir Hussain is a qualified Analytical Chemist and a Microbiologist as well as an ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO 22000 (HACCP) specialist. He is an expert in developing Microbiology testing laboratories, documenting and validating the test methods, estimating the measurement of uncertainties in testing, setting up QC and QA plans in both testing laboratories and in Food production units. He is a trainer for both ISO 22000 and ISO/IEC 17025 and also a qualified UKAS and Norwegian Accreditation assessor for ISO/IEC 17025.

Sabir has over thirteen years of experience in the field of laboratory testing, quality systems, HACCP, and ISO/IEC 17025 implementation. Sabir has written many articles for public awareness related to microbiological safety and is author/co-author in four research publications. As recognition to his professional achievement he was awarded with a prestigious title of ‘OXOID Microbiologist of the Year’ in OXOID International Food and Brewing Awards during 2005 from UK.

Sabir joined Exova as a Regional Senior Microbiologist. Sabir joined this position in 2006 with responsibilities for developing and running the Food and Water Microbiology testing facilities and to provide technical support to Exova strategic partners through out the Middle East region.

Neil Hold B Sc. (Hons)

General Manager – Exova (Qatar) L.L.C.

Relevant ExperienceNeil graduated from Sheffield City Polytechnic, UK in 1990 with an Honours degree in Materials & Microstructural Engineering. Neil’s career with Exova spans almost 16 years in two countries.

Neil hails from a Foundry metallurgy background, having gained considerable experience in the production of both High Chromium and Nickel Chromium “white” irons used for the power generation industries. Working for Firth Rixson Castings Ltd and more latterly Bradken (UK) Ltd, during his 12 year career with the company he worked closely in all technical aspects of casting production from methods engineering and moulding through to melting, casting, heat treatment and final Inspection.

Neil joined Exova in 2008 and is currently General Manager in the Qatar facility, which is the only UKAS Accredited ISO 17025 laboratory in the country. With staff totalling more than 100 covering each discipline, the main laboratory operates out of the Industrial area with additional 9 ‘satellite’ site laboratories operating directly for clients on large construction sites. In October 2009, the company commissioned the first UKAS Accredited Civils site laboratory in Qatar.


Shaun McAtominey

General Manager, Exova, Oman

Relevant ExperienceShaun has over twenty years experience in the field of laboratory testing and quality control. He has previously worked for a number of major testing laboratories and readymix concrete / aggregate producers, including supervision of the laboratory at the new Hong Kong airport, the largest laboratory in the world at that time. Moving to the Middle East in 2000 Shaun has gained a firm understanding of both local and international standards and working practices.

Joining Exova in June 2007 as General Manager Oman, Shaun has focused on business development for all departments. This has given a wide experience of testing a variety of samples such as Metallurgy, Chemistry and Construction materials.

Manohar Nayagar B.Sc.

Relevant ExperienceManohar graduated with a Science degree with Chemistry major from University of Bombay. He has thirty years experience in the field of material testing mainly in leading independent material testing laboratories in KSA, Bahrain and UAE.

Manohar also has hands on experience in physical and chemical testing of civil construction materials and is well experienced in concrete investigation including reporting and interpretation, along with setting up site laboratories and gaining UKAS accreditation.

Liaison Manager – Façade Testing & Advisory Services Division

Relevant ExperiencePaul graduated from the University of Nottingham, England in June 2003 with a honours degree in Chemistry. He has recently undertaken the role of Acoustics Division Manager where he is responsible for the development and construction of the new acoustic testing laboratory in Dubai, the laboratory administration, as well as the laboratory and on-site testing requirements.

He has experience in performing tests that include sound transmission loss, noise criteria and reverberation times. He is an experienced test operator and has gained experience in both laboratory and on-site testing. He has a developed knowledge of façade testing, general façade assessment and construction, whilst being involved in the expansion of the Façade Testing laboratory. In particular, he designed, constructed and operates the louvre testing facility.

Paul joined Al Futtaim Exova LLC in 2006 and is currently the Liaison Manager of Facade Testing & Advisory Services Division. As part of the senior management team within the division, he is responsible for managing the laboratory support systems, which includes primary contact and client liaison, estimation, laboratory administration, health & safety, quality assurance and training, as well as giving support to the testing team.

Paul has 29 years experience in the field of fire testing and fire safety engineering in the UK and Australia. During this period he has observed several thousand fire tests and been heavily involved in the development of test standards. He currently chairs the Standards Australia Committee responsible for Fire Safety and Testing (FP20) and is a member of several other standards committees including the Bushfire Committee and the Fire Standards Coordination Group. He has participated in a broad range of fire safety engineering projects for various governments and major clients including the development of fire risk management guidelines, design of residential buildings, offices, healthcare facilities, entertainment complexes, transport facilities and major infrastructure projects

In 1991 Paul became managing director of Warringtonfire’s Australian operations and established a NATA accredited laboratory in 1992 which is now part of the Exova Group. In his current role he is responsible for all Exova operations in Australia and New Zealand, business development and all fire related services offered by Exova in the Asia Pacific region.

Relevant ExperienceRanjith is graduate engineer and a Member of the Institute of Engineers (India), MIE.

He has over 14 years of experience in the construction field specifically in the installation, fabrication, quality control and testing of cladding and curtain walling systems including drawing reviews, failure assessments, laboratory pre-construction testing, consultancy, on-site performance tests and general facade assess-ments.

Ranjith joined Exova Group Middle East in 2005 and is currently the Operations Manager of Facade Testing & Advisory Services Division with a capability of over 26 test rigs. He has gained experience in both laboratory and on-site testing; carried out testing of more than 200 samples for various projects the Middle East. He has also worked as a third party lead engineer for various prestigious projects in the Middle East where the job involve drawing reviews, technical submittal reviews and factory production and on-site installation monitoring of facade and related system.

Laboratory Manager (site) – Al Futtaim Exova LLC

Relevant ExperienceRay is an Associate Member of the Institute of Civil Engineers and is a UKAS Registered Assessor and is also a registered assessor with Dubai Accreditation Centre.

Ray has over thirty years experience in the field of laboratory testing and drafting Specifications both with respected Testing Consultants and Designers. He is fully conversant with UKAS requirements for the production and implementation of laboratory quality management systems including requirements for accreditation of a wide range of tests. In the 1990s The Scottish Office embarked on a major construction programme to extend the existing M6 motorway through the south of Scotland to Glasgow, at a total cost in excess of £120m. Ray was selected by them to manage all the testing required on this extensive project and to act for them in a liaison capacity with Consultants and Contractors.

In 2006 Ray joined Exova, initially to manage the Laboratory at The Atlantis Project on Palm Jumeirah and is currently the Laboratory Manager for the prestigious Dubai Metro Project, overseeing three site laboratories, all of which achieved UKAS Accreditation for a wide range of tests.


Adrian Pettitt – HNC Civil Engineering

Operation Manager- Civils.

Relevant ExperienceAdrian holds both an ONC & a HNC in Civil Engineering.

Adrian previously worked for Capita Gwent, in the UK, where he gained valuable experience working in site laboratories on two of the largest bypass projects seen in South Wales. During this period he worked with concrete, soils and aggregates on a daily basis whilst maintaining UKAS accreditation.

Adrian joined Exova in 2006 in the Specialist Projects team and helped develop the Non destructive testing regime and is currently the Civils Operation Manager overseeing all Civils projects in Dubai.

Richard Sumners Ir MHKIE (Materials Division)

Relevant ExperienceRichard is a qualified professional materials engineer and is a member of the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers. He has passed Lead assessors course has been nominated as a technical assessor for HKAS for ISO17025 accreditation assessments for civils.

He has 20 years experience in the field of Civils ranging from routine concrete and its related materials for new build work to more complex and advances studies of structural investigations. He has particular knowledge of concrete, cementitious materials, aggregates and NDT of concrete.. Richard core skills include all technical, commercial and administrative aspects of running Operations.

Richard joined Exova in January 2007 and is currently Managing Director of the Dubai facility.

He has also been a certification partner with market leaders in the various manufacturing industries and governments up to Ministerial Level in Germany, UK, Greece, Philippines, Thailand, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, UAE, utilities (RWE, Intergen) and trading organizations in France and Germany.

Ruprecht has a strong international background with success in establishing operating entities in the UK, USA and several Asian countries and territories. He has studied at top universities and research facilities in both Germany and UK and has teaching and research experience.

In 2008 Ruprecht joined Exova Group as Director of Exova Certification and Inspection Services based in United Arab Emirates.

David R. Vickers A.M.I.M.M.M., I.Eng

Relevant ExperienceDavid is an incorporated engineer with the UK Engineering Council and an Associate Member of the Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining. He is a former committee member of the Institute of Materials UK Manchester branch and current member of the NACE UAE section board.

David has over thirty years experience in the field of laboratory testing, laboratory quality management systems and international laboratory accreditation. He has particular knowledge of mechanical testing, corrosion protection systems, sour service corrosion, corrosion resistant alloys (CRA’s) and fracture toughness. Experience in the management and conduct of failure investigations, served as an ‘expert witness’ in court and given independent opinion in cases of technical dispute.

In 1999 David joined Exova to manage their facility in Abu Dhabi, growing with the Middle East group to then become Regional Manager, responsible for the technical aspects of Metallurgy and Coatings.


Paul Wilson MA(Oxon)

Relevant ExperiencePaul graduated in chemistry in 1982. He is a qualified ISO 9000 lead auditor and has a post graduate diploma in management studies.

Paul has over twenty five years experience working in laboratories supporting production facilities. In his most recent assignment he was the manager of a laboratory in a plant producing speciality chemicals, and was responsible for quality control, environmental compliance and process development.

Paul joined Exova in 2008 and provides an in-depth knowledge of a number of analytical techniques which include gas chromatography for hydrocarbon monitoring, atomic absorption spectroscopy for metals analysis in water, organic carbon determination in waters and soils and ion chromatography.

Emma Williams, MChem

Regional Chemist – Exova Group Middle East.

Relevant ExperienceEmma graduated from the University of Leeds, UK in June 2003 with a 1st Class honours degree in Masters of Chemistry.

Emma previously worked for Glass Technology Services, UK where she gained experience of testing materials by gravimetric, wet chemical and instrumental techniques. She was responsible for developing analytical methods, training staff, and documenting and validating test methods to ISO 17025. During this period she also worked as part of a team on a number of research projects which involved planning and carrying out trial scale melts, analysing data and the presentation of results to industry representatives.

Emma joined Exova in 2006 and focuses on the development of analytical methods, documenting and validating test methods, training staff and implementing ISO17025.
