1. PROJECT PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF HOSTEL NO. 09 AT INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY GUWAHATI , ASSAM Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. Theacademic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahatis campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank ofthe river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side, andwith hills and vast open spaces on others, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning. The 74,000 square metre Academic Complex houses the academic departments, centers, their laboratories, classrooms, etc. A spacious Administrative Building accommodates the offices of the Institute. Our philosophy involves listening tothe client, attending to their needs and requirements, rather than creating what we think is best. The goal is to keep the project continually moving and the enthusiasm flowing. Essentially we want the client tobe in control of the project, achieving their goals and requirements. We create designs that maximise the potential of any site, while respecting the environment that it is within. While the notion that structural and aesthetic considerations should be entirely subject to functionality was metwith both popularity and skepticism, it had the effect of introducing the concept of "function. in place ofVitruvius "utility". "Function" came to be seen as encompassing all criteria of the use, perception and enjoymentof a Building, not only practical but also aesthetic, psychological and cultural. A little simplistically i.e. the final shape (or form) of the building would be directly derived from its intended use(or function). Design Consultants - Enarch Consultants 2 3. CONCEPT The design "concept" for Hostel is the central idea that is thedriver for making architectural design decisions related to thisproject. While there are many possible such concepts that couldbe used in the design of hostel enumerated below are a few thatcome to mind. 1. An idea for building form derived from the proposed site. 2. The need to build the hostel in a phased manner could impactthe layout and form, many times in combination of the above-mentioned site constraints or features. 3. An idea about how to lay out the major circulation pathsthrough the building / campus, for ease of way finding andefficiency of movement of students & staff . 4. The functional relationships and area requirements of thevarious departments taken possibly in consideration together withall the above factors. 5. The climate of the location, or the way in which the building willbe lit and ventilated, by artificial or natural means. If there aresevere budget constraints, as in many developing countries, thisfactor could be a major determinant of building form. 6. Rarely, a strong idea of the form of the building as sculpture. 7. Mostly, a combination of all these factors, given varying degreesof importance. Design Consultants - Enarch Consultants 3Pvt. Ltd. , Noida 4. LIGHT & VENTILATION IN BUILDINGThere is no need to define what naturallight is, but we do need to rememberthat this light allows us to define what isaround us, by day and night: thechanging perception of the things or thebodies on which it impacts, and thespace that contains them. Light, orabsence of light, can also transform thisspace in each season, each day of theyear, each hour of the day, eachmoment.Lao-Tse said that architecture is notfour walls and a roof; it is also, andabove all, the air that remains within, the space that these enclose. This relationship between light andarchitecture occurs inevitably;sometimes consciously, other timesunconsciously, and it does not matterwhether we are talking about educatedor popular architecture.Design Consultants - Enarch Consultants4 Pvt. LIGHT & VENTILATION IN BUILDINGThe only thing that we want to call for withthese sensations of our design is the right useof light, be it daylight or nocturnal light, natural or artificial, as a basic and determiningfactor in the configuration of architecturalspace, and hence create more comfortable, more sustainable, more genuine, more human, more beautiful spaces and, therefore, betterspaces. LIGHT & VENTILATION IN BUILDING In our Design we have tried to Avoid partitions in a room oriented perpendicular to the airflow , in order to promote more mixing and improve the effectiveness of the ventilation. Buoyancy ventilation may be temperature-induced (stack ventilation)In our Design we have tried to Planrooms alternately in both horizontal andin vertical manner i.e. In our Design wehave tried to Avoid partitions in a roomoriented perpendicular to the airflow ,in order to promote more mixing andimprove the effectiveness of theventilation.Buoyancy ventilation may betemperature-induced (stack ventilation).
