DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

PLACEMENT BROCHURE

Prof. Gautam BaruaDirectorIIT Guwahati

IIT Guwahati is one of the leading technical institutions of the country. The student strength is just over 4400 in August 2012. Currently there are 310 faculty. About 570 papers were published in journals and about 580 were presented in conferences in 2011-12. The number of PhD students on campus is nearly 1000. There are more than 350 sponsored projects being undertaken at present. There is therefore a strong R&D atmosphere in the Insti-tute. This enhances the teaching process.

IIT Guwahati is committed to excellence in all spheres of its activities. It is conscious that the brand IIT sustains itself mainly due to this commitment to excellence. We always strive to do better. The students graduating from this institute are all very bright. They have entered the institute by proving themselves in their earlier place of learning and by successfully competing with their peers.

Our institute provides them quality education both in the classroom, and outside it. We have extensive facilities for sports and cultural activities. We know we have to mould the bright minds so that they can tackle the challenges of nature, of society, and of the marketplace. Our emphasis is on education, rather than training. So prospective em-ployers may find that a particular student is not up-to-step with some new technology or methodology but also they should assess if the student’s fundamentals are strong or not. If the answer is yes, than he or she will be able to pick up the necessary details without any problems. We are also aware that there is scope for improving the soft skills of students. We are doing what we can. At the same time, we must recognise that since the students are bright, they upgrade these skills very fast while on the job.

I invite all prospective employers of our students to visit IIT Guwahati and to participate in the on-campus place-ment process.

FACULTY IN-CHARGE’S MESSAGEIndian Institute of Technology Guwahati – an Institute of National Importance – came into being in the year 1994 by an Act of Parliament. In the last 17 years the Institute has grown into a full-fledged premier technological Institute. The fourteenth batch of undergraduate and the thirteenth batch of postgraduate students have received their degrees in May 2012. The graduating students – starting from the very initial batch – have shown tremendous potential and skill in their respective fields of study and they have also fared very well in terms of having a well-rounded personality. It isn’t surprising that recruiters from varied fields have responded very enthu-siastically and rated our students very high. Their abilities are well attested by the excellent reports we receive from the re-cruiting companies.

The Institute provides valuable support by offering informa-tion and guidance to the graduating students registered for placement. The Training and Placement Cell looks after all the required activities for this purpose – all the year around. The Training and Placement Cell has the required infrastructure to conduct parallel placement sessions, video conferencing facil-ity, and excellent accommodation arrangement in the guest house, etc. to organize campus placement activities. We are strengthening our existing infrastructure in keeping with the increased number of graduating students every year.

We take this opportunity to invite your esteemed organization to visit our campus for recruitment. It will be a privilege for us to welcome you at IIT Guwahati.

Our campus placement activities for the session 2012-2013 will begin from the first week of December 2012 and the pro-cess will continue till May 2013.

It may be noted that an early date in December may assure you in recruiting the best of the students from our Institute.

You are requested to visit our website - http://www.iitg.ac.in/placement to have a glimpse of our placement policies.

We look forward to hear from you at your earliest convenience.
