Overview• The world is undergoing immense change at an incredible pace.
Climate change, population growth, threats to nature, resourceconcerns, and global development pressure, have all combined tocreate the ‘perfect storm of issues’ impacting on organisations,economic prosperity, communities, health and wellbeing andpresenting numerous challenges to professionals supporting thetransition to sustainability.
• The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and disruptive technologiessuch as Artificial Intelligence have the potential to lead to newbusiness models, products, and services and help sustainabilityprofessionals tackle this perfect storm.
• During this session we will:
• Present the findings of the IEMA Thought Piece on Disruptive Tech &Sustainability and its relevance for professionals;
• Discuss the risks and opportunities for sustainability brought aboutby the 4th Industrial Revolution and give examples of key initiativeshelping to lead the way.

Aim of the document
• Highlight key challenges for business in making the transition to a sustainable digital economy;
• Provides some insight on the impact of disruptive technologies on society, the environment and the global economy;
• General call for action by the wider IEMA membership in this area, suggesting what first steps professionals may take within their respective organisations to begin that transition;
• The first in a planned series…. In 2020, the IEMA Fellows will take a further deep dive on a sub-topic in collaboration with IEMA policy networks, highlighting further case studies of what organisations in a sector are doing to ensure that disruptive technologies support the transition to sustainability.

1. Thinking about your business strategy (key market drivers in your industry and where the main opportunities and risks lie);
2. Developing a clear short term plan for upskilling management and board level professionals with enhanced technology and sustainability skills
3. Creating or participating in forums with other stakeholders and technology providers to learn, discuss and explore new opportunities offered by disruptive technologies and innovators within your industry/sector.
4. Using your sustainability expertise to engage in multi-stakeholder debates with tech companies, finance professionals and your govt representatives to ensure a suitable infrastructure for a sustainable digital economy.

5. Adopting a ‘circular economy approach and whole systems thinking’ when engaging in your organisation with 4IR and new technology;
6. Encouraging/investing in the use of data analytics and more open and collaborative cross sector data exchange models within your sector, and establishing the sustainability value of disruptive technologies.
7. Supporting a ‘cyber security culture’ that extends beyond information exchange when using technology.
