Producer’s Foreword

Our journey has come to its climax, and what a journey it has been. It all started back in May 2013 when we brainstormed on how

we want the next ICN to be. There was a time when we think that it is impossible to do it on March 2014, and I was so wrong.

Joshua hendinata

Producer

This year’s IndonesIan CulTural nIghT celebrates the history of Indonesia with the goal to remind us about the richness and diversity of Indonesian culture. Through the beautiful fusion of music, dance, act, and stage designs, we hope that you can enjoy and appreciate the enchanting beauty of Indonesia.

We have been working hard ever since. My gratitude goes to Pasha, Ivan, and Farhan, my solid companions during good and hard times, and of course Freddy and Jason, who kick-started all the story and music writing which leads up to this day. From the fun and joy of organizing the musical to the hard times of finding sponsors and outing time, I believe all of us have learnt something worthy to be passed on along the process. To all the performers and committees, I personally thank you for your hard work and dedication.

All the sweat and hard work of those who involved would not be complete without the support of Nanyang Technological University, the NTU Students’ Union, Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Singapore, our corporate partners and of course, you, esteemed audience. Being constantly challenged to strive for perfection, we extract only the best to present you this musical.

Now without further ado, experience the stage of ANgkARA: A MUSICAl.

A very good evening to all audiences, I would like to welcome you to ANgkARA: A MUSICAl.

This year, INDONESIAN CUlTURAl NIghT proudly presents to you a story about ken Arok. Written from an old Javanese manuscript, Pararaton, ken Arok was the founder of Singhasari kingdom. Tonight, ANgkARA: A MUSICAl will bring this character back to life and be presented with a modern take in a musical.

Ancient Javanese period will be brought back to the stage through our spectacular sets and costumes. Mixture of Indonesian traditional and modern arts will be performed by our actors, dancers, musicians and choirs to ensure you have the best experience in ANgkARA: A MUSICAl.

In this opportunity, I would like to extend my regards to the people who have strived very hard to make ICN 2014 happen. My deepest gratitude goes to Joshua, Farhan, and Ivan, for pioneering the new concept of ICN history; scriptwriters, for writing such amazing story and lyrics; play directors, for training our casts to perform today; dance director and choreographers, for creating the enchanting dances; music directors, for composing 20 amazing music pieces; set designers, for creating an almost-impossible set within our constraint; wardrobe designers, for designing and creating all costumes and hand-made ancient jewelleries. You guys are all amazing.

For all performers and backstage crews, I would like to give you my gratitude for all your passion and hard-work until now. Today, 7 months after our togetherness as an ICN family, the stage is all yours. It’s time for you to shine.

I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to Technical Team and External Affairs Team, for working very hard to support this musical to happen.

last but not least, to all audiences, thank you for your support and please enjoy ANgkARA: A MUSICAl.

Forewords

This all started way before I joined ICN. It all started back when I was a little kid watching Disney’s Aladdin all the way till when I watched The Phantom of the Opera in awe last year. I have always believed that the musical theatre is a magical place. I believe that the magic lies in the heart of the show - how the show makes you feel.

“ANgkARA” is, among many things, a story about transformation. As the show progresses, I hope that the show not only transforms the characters but also you, the audience. So whoever you are – a little kid humming “A Whole New World” or a true blue “Phan” – I sincerely wish that after the curtains close, you will leave the theatre feeling this magic in your heart.

FReddYscriptwriter

I have always harbored deep interest in Indonesian history and culture. Joining ICN has allowed me to express that lifelong interest on the stage of a musical theatre.

“ANgkARA, A MUSICAl” is not only about the retelling of the tale of ken Arok, whom most Indonesians know as a commoner who became the king of Java through intrigues and murders. It is also about fleshing out the distant mythical names in history textbooks into characters who breathe, think, feel and interact with you, the audience. I wish that, during the show, in addition to experiencing the staggering series of events that once happened in 13th century Java, you would also gain better appreciation of Indonesian culture and history long after the curtain closes.

ANgkARA, A MUSICAl is a fresh interpretation of a well-known tale in Indonesian history and a story about the complexities of human nature. Set in the 13th century Java, this musical will dissect the intricacies and relationships between various personalities, through the display of Indonesian culture.

Angkara centers on the life of Ken arok, a young thug determined to be more than just a feather in the air. Under the tutelage of an ascetic named lohgawe, Arok pursues his dream to become the reformer of his society and his love of a lifetime, Ken dedes, the beautiful wife of his superior, local chieftain Tunggul ametung. his thirst for power involves those around him, including an esteemed keris bladesmith, Mpu gandring, his best friend and fellow guard, Kebo Ijo, and kebo Ijo’s wife, sasmi.

Unfortunately, as Arok rises to become a great leader for his people, he sows the seeds of hatred and vengeance among those closest to him, particularly his crown prince anusapati, who is always in the company of a palace maid, Mahisa dewi, and a former advisor, Ki Pengalasan.

The musical chronicles Arok’s triumphs and regrets in his journey to ultimately discover what is truly important in his life.
