St. Thomas Aquinas Church and Catholic Student Center

At Saint Thomas Aquinas Church and Catholic Student Center, we are Gathered in the Holy Spirit, a diverse and vibrant community, Transformed by Jesus Christ in the Catholic Tradition, and Sent to be the presence of God in Ames, Iowa State University, and the world.

Mission Statement

We strive to gather St. Thomas Aquinas resident and student parishioners, alumni and friends for an annual community fundraising event to transform and send forth parishioners to local, national, and global areas because Together Our Mission is Service.

Goal

TOMS Event culminates the celebration of our faith community here at St. Thomas Aquinas. This signature special event offers opportunities to involve our parish and external community, to financially support parish faith formation educational opportunities and service immersion trip experiences. Some potential examples include:

• National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC)• Service Immersion Trips• Christian Leadership Institute (CLI)• NDVision• Catholic Heart Workcamp

Planning and execution of tonight’s event is 100 percent parishioner driven. Our goal is to raise $20,000 or more to support these initiatives.

Welcome from the TOMS Committee and Pastoral Council

Welcome to the 4th annual TOMS Event, St. Thomas Aquinas Church dinner and auction community event! The 2016 TOMS Event serves as the community event of year and the parish fundraiser for STA parishioners. TOMS Event will financially support all service and immersion trips at STA.

Tonight will consist of friendly socializing and competitive bidding. The TOMS Event committee warmly welcomes you, and your participation in the auction and evening events is encouraged!

Our parish mission statement declares, “We are Gathered, Transformed, and Sent to be the presence of God in Ames, Iowa State University and the world” and the mission statement of TOMS Event reflects a similar message. Further, these statements offer a wonderful opportunity to gather as a community -- and extended parish community of our current Iowa State parents, alumni and friends.

In closing, join us by grabbing a drink and raising the bids. Tonight we gather because Together Our Mission is Service.

Letter from our PastorThank you for participating in our annual TOMS event, our major fundraiser for the year at STA. We gather to enjoy good food and the company of the finest people I know. And we gather also to practice the Christian virtue of generosity.

TOMS helps resident and student parishioners experience the universal Church in opportunities they may not be able to do without our help. From what I see, they come back to us changed, with a deeper passion for the mission of Christ and our Church. These faith-trips are some of the best things we do at STA.

So please enjoy yourselves and be a part of making good things happen.

Proud to be your Padre,Father Jon Seda

8

Letter from the Event ChairOn behalf of the event planning committee, I would like to welcome all of you to the 2016 Together Our Mission is Service (TOMS) Event and offer our appreciation for your attendance.

This being the fourth year under the title TOMS, it is our hope that the acronym will resound with students and resident parishioners alike as the years pass. Therefore, the greater awareness of the event by event attendees, trip participants, and the parish community, the greater success we hope to achieve in the future.

We pursue our goal of sending forth parishioners to transform both their destinations and themselves while building a stronger community.

Again, on behalf of the TOMS planning committee, I extend my sincerest gratitude for your presence here tonight. We greatly appreciate your generosity and we hope that all of you indulge in good food, good company, and great times.

Nick Davis (’16) TOMS Event Chair

About the Honorary ChairsIf someone asks you for a definition of

“stewardship,” just say “Tom and Sharon Fenton.” Tom and Sharon have spent 56 years contributing to St. Thomas and the Ames community.

Many new programs or projects at St. Thomas have found the Fentons involved as Tom and Sharon maintained their commitment to the betterment of STA through active ministry.

A bit of history:Tom was a member of one of the first Parish

Councils; Sharon was chair of the Women’s Guild; both Tom and Sharon were leaders in their “zone” when the parish was divided into geographic areas.

They have served on social justice committees…Charity, Justice, and Peace committee under staff member Tom Cordaro, meals at the Emergency Residence Project, ESL classes, Belonging (a gay-straight alliance), and Connections.

They have participated in the Cursillo Movement, RENEW, CFM, and Just Faith. They taught all-morning Saturday classes (with recess!) for elementary students and evening high school religious education.

Much of their service has been behind the scenes…counting collections, being on the personnel board, interviewing Love Your Neighbor applicants, painting Fr. Supple’s apartment, helping settle a Vietnamese refugee family.

Today both Tom and Sharon are clearly visible in the community through Food at First. Tom, vice-president of the Food at First Board, volunteers 30-40 hours per week…works at the FAF market, is a go-to person at the daily meal and a food gleaner from Hy-Vee, ISU, Chipotle, Sam’s, Aldi’s, and Panera several times a week. Sharon is head cook for a monthly Monday evening meal.

So…time, talent, treasure…Fentons have given all. Those who know and work with them truly have experienced Christ’s presence.

General Rule: If, with respect to any contribution made by an individual or business to TOMS Event, and received goods and/or services in return, your contribution(s) is deductible for federal income tax purposes only to the extent that the contribution(s) exceeds the value of goods or services. Live Auction RulesThe live auction will begin at approximately 8:00 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for viewing live auction items prior to bidding. Checkout will begin shortly after the live auction and closing remarks. If possible, please do not try to checkout early, as your receipts and items may not yet be ready.

Bidding Procedure: In order to enter a bid, participants must hold their bid number on the back of this program high, to attract the attention of the auctioneer and spotters. The number must be visible to the auctioneer.

Use only the number assigned to you, or the number shared by you and a partner. This number is your identification. Participants will receive their bid number/card at the registration desk. This number will be the only way to bid on all items and serve as your identification.

Group bids are allowed. Once your group has purchased an item/package, request a special yellow “Split Card” from a spotter. On this card, you will need to record the names, bid numbers, and respective amounts owed of all parties involved in the split purchase. Once this card is filled out, give it to a spotter or runner so that they can deliver it to the entry station.

Student volunteer clerks, runners, spotters, and auctioneers have been instructed not to authorize or allow any increases in the number of guests listed for an auction item/package. Increasing or adding to the number of people is an imposition on the donors, as well as the clerks, cashiers, spotters and auctioneer.

Questions of priority and procedure shall be decided by the auctioneer, whose decision shall be final. In the event of a dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have the sole and final discretion to determine the successful bidder or re-offer the item in dispute.

15

Payment by the successful bidder must be made following the Live Auction during the Checkout process. All items must be paid in full this evening. Payment will be accepted in the following forms: Cash/Check, Credit/Debit Card, or Online Giving Direct Deposit. Please make checks payable to Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and Student Community. Unless otherwise stated, the successful bidder is responsible to the gratuity and any beverages not included in a dinner package.

All auction items must be removed from the Alumni Center tonight prior to 10 p.m. All sales are final. No exchanges or refunds on items, except where specified. Absolutely no exchanges for cash. Decisions of the auctioneer are final.

To avoid question and confusion, the winning bidder should contact the donor(s) of all auction items that require pick-up, delivery or reservations by Saturday, February 12, 2016, to inform them you are the winner bidder(s) of their item/package and to make arrangements. This is a courtesy that should be extended to all donors. Unless otherwise specified, all dates and times must be mutually agreed upon by the donor and winning bidder. All items/packages must be used/redeemed by January 30, 2017 unless otherwise noted.

Values set forth on items/packages being auctioned are the donor’s estimate and are not warranted by the TOMS Event committee for tax purposes or general value.

Silent Auction Rules

The Silent Auction will be open for bidding at 5:30 pm and will end at 7:50 pm. Checkout will begin after the closing remarks that follow the live auction. Use of bid numbers maintains an anonymous, friendly and true silent bidding experience. Bidders are strongly encouraged to use your unique bid number for the silent auction. To participate, all bidders must receive a bid number/card at the registration desk. This number will be the only way to bid on all items and serve as your identification .

What constitutes a bid? Each new bid number must be written on the bid sheet in the next available blank space. Each increase in bid must equal or exceed the minimum raise stated on the item in order to constitute a valid bid. Silent auction bids must be in multiples of $5.00 unless otherwise indicated. Silent auction bids will be disqualified if a minimum raise is not met. Scratching off bids is not allowed. Once a bid has been properly entered on the bid sheet, this constitutes a valid and binding bid. A TOMS Event committee member will disqualify scratched bids. The bid of the preceding bidder will be honored. The closing bid circled by a TOMS Event committee member constitutes the winning bid.

Monitor the items you are bidding on by frequently visiting the tables where your item/package is located. Unless otherwise stated, the successful bidder is responsible for the gratuity and any beverages not included in a dinner package.

Only a TOMS Event volunteer and/or committee member may nullify a bid. In the event of a conflict, a committee member will act as the final authority and determine the winning bid.

Check-out will follow the conclusion of the Live Auction. All items must be paid in full this evening.

21

All auction items must be removed tonight from the Alumni Center prior to midnight. All sales are final. No exchanges or refunds on items, except where specified. Absolutely no cash exchanges are permitted. Decisions of the auctioneer are final.

To avoid questions and confusion, the winning bidder should contact the donor(s) of all auction items which require pick-up, delivery or reservations by Saturday, Feburary 12, 2016, to inform them you are the winner bidder(s) of their item/package and to make arrangements. This is a courtesy that should be extended to all donors.

Unless otherwise specified, all dates and times must be mutually agreed upon by the donor and winning bidder. All items/packages must be used/redeemed by January 30, 2017 unless otherwise indicated. Values set forth on items/packages being auctioned are the donor’s estimate and are not warranted by the TOMS Event committee for tax purposes or general value.

The TOMS Event committee makes no express or implied warranties on auction items other than those from the manufacturer, which may be with your purchase.

Bidders not making arrangements for payment in full at the cashier table by midnight, will forfeit their right to purchase involved items.

Every effort has been made to assure the accuracy of this auction booklet. However, due to the complexity of the event and the numerous donations, errors may occur. If we have inadvertently omitted an individual, business or have made a mistake, it is a tremendous oversight. Please forgive and inform us of our error.
