Sauvignon Blanc marlborough2013

FORREST

Sauvignon Blanc ProfileThis Sauvignon Blanc was drawn from 4 vineyards located around Renwick in the Wairau River Valley. Whilst all have their own characters, they share in common a Wairau River gravelly, free draining and devigorating soil profile. This classical Marlborough terroir is critical in achieving the smaller berries and lower cropping levels needed to produce premium Sauvignon Blanc grapes. The stony nature of the soil also gives the wine a distinctive mineral, “wet stone” character. For Kiwis it’s a very evocative aroma from childhood; that smell of lying on hot stones after a swim in the river in wet bathers on a hot summer’s day!

Tasting NotesDistinctive nose of fresh herbs, nettles, guava, crushed red currant leaf and just a hint of passionfruit. The palate is full and textured, refreshingly crisp and “taut” with a lingering dry mineral “wet stone” aftertaste. Elegant, sophisticated and cerebral Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, true to it’s Loire roots. It has been created to flourish with time – peak drinkability of 3-5 years.

Pinot Grismarlborough2013FORREST

Pinot Gris ProfileOur Pinot Gris is grown on two distinctly different vineyard sites within the Wairau River Valley – the first of these sites; geologically young soils predominantly made up of recently deposited Wairau river stone, gravel and silt. Pinot Gris from this site has a delicate citrus and apple flavour profile, crisp acidity and fine minerality. The second site, on the Northbank of the Wairau River where the soil is a mixture of river stones and Kaituna clay, gives a much more exotic flavour profile – orange blossom, peach, Asian pear and honeysuckle. The grapes were hand harvested, whole bunch pressed, cold settled and cool fermented prior to blending and finishing for bottling in spring.

Tasting NotesAn attractive nose of royal gala apple, orange blossom and nashi pear, with a hint of ripe stonefruit and honey suckle. On the palate, this beautifully balanced wine is rich, soft and rounded, showing savoury spicy notes with a weighty, oily texture. A hint of natural fruit sweetness leads to a lingering exotic finish; serve chilled, perfect on a hot summer’s day.

AccoladesGold Medal - Embargoed until 15th September 20145 Stars - Raymond Chan“...This is a beautiful, medium-dry Pinot Gris with gently luscious, exotic floral fruit flavours and a fine-textured palate.”

“From one of New Zealand’s finest producers, this is about as good as Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc gets.”

Huon Hooke -Wine of the WeekSydney Morning Herald Nov 08

“John makes high-quality winemaking sound easy. It’s not...He is justifiably proud of his new label which has taken more than 15 years of experimentation, a lot of self-sacrfice and a little bit of luck.”

Pinot NoirMarlborough2011FORREST

Pinot Noir ProfileThe Pinot Noir grape is one of Marlborough’s stars; the cool climate queen of red wine is a natural match for Marlborough’s reliable cool dry vintage climate. The grapes typically show ripe berry fruit flavours – raspberry and strawberry; that distinctive “forest floor” earthen aroma and fresh acidity. Our Pinot Noir grape is a complex amalgam of three different “terroirs”:- classic Wairau river valley stony soils, southern valleys Brancott aged clays and Northbank young stone/ clay mix. Each plot was hand harvested, fermented in 2-3 ton lots with hand plunging, skin contacted post fermentation, gently pressed and then aged in 20/80 blend of new/old French oak barriques for 10 months.

Tasting NotesDeep ruby red colour with berry fruit flavours. On the nose, raspberry, strawberry, red cherry, an earthy “forest floor” leaf note and just a hint of sweet spicy oak. The fresh berryfruit aromas continue through onto the palate, together with a rich underlay of christmas fruit cake and long savoury aftertaste.

Accolades92 Points - Tyson Stelzer “2011 has produced a particularly savoury, honed and structured Forrest, with firm, fine tannins providing good textural profile and promising a long future. An elegant yet expressive and honed style of black cherry and tangy blueberry fruit and notes of ground black pepper.”
