    Editorial

Stemming from our belief that the human factor is a crucial basic element in the success and progress of any company, we always target the develop-ment of our staff members and employees being the key infrastructure and assets of any business.

We strongly belief that the “Human factor comes first,” which is a golden rule Alkhorayef Group established to follow. However, this is not merely a re-dundant slogan that is resounded without any real application of its implica-tions. On the contrary, it is a belief based on a solid well-established method of investing in our human resources. This is an investment that synchronizes with a strategy adopted by our Group as it has long realized that the basic building blocks of any development are humans. Therefore, Alkhorayef Group, through its Human Resources Department, managed to motivate its employ-ees to reach the highest level of productivity efficiently and effectively, and to set off its employees as well as its different companies to realize its overall goals and objectives.

Our choice of the human resources doesn’t solely rely on the amount of expertise and skills a person may possess, but we’d rather take into account one’s ability to develop and improve his personal skills and capability to en-force change if the proper working environment becomes available. Such ap-propriate environment is typically what our HR Department provides for any new employees joining the range of subsidiaries working under the umbrella of the group.

Based on this same principle which is deeply rooted in the beliefs adopted by Alkhorayef entity, taking part in training and qualifying courses was manda-tory for all employees working for our companies. Hence, comes the signifi-cant role of Alkhorayef Academy that designs annual training plans comprising a batch of comprehensive diversified programs that target the development of the proficiency and efficiency of the employees and workers to cope with the strategies and goals developed by the Group.

It is totally incorrect to believe that the horizontal expansion in personnel base may solely help increase productivity rates. Vertical expansion is always a necessary complementary method that would significantly contribute to rais-ing the level of production. This is a role typically played by our Human Re-source Department to ensure the progress of employees through training and qualifying courses. The aim here is to achieve a leap in the level of staff per-formance, enhance productivity rates and reinforce the positive performance of employees on an ongoing basis.

Within Alkhorayef Group there is a consensus among employees on one common goal which is seeking further achievement across all companies. Each one is working collaboratively for the welfare of our corporate entity which is our main priority that prevails over any other concern. Such are our principle instilled by each single member of our family at Alkhorayef Group that takes pride in such attitude that it depends on to reach its future goals.

Our employees and members of staff have proven to reinforce and re-establish such principles day by day. Therefore, Alkhorayef Group takes pride in such attitude and depends on it to reach its future goals.

    Maritime Safety

Maritime safety laws were put to protect human and property from damage and maintaining integrity as a result of many repeated maritime accidents. Safety steps begin with the launch of marine vehicles, as boats or ships are subject to many tests and checks.

For example, when building ships, it's taken into account the existence of multiple barriers within the hull of the boat, for instance, the rooms of the machines are completely isolated from the rooms of the crew, as well as warehouses, etc., so as to ensure that there's no leakage of water between the rooms, which keeps the boat floating in the water when there's a hole in one of its parts.

The boat or ship in equanimity is also checked in all weather conditions, with the need to comply with the recommended load and the need to provide all the tools for safety such as life jacket, safety collar and trunk, first aid and fire extinguishers, the most important of these tools that must be met for large boats and ships are « Life Boat, Life raft» .

A life raft is a floating inflatable rubber lifeboat to rescue members of the ship in danger. The life raft is thrown from the deck into the water first and remains tied with a rope to the ship until the person is on the ship.

The life raft made in a way that if it’s thrown from 18 m its equipments function properly, any higher than 18 metres above the water, requires that the life raft needs to be the kind that passes drop test successfully from this height.

The life raft remains for 30 days afloat in all sea conditions, as it’s able to withstand repeated jumps and can drop quickly 3 knots in calm waters and is loaded with a full cargo of personnel and equipment. The life raft has a blanket or umbrella which takes its place automatically when the life raft is put in the water to protect the people in it.

The life raft has a rescue collar, a non-collapsible knife, adjustable buoyancy bailer for dewatering, a mob, two hooks with sea durable cables reluctant to shocks and a rope to drag the hook; one of them is spare and one installed on an ongoing basis, two draggable oars for floating and 3 slots for cans, a whistle, 4 rocket flares and torches, 6 manual flares, two smoke buoys, electric torch, radar reflector, a mirror for signing during the day, a copy of the safety signals of life, a full set of hunting gear, food , 1.5 liter of fresh water for eachone, a stainless steel drinking bowl, seasickness drugs, instructions on how to survive, instructions on emergency procedures and sufficient thermal aides sufficient for 10% of the number of people on the life raft.

    Interview

Eng. Mohammed Abdulla Alkhorayef is the late founder’s son and a second-generation family member. Upon graduating from the College of Engineering in 1987, Mohammed began his career by joining the international agricultural machinery companies the family represented.Today, Mohammed Alkhorayef heads one of the four strategic business units of Alkhorayef Group. He is also the CEO of Alkhorayef Water & Power Technologies Unit. In an interview with Tharawat magazine, he discusses the development and potential of the Middle Eastern agricultural sector, all efforts needed to prevent any food crises, and the role of regional family businesses in the development of agriculture.

When did Alkhorayef Group begin its activities in the agricultural sector and what was the main motivator behind

taking this strategic decision? Our family’s passion for farming was the main motive behind its involvement in the agricultural business. Nevertheless, the Saudi government’s initiative promoting agriculture and self-sufficiency launched during the 70’s and 80’s and the country’s efforts to diversify its sources of national income were also major factors that assisted the growth and expansion of the family’s business. During that period, our company adopted the concept of comprehensive integrated solutions in agriculture which allowed us to create a

In an Interview with Tharawat Magazine, Eng. Mohammed Abdullah Alkhorayef:

We offer Farmers Integrated solutionsThe Region Enjoys Significant Agricultural Potential that may Form as a true economic Transformation Towards Sustainable

    Growth

With a remarkable history in the business world that dates back to more than half a century ago, Alkhorayef Group became one of the most reputable family companies in Saudi Arabia. In 1957, the group was established by late Sheikh Abdullah Ibrahim Alkhorayef to be run today by the second and third generation of its founder’s family. Nowadays, the group is a leading technology provider for several industries as it offers mechanized irrigation and agricultural machinery solutions, oil artificial lifting systems designed and built within the Kingdom. Moreover, the group is also a provider of operation and maintenance services and it designs and constructs various water projects.

Alkhorayef family’s passion for farming was the main drive instigating our involvement in the agricultural business while the Saudi government’s initiative promoting agriculture forms a key factor in the development of the company.

The Middle East faces some major challenges as the food gap widens year after year

We intend to integrate our global presence in the field of agriculture under the umbrella of a holding company for which an IPO could possibly be issued in the future.

strong bond with our customers. We began our agricultural activities by representing several reputable international producers of water Pumps, irrigation systems and equipment, besides well drilling equipment. Today, our company is one of the top three worldwide producers of mechanized irrigation systems, water pumps and engines.

How do you view the steady development realized by the

agricultural sector in the Middle East? The Middle East faces major challenges as the food gap widens year after year. In addition, we are still dependent on imports. Nevertheless, the undeniable fact is that the region has tremendous agricultural potential which, if properly structured and integrated among Middle Eastern countries, would possibly change into an ultimate economic transformation towards a full realization of sustainable growth. By integration I mean the combination of the natural resources available throughout the region such as energy, capital, and mechanized farming experiences with the vast fertile lands,

manpower and water resources. In light of the steady growth in global

population, what, do you believe, is the role of agriculture in relation to food security and its implications on the

Middle East?Several factors contribute to the lack of food around the world. Such factors include population growth as well as climate change, the steady economic growth India and China managed to realize and also the policies followed pertaining to biological fuels. These factors will influence food security and prices, which might lead to the re-occurrence of the 2006-2008 food crisis. As stated in the 2011 FAO report on international Food Insecurity, the organization clarified that “Investment in agriculture remains critical to sustainable long-term food security”. On this basis, the Middle East can be an important contributor to global food security through merging and integrating its regional natural resources in one unity. What type of services does Alkhorayef

Group render to farmers? We offer integrated farming solutions which means that we take into account our clients’ needs, thus we begin with designing solutions based on a scientific and experienced approach to optimize the farming operations. Such solutions comprise everything from the water delivery systems such as water wells, rivers, lakes, etc., to the most efficient Center Pivot or Dripping irrigation systems, to mechanized farming machinery and equipment. In some cases, we assist in providing financial aid through collaborating with regional financial institutions. These services and products come as part of our endeavor to provide satisfactory after-sale services and in some cases farm management services as well.

When did Alkhorayef Group embark on the internationalization of its

agriculture and irrigation services and how did it progress?

Through its subsidiaries, Alkhorayef Group handled internationalization seriously, carefully and gradually. In 1985, we began the manufacturing of mechanized irrigation systems and pumps as we were licensed by a world-leading manufacturer then. At that time we were only focused on domestic sales. In 1994, we started to expand to neighboring countries. In 2003, we became totally independent as we possessed the expertise and the knowledge to engineer and develop our

own products while innovating others. Today, we conduct business in more than 32 countries. We also established an Engineering and Marketing company in USA and founded a successful joint-venture in China to serve the Chinese local markets. Moreover, we ship our products from three production hubs to various countries worldwide.

What future plans did Alkhorayef family devise for this sector?

We intend to embrace our global presence in the agricultural sector under the umbrella of a holding company for which we may issue an IPO at some point in the future. We planned to work with our customers and business partners to actively participate in realizing regional food security, particularly with King Abdulla Agricultural Investment Initiative.

Do you think family businesses can and should contribute to agricultural

development in the Middle East? There lies ahead some massive opportunities that would bring along rewarding returns and fulfill social responsibilities and obligations. I believe what will drive and stimulate agricultural investment in the region is the private sector, which is dominated by family businesses. However, governments, policy makers, and regional development banks should play their crucial role in integrating the resources available within the region and build the necessary infrastructure and frameworks which would enable the private sector to play its anticipated role and effectively contribute to the development of the sector itslef.
