HS Friday Bulletin 9-30

1 Dear Parents Gee, what a week of school this was! It seems like the day off for “Typhoon Tuesday” was an age ago! On the note of emergency planning, you should have received an SMS blast from school a lerting you of the cancellation of Tuesday’s classes. If you did not, please make sure we have the right contact details in Power School for you. You can make edits of this data yourself. As a backup we also use the High School phone tree. Of course one advantage of social networking sites in this day and age was that the information about school closure also spread rapidly throughout the ISM community. In relation to the Typhoon, the ISM Disaster Relief Fund has been activated and I am able to report that US$ 1000 worth of food and supplies will be packed at 3pm this afternoon and delivered to PCF, one of our service learning partners. They were hit particularly badly and as we did with Typhoon Ondoy, we have been able to respond immediately due to the constant replenishment of the Disaster Relief Fund. A major contributor each year to this fund is the proceeds from Filipiniana, but we also accept cash donations into this fund at the cashier at ISM at anytime. Do you believe tomorrow is October! It is also the day that you can try and schedule more than your initial four Parent Teacher Conferences. Remember you can book these online, through Power School. Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Monday and Tuesday, Oct ober 10 and 11. On Wednesday evening I was alerted to the fact that grade 9 students had been sent an email intended for grade 9 teachers. We would like to formally apologize for this clerical error. We immediately recalled the email and our IT department worked to avoid the document being spread further. The information in the email referred to our record of a teacher “Kidtalk” meeting. Kidtalk meetings are purposeful, directed and targeted discussions about how to improve student learning for each student. It is one way teachers get to share strategies about what works and what does not work with individual students. We meet twice a year for grade 9 and 10 and once for grade 11 and 12. We are aware that the email distribution error has caused a number of issues for the grade 9 students and we have been addressing these issues with individual meetings with students and counselors. I have been absolutely impressed with the quality of the response of the grade 9 students and of their student leadership. It is clear that these students respect each other, love their school and have a very healthy relationship with their counselors. They understand that in this digital age, a mistake like this can happen and they seem to be focusing less on blame and more on what we can do now to make it better. In addition to the counselor meetings and the Grade Level Coordinator working with the grade, I have alerted the HS faculty to be extra vigilant in providing support for any grade 9 students. We will be having a full grade 9 assembly on Wednesday to help to build on the already strong relationship that this particular class exhibits. Please contact either your child’s counselor or myself if you would like any further clarification. Kind Regards, William R.S. Brown HS Principal A weekly bulletin for Parents and Students.
