    1 HP StorageWorks P9000 PerformanceAdvisor

OverviewHP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Software collects, monitors, and displays theperformance of XP and P9000 disk arrays. P9000 Performance Advisor collects performance datafor individual components such as LDEV, CHIP/CHA, ACP/DKA, DKC, and MP blades (applicablefor only P9000 disk arrays). P9000 Performance Advisor is a web-based application that includesthe following resources:

This document addresses the frequently asked questions on HP StorageWorks P9000 PerformanceAdvisor Software (P9000 Performance Advisor). These FAQs are compiled periodically and the

document is available at the following location: www.hp.com/go/PerformanceAdvisor-support-docs.For more information on different manuals provided for P9000 Performance Advisor, seeRelatedinformation.

    NOTE:

In versions prior to v5.0, P9000 Performance Advisor is called XP Performance Advisor.

P9000 Performance Advisor log collection tool

The P9000 Performance Advisor log selection tool is an utility provided with P9000 PerformanceAdvisor. If you encounter issues with P9000 Performance Advisor that might require supportintervention, this utility can be used to collect data required for analysis when you reproduce the issue. The log can be generated at the following different levels:

    Error

    All

    Debug

    Fatal

    Info

    Warn

    Off

The log details can be saved (compressed zip format) and provided to the HP P9000 PerformanceAdvisor Support team for further offline analysis of the issue. Once the log is provided, you can setthe log level as 'Off'.

You can access this utility by entering your server name followed by /pa, and xppaLogChanger.jspin the browser address line.

You can also access this utility over a secure connection, the url is https://[servername].[domain name]/pa/xppaLogChanger.jsp.

If the DNS server cannot locate the management station and open the default P9000 PerformanceAdvisor applet, enterhttp(s)://[IP address]/pa/xppaLogChanger.jsp.

To generate the log, do the following:

    1. Select the log level.

    2. Select the required XPPA Class from the list.

    3. ClickApply Changes. The data is written in to PA.logthat is available at the following location:

P9000 Performance Advisor Database Listener service does not start afterinstallation or upgrade

After installing or upgrading P9000 Performance Advisor, the HP StorageWorks P9000 PerformanceAdvisor Database Listener service might not start automatically.

    Cause

The HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Database Listener service might not have startedafter an upgrade. It can be due to an incorrect DNS name or a change in port number mentioned inthe listener.oraandtnsnames.orafiles.

    Resolution

Perform the steps listed to resolve the error:

Start the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Database Listener service manually bycompleting the following steps:

    1. Open the listener.oraandtnsnames.orafiles available in the following location:%PADB_HOME%\oradb\ADMIN\NETWORK.

    2. If an incorrect DNS name is specified, replace it with the correct DNS name of the managementstation. If the problem persists, replace the DNS name with the IP address of the managementstation.

If a different port number is specified, change the port number to 1521, as P9000 PerformanceAdvisor uses port 1521 for the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Database Listenerservice.

    3. Restart the HP StorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Database Listener service.

Go to Start> Runand type services.msc. In the Servicesdialog box, verify that the HPStorageWorks P9000 Performance Advisor Database Listener service has started.

    Cause

It may be due to the following reasons:

Real-time service is not running on the selected host agent.

P9000 Performance Advisor host agent is not responding to your requests, as the specified hostname does not exist.

Check if another user accessing the same management station has triggered another real-timeperformance data collection. If you try to connect to a host agent that is already collecting thereal-time data initiated through another instance of P9000 Performance Advisor, the existingconnection is discontinued and the above-mentioned error message is displayed.

    Resolution

To overcome the issue, perform the following steps:

    1. Verify if the real-time server (HP P9000 Performance Advisor RealTime Server) is running on the

host. Restart the service if it has stopped. For P9000 Performance Advisor Real-time to run, the management station (MS) must be able toping the host agent (HA) using the hostname(FQDN) of the HA.

    2. Verify if the host agent name displayed in P9000 Performance Advisor is correct. It appears inthe HostAgentlist on the RealTimeChart screen.

You can also ping the host agent to check if it is responding to your requests. The host agentname should be the same as displayed under HostAgentin the RealTimeChart screen.

Also, verify if there is a correct mapping of the IP address to the host name. You can find thismapping information in the :\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hostsfile on your management station. If the mapping between the IP address and the correspondinghost name is incorrect, edit the hostsfile to replace the existing IP address with the new one

and save the changes. Ensure that the IP address and the host name are separated by a space.

Host agent records do not appear in P9000 Performance Advisor after an install

or upgradeThis section discusses troubleshooting P9000 Performance Advisor management station and hostagent connectivity issues. When a host agent is unable to contact P9000 Performance Advisor, thehost agent might not appear under the Host Informationtab in P9000 Performance Advisor. Thereasons for the errors and the steps to resolve the issues are described as follows:

    Cause

The configured settings for the antivirus firewall installed on the management station might be blockingthe communication between the management station and the host agent.

    Resolution

Look for the following error in the PerformanceAdvisor.logfile. On a Windows host, thePerformanceAdvisor.log file is located in the :\Program Files\xppa\hostagent\logfolder. If it is a custom Windows host agent installation, the file is locatedin the :\\hostagent\logfolder. Ona UNIX host, the file is located in the /opt/xppa/hostagent/logfolder.
