MAROON AND WHITE
HOWE, IN - On September 13, 2013 the board of trustees voted to change the name of The Howe School.
Responding to the vast majority of alumni and friends of Howe, The board of trustees selected Howe Military
Academy as the new name.
“We’re Howe Military once again!” said Jean Miller, director of development. “There was backlash among alumni
and friends of Howe when the name was changed to The Howe School.”
“The feeling around campus is that our darkest days are in the past. Howe Military Academy’s traditional
reputation as a private, Episcopalian college preparatory boarding school would never be what it is today
without the life changing benefits military structure brings to the school,” said Col. George Douglass (’60),
superintendent of Howe Military Academy.
Alumni should take heart that, although enrollment is at a low point, the school is not lowering its standards to
increase enrollment. Instead, a decision has been made to embark on the most comprehensive marketing program
the school has launched in more than two decades. Howe’s reputation has been built over many decades of
excellence. This has been tarnished somewhat in the recent past. This program is aimed to rejuvenate Howe’s
stature.

“We have an outstanding Corps of Cadets this
year. Smart kids with solid character. I believe
reemphasizing our military traditions will help in our
recruiting efforts. Howe Military is who we are.
There will no longer be any confusion about our
school’s purpose and mission,” said Maj. Tam Haas
(‘60), director of admissions.
Howe Military Academy is entering a period of
great change and forward thinking. On the
academic side the school is in the process of
bolstering its STEM education curriculum by
establishing a competitive robotics team.
“Robotics will serve to not only provide interested
cadets invaluable hands-on experience with
complex STEM concepts, but make them more
attractive to colleges and universities, not to
mention future employers,” said Steve Clark, long
time science, engineering, and industrial arts master
at Howe.
The transition from The Howe School to Howe
Military Academy is just the beginning of the
rededication to our history and our values.
“In the recent past there were some who thought we
needed to neuter our military traditions. In reality,
all it did was cause discord between alumni and
the administration, confusing prospective families as
to who we are. The board’s decision will rebuild
many bridges for alumni and friends back to
Howe,” said Brian D. Gray, marketing liaison for
Howe Military Academy.

Founders’ Day Weekend 2013 Round Up
October 2013 - Vol. 3, Issue 12

Founders’ Day Weekend 2013 was an event to remember with
several fun activities all over Howe’s campus. Friday the cadets
enjoyed a half day of school and then participated in energetic
competitive games against classes. There was a water balloon toss,
a game of tug of war, and the favorite: pie in the face. Coming out
on top of the competitions was the Junior class by winning the most
events. Great job Juniors!
Friday afternoon cadets honored the founders of our great school
with a short ceremony where they laid wreaths on their grave stones.
As families began to arrive, cadets enjoyed an evening with their
parents.
A Homecoming Soccer game against the Lakeland Lakers kicked
off the events on Saturday. While the soccer team gave a valiant
effort they were unable to capture a victory. During the game
members of our Parents’ Association organized and held a concession
stand that was filled with delicious food and was a great success.
Again, Saturday afternoon cadets enjoyed more time with their
families and friends who came to celebrate.
The John B. Howe Black Tie Dinner Saturday evening was a
delightful engagement for all who attended. The food was delicious,
the silent auction was a thrilling success, the seniors were recognized
for the first time this year, and the 2013 Homecoming King and
Queen were crowned. After the organized events, the dining hall
was transformed into an enthusiastic dance party as the DJs lit up the
night for the cadets. The Corps enjoyed their free time with each
other and invited several from the crowd to join them in the talented
performances.
Sunday morning chapel service was a beautiful event and great
way to highlight the cadets’ scholastic efforts and true talents.
Several new cadets were honored for passing their New Cadet Test
and Cadet Brandon Leisure and Cadet Leita Pleau were both
honored by receiving generous scholarships.
After chapel, the weekend’s events were brought to a close with a
wonderfully performed Sunday parade by the entire Corps.
Howe Military Academy has many things to be thankful for and it
all starts with the brave efforts of our founders! Thank You.

Trip to Camp Atterbury
On September 30th 2013, my classmates and I had to the opportunity to take a trip
to Camp Atterbury. It was a great experience and everyone seemed to have a good
time. While we were there, we were able to do a number of things such as use the
simulated weapons they had, be flipped over in an IED simulator and have target
practice with simulated weapons. For me personally, the trip changed my perspective;
after school I would like to join the United State Air Force and the trip help turn the
challenges that the men and women in the military deal with into reality.

Landscaping Around Admin Building September 2013
Over the last month Howe’s campus has
been spruced up! The administration
building got a makeover around the
entrance of the building. The trees were
trimmed and landscaping was added
around the sign, Herrick Statue, and trees
out front.
Maj. Haas has been diligently improving
the campus appearance as well with the
help of work-aid students. Together they
have been continuously picking apples off
the ground, pulling weeds, raking leaves
and picking up trash. We appreciate those
who have worked so hard to keep our
campus beautiful!
The Electronic Sign is Here! September 14, 2013
Our new electronic sign is up and
running! The sign has been a great
addition to campus and lets us spread
the word of current and future events in
the community. Thank you to all that
helped bring the sign to campus!
