Project:  TGS-‐NOPEC  Headquarters  Location:  Houston,  Texas  Scope:  97,500  sf,  3  story,  build-‐to-‐suit  Developer:  Patrinely  Contractor:  Harvey  Builders  Architect:  Gensler    Furniture  Dealer:  J.  Tyler  Services  Furnishings  and  services:  Herman  Miller  Canvas  workstations,  Herman  Miller  Mirra  task  seating,  Herman  Miller  Classics  Collection,  Charles  Eames  and  George  Nelson,  Bernhardt,  Skyline  Art,  CF  Group/Falcon    December  saw  the  opening  of  a  dynamic  new  headquarters  facility  in  Houston  of  TGS-‐NOPEC,  a  leading  international  provider  of  multi-‐client  geoscience  data  to  oil  and  gas  exploration  companies.  Amanda  Meininger,  designer  for  Gensler  states,    “The  building  was  designed  to  meet  the  company's  current  needs,  but  also  allow  for  growth  in  the  future.  The  workplace  environment  was  designed  to  transition  the  employees  from  a  75%  closed  office/25%  open  office  ratio  to  a  25%  closed  office/75%  open  office  ratio.  One  of  the  goals  for  the  design  of  the  project  was  to  create  a  progressive  work  environment  that  would  attract  and  retain  young  talent,  stimulate  productivity,  and  increase  employee  satisfaction.    Working  closely  with  the  Gensler  team,  the  J.  Tyler  product  application  and  specification  team  lead  by  Project  Designer/Manager  Paulette  Sullivan,  assisted  with  developing  workstation  and  office  typicals  using  the  Herman  Miller  Canvas  system.  The  objective  was  to  focus  on  supporting  and  facilitating  Gensler’s  workplace  program  design  and  transform  TGS’s  work  environment  to  state-‐of-‐the-‐art.    The  workspace  was  opened  up  flipping  private  offices  to  the  core  and  workstations  to  the  glass  perimeter  walls.  Panel  heights  were  lowered  and  there  was  extensive  use  of  glass  to  allow  everyone  to  benefit  from  the  natural  light.    “In  keeping  with  Gensler’s  design  program  we  were  charged  with  assisting  in  the  specification  of  furniture  system  solutions  utilizing  the  broad  range  of  functional  components  of  Herman  Miller’s  Canvas  system.”  states  Gary  Longbotham  of  J.Tyler.  “Our  Project  Designer/Manager,  Paulette  Sullivan,  produced  dozens  of  configuration  options.  High  priority  was  placed  on  functionality,  efficiency,  comfort,  ergonomics  and  supporting  the  recognition  of  the  importance  of  expanded  communication  among  TGS  teams.

  January Project Highlight Cntd

J.Tyler  developed  pre-‐project  “thought  starters”  and  budgetary  pricing  which  also  provided  the  means  of  demonstrating  that  by  embracing  space  saving  features  and  improved  functionality  in  the  workstation  design  TGS  would  recover  costs  through  ongoing  cost  savings.  Lead  by  the  vision  of    CEO,  Robert  Hobbs  and  his  project  team  lead  by  Genie  Erneta,  VP  of  Human  Resources  and  Candy  Grimm,  Facility  Manager,  TGS  recognized  the  long  term  benefits  of  tools  such  as  monitor  arms  to  support  the  five  monitors  needed  in  every  station,  articulating  keyboard  trays  and  highly  functional  task  seating.  They  understood  that  healthy  and  comfortable  work  environments  improve  employee  performance  which  translates  into  profitability  and  measurable  return  on  investment  (ROI).    As  stated  by  Amanda  Meininger,  Project  Designer  for  Gensler,  a  top  priority  of  TGS  was  to  create  a  work  environment  that  would  not  only  maximize  performance  of  its  teams,  but  be  an  employee  recruiting  and  retainage  asset.  In  order  to  do  this,  a  comprehensive  program  had  to  include  the  ability  to  support  the  full  spectrum  of  today’s  workforce  which  includes  up  to  five  generations  of  workers  with  varying  styles,  needs  and  wants.  From  Baby  Boomers  to  Millennials,  there  needed  to  be  functionality,  amenities,  aesthetics  and  technology  to  satisfy  all  work  styles  now  and  into  the  future.    Keeping  these  objectives  in  mind  Meininger  explains,  “Using  ultra-‐saturated  colors  can  be  very  scary  for  some  clients,  we  tried  to  be  very  smart  about  how  we  incorporated  them.  We  contained  the  colors  to  specific  features  like  the  phone  rooms,  workstation  panel  fabrics,  and  a  custom  carpet  designed  to  fade  from  dark  gray  to  chartreuse  and  back.  I  love  using  bright  colors  when  I  get  the  chance  because  I  feel  like  color  carries  so  much  energy  with  it.  It  can  be  really  stimulating.”    “We  used  some  special  tricks  to  add  value  architecturally  as  well.  In  lieu  of  lacquer  panels  in  the  elevator  lobbies,  panels  were  fabricated  from  glossy  plastic  laminate.  There  are  several  wood  feature  walls  through  the  project  including  one  in  the  lobby,  the  visualization  room,  and  at  the  connecting  stairs.  We  used  prefabricated  hickory  floor  planks.  They  had  the  perfect  earthy  look  with  their  hand-‐scraped  finish,  were  well-‐priced,  and  easy  to  install.”    “I  am  very  proud  of  our  team  at  J.Tyler,”  states  Longbotham.  “We  are  absolutely  committed  to  keeping  everyone’s  eye  on  the  ball  for  ROI.  The  old  saying  “It  takes  money  to  make  money”  is  true  in  the  sense  that  by  educating  our  clients  on  the  ROI  of  embracing  good  functional  design,  efficiency  improving  ergonomic  tools  and  improved  workplace  communication,  the  client  can  not  only  afford  to  invest  in  these  tools,  but  they  cannot  afford  not  to  invest  in  them….because  many  of  their  competitors  are.    In  this  sense  we  are  able  to  help  our  customers  become  more  profitable  versus  simply  selling  them  furniture  and  do  our  part  to  help  place  them  in  a  more  competitive  performance  posture  over  their  competitors.  TGS  is  a  terrific  example  of  smart  design.”
