Houston property values are among the few to drop in the northwest area in 2015.

A BC Assessment report says the total value of residential properties in Houston dropped 1.7 percent

in 2015, from $159,963,000 in 2014 to $157,184,000 in 2015.

But even with this drop overall, BC Assessment reports that the average value of homes in Houston is the same.

The value of an average single family dwelling was estimated

$140,000 in 2015, the same as it was valued in 2014.

The total value of

businesses in Houston has actually gone up 0.6 percent, from $56,771,000 in 2014 to

$57,102,000 in 2015. Those numbers are

based on information collected July 2014 and local real estate agencies agree they are still accurate.

Remax owner Lia Long says overall property values are “pretty much the same” this year as last year and she’s been

surprised by the busy market.

Last year “actually ended up being one the busiest years I’ve had, which is surprising because of the mill closure,” she said.

“It was a very good year. It started in June, and it’s been very steady.”

Even now, during

the season when real estate is normally pretty quiet, Long is still keeping busy.

She says Remax sold 63 properties in Houston and � ve in Topley in 2014 and now she feels like they’re almost short on listings.

Granisle Hunting Guide Out� tter Stewart Berg is facing a total of $20,425 � ne for hunting violations.

Sentenced in Smithers court January 6, Berg was found guilty for guiding a client to shoot a grizzly in the wrong management area in the fall of 2011.

“He received a number of letters from the Wildlife Branch saying his quota had changed, indicating that he was no longer able to harvest grizzly bears in a particular m a n a g e m e n t unit,” said Kevin Nixon, Sergeant of Conservation Services in the Bulkley-Stikine Zone.

“For whatever reason, he continued to hunt there and had a client harvest a grizzly bear in an area where he was told he could not harvest a grizzly bear anymore.”

The grizzly was shot by a Mexican client on the east side of Babine Lake, part of region seven near the border to region six, said Sgt. Nixon.

Berg was sentenced guilty for three violations by the Honourable Judge Christine Birnie.

With two years to pay, Berg was � ned $15,000 for the grizzly shot outside his management area, as well as $2,000 for incomplete guide declarations and $2,000 for late guide submissions.

“We had a lot of listings in the summer, but almost everything sold. Now there’s only 29 listings in total. In the summer there was 80.”

Long says half of the buyers were from other areas, including Fort St. John, Yukon, Kitimat, Terrace, Williams Lake, Prince George, Quesnel and Alberta.

“Our area is very affordable so we get a lot of inquiries because of that… people can live on one income quite comfortably and there’s quite a bit of work in the area as well. A lot of people can work camp jobs and live here… and this area offers a great lifestyle.

“We’re way cheaper than Smithers. The same house

in Smithers would probably cost $125 to $150,000 more.”

It also helps that we’re “right in the centre of the Prince George to Prince Rupert area and there’s lots of development and things going to happen in this area,” Long said.

“People’s attitudes are really positive.”

Most in demand are small acreages and single family dwellings, Long says.

BC Assessment says other northwestern communities are seeing increasing property values.

“Most homes in the area are worth more,” said Geoff Radtke, Deputy Assessor with the North Region.

“Most home owners in the Northwest Assessment Area will see changes in the 10 to 35 percent range.”

Property values in places like Kitimat, Terrace, Port Edward, and Hazelton jumped over 30 percent in 2015.

Prince Rupert and Stewart saw property values climb over 10 percent.

Smithers homes are increasing close to � ve percent, and Telkwa homes are down 0.7 percent in value.

The value of businesses in Smithers is up 2.6 percent, and in Telkwa they’re up 6.8 percent.

Long from Remax says she’s “really optimistic” about what’s to come for Houston.

“The market has been really good and I think it’s going to get even better. Hopefully we’ll see prices start to climb a little bit this year.”

A release from C o n s e r v a t i o n Services says the sentence takes into account the typical revenue collected by guide outfitters with international clients, which ranges between $10,000 and $15,000 for harvesting a grizzly in B.C.

The courts directed Berg to pay half of his $19,000 fine to the Grizzly Bear Trust Fund.

He also pays $1,425 to the courts as a 15-percent victims surcharge.

Sgt. Nixon says they considered a sanction on Berg’s business, but decided not to pursue that.

“This is his first offence and first conviction,” said Sgt. Nixon.

“We’re not looking to put him out of business, we’re looking for him to correct his ways.”

ACT is gearing up for the second annual Winterfest celebration on Family Day and the week prior.

Local groups and clubs are running events February 3 to 9 for people to do snowshoeing, street

hockey, curling, sledding, and free swim at the pool.

There will be activities for all age groups throughout the week, climaxing on the weekend and the Family Day holiday, said ACT co-lead Dawn Potvin.

“The goal is to have fun and promote healthy

winter activity in Houston!”

“We are very excited to be able to host Winterfest again this year. The support last year from local organizations and volunteers was unparalleled and we look forward for this to be an annual event.

“Houston has a lot

Getting started on the right foot

The changing of the calendar on the wall brings the promise of a new beginning.

Of course the baggage of the previous 12 months is carried over into January but there’s still the feeling of a fresh start, even if it’s largely in our own minds.

And it’s important to kid ourselves a little as the feel-good atmosphere of the holiday season fades, especially when facing the long, cold stretch that is known as the current month in these parts.

Procrastination and just sheer laziness are tempting as we head out on our way into the unknown that is 2015 but it’s important to take advantage of the opportunity that a blank page represents in our lives.

We may be 25, 45 or 65 but a new year, heck even a new day, always provides the opportunity to make positive changes in our lives that bene� t not only us but our families, friends and communities as well.

Hopefully we soaked up enough goodwill over the holidays that it carries far into the new year and we become a little bit closer to that person we want to be or at least feel we should be attempting to be.

Of course there will be bumps along the road to our goals, but as they say it’s not so much what happens to us in life as how we respond to the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or something to that effect.

Resolutions are good but often ineffective, it’s likely you’ve broken a few already and it’s only Jan. 4. Making realistic and manageable changes in our daily lives towards long-term goals, that may or may not include resolutions, is likely a better way to achieve a happier and more satisfying 2015 for the majority of us.

Up to snow goodOn January 5,

2015 my children re-ceived something I al-ways wanted as a kid but never got: a snow day.

“Wouldn’t it be cool if school is can-celled tomorrow?” my 14-year-old son had asked as he watched the � urry of � akes falling outside our liv-ing room window on the last Sunday of the winter break.

“Keep dreaming,” I said. “My brother and I used to wish for the same thing and it never happened.”

Monday morning, on their � rst scheduled day back after their two-week hiatus from school, I was anxious to have the house to myself. I woke Sam and Daisy up, fed them breakfast and made their lunches. As my husband shovelled the driveway for the fourth time in the last

24 hours, I started the truck and the kids got dressed.

“Chelsey said school is cancelled,” my 11-year-old daughter said excit-edly as I walked back inside.

Skeptical, I looked online at a local news site to prove that her friend’s text must be mistaken.

“The superinten-dent says they haven’t declared a snow day in 35 years,” I read from the report. “So unless there’s a major power outage or road closures, schools will be open as usual.”

Daisy looked dis-appointed.

“Jake said school’s cancelled!” Sam said, bounding up the stairs with a big grin on his face.

“It’s not,” his little sister grumbled. And then Sam looked bummed out as well.

With my boots and coat still on, I de-cided I’d better dou-ble check with the Central Okanagan School District’s website before we left in the truck. To my surprise the site announced a district-wide snow day. After reading the report aloud I stood there in shock as my kids did the happy dance.

When I shared the notice on my Facebook page the reaction was mixed. Some were as stunned as I was, others said they saw it coming and a few thought it was ludicrous.

“We treat our kids today like � ne china,” wrote one friend who grew up in a much snowier area with no sidewalks dur-ing the ‘50s when they had to walk to school during blizzards. “Give me a break. It’s

time for kids to face the inevitable of life’s challenges, such as a snowfall.”

But if enough roads and sidewalks weren’t plowed and the school district’s superinten-dent deemed it unsafe enough to call for a snow day, I was okay with that.

About an hour lat-er, while Sam, Daisy and our dogs played in a foot and a half of the � uffy white stuff in the back yard, I called my father to ask him if he’d ever had a snow day. He hadn’t either, but he did remember the winter of 1964 when he and my mom were in grade ten and the dress code at their public school in North Vancouver was tem-porarily altered.

“It was freezing cold so the girls didn’t have to wear skirts or dresses that week,” he said. “But our princi-

pal announced on the intercom that even though they were al-lowed to wear slacks during the storm, they still had to wear their girdles under-neath.” Up until then my dad didn’t even know girls wore those uncomfortable look-ing compression gar-ments he’d seen on his mother.

“I guess there was a fear of jiggling bot-toms or something,” he said, laughing.

Wow, how times have changed.

The B.C. government is preparing for increased shipping traf� c on the North Coast, from lique� ed natural gas to containers and bulk commodity exports.

The planning and policy of� ce of the B.C. Ministry of Transportation has posted an invitation to bid on a “marine services needs assessment” for B.C. shipping, with a closing date of Jan. 16.

It avoids mentioning oil shipping, but that would be included in the study.

“The ministry is interested in how increases in vessel traf� c may impact demand for marine services along the coast,” says the invitation on Canada’s Business Network. “Proposed projects include container terminals, energy projects including natural gas liquefaction and export terminals, an bulk commodity

export facilities.“Some of these

projects proposed new elements for the province, whether it be handling new commodities such as LNG and other energy products, or developing port projects in parts of the province where the marine services industry is not well developed, such as Kitimat and Stewart.”

Kitimat is proposed as an export site for LNG and Alberta heavy oil, with a history as an

aluminum smelting and petroleum products centre.

Stewart, a remote coastal community at the head of the Portland Canal, has a population of about 500 across from Alaska’s Misty Fiords National Park.

Chinese investors behind Canada Stewart Energy Group Ltd. have proposed a � oating LNG facility to begin production in 2017, with a second phase of land-based production to follow.

No gas pipeline conversion to oil, B.C. vowsBy Tom Fletcher

The B.C. government has adopted a regulation to prevent natural gas pipelines from being converted to carry oil to the North Coast.

Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman announced the regulation Tuesday, covering six pipelines proposed to link to lique� ed natural gas export facilities in the Prince Rupert, Kitimat and Squamish areas. He said other

pipelines could be added if necessary.

The move comes after the Energy East proposal to switch a gas pipeline to carry oil from Alberta to re� neries in Quebec and New Brunswick.

Chief Barry Nikal of the Moricetown Indian Band endorsed the new regulation, but other aboriginal leaders and the NDP aren’t satis� ed with a cabinet order that could be quickly changed.

promised legislation to prevent oil sands crude from being carried in pipelines built for gas at a public meeting in Moricetown in April 2014. In November, Donaldson presented his own private member’s bill to have the legislature endorse the move, after Coleman said he would use regulation instead.

“We do not want to see this used as an end run by Enbridge Northern Gateway to be using any proposed natural gas pipelines to transmit diluted

bitumen from the Alberta tar sands to the North Coast,” Donaldson said.

He was supported by Wet’suwet’en hereditary chief John Ridsdale, who visited the B.C. legislature before joining anti-oil pipeline protesters on Burnaby Mountain.

“The proposed routes are actually all in our major spawning beds,” Ridsdale said. “And you’ve got to realize that the water that comes from Wet’suwet’en territory also goes to the Fraser River and

to the Skeena River. So what we’re doing is protecting everything on behalf of British Columbians.”

Ridsdale is the highest ranking member of the Tsayu Clan, one of � ve clans and 38 house territories of the Wet’suwet’en. The Tsayu have rejected both oil and gas pipelines crossing their territory, and another house, the Unist’ot’en, has built a settlement with the help of outside environmentalists in an effort to block any

pipeline development.The regulation

prevents the “ a u t o m a t i c conversion” of pipelines, Aboriginal Relations Minister John Rustad said in a statement. It covers the following proposed projects:

• Coastal GasLink, to supply the Shell-led LNG Canada project at Bish Cove near Kitimat

• Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Project, to supply P E T R O N A S - l e d Paci� c Northwest LNG at Lelu Island

• Paci� c Trail Pipelines Project, to supply Chevron-led Kitimat LNG

• Paci� c Northern Gas Looping Project, to supply Douglas Channel LNG, a Texas private proposal for Kitimat

• Eagle Mountain Wood� bre Gas Project, an expansion of an existing gas line to a former pulp mill site near Squamish

• West Coast Connector, to supply Prince Rupert LNG, led by BG Group, which has delayed its decision to proceed.

on Highway 16 near Williams Crescent at 6

p.m. Jan. 1. Sgt. Rose says both the deer and pickup were gone when police arrived.

***Police got report

of mischief at the Houston Secondary School at 9 a.m. Jan. 2. Sgt. Rose says a window was broken but entry was not gained to the school. It is believed to have been between Dec. 31 and Jan. 2. Anyone with information is asked to contact Houston RCMP at 250-845-2204 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

ended on Highway 16 one kilometre west of the Morice River Road at 1:45 p.m. Jan 5. Sgt. Rose says the minivan was waiting to turn off the highway when a pickup hit it from behind. No one was

seriously injured but a few were brought to the Houston clinic for observation. The minivan was significantly damaged, the the pickup had

minor damage. Sgt. Rose says the police believe the cause was the snowy conditions and slippery road.

***Police got report

of a long-haul truck driver near Houston experiencing medical issues at 7:45 p.m. Jan. 6. Sgt. Rose says Police detachments along Highway 16 partnered with the driver’s cell phone provider to locate the male at a rest stop west of Prince George. An ambulance attended to help the male.

***A tractor trailer

hit the ditch near the Hamblin Frontage Road at 11:55 p.m. Jan. 7. Sgt. Rose says the semi-truck was making a left turn when the trailer caught the soft shoulder of the road and slid into the ditch. A tow truck helped the semi back onto the road and no charges were laid.

***Police stopped

a drunk driver on Grantham Road at 1:10 a.m. Jan. 8. Sgt. Rose says the driver failed the roadside screen and was issued a 90-day driving prohibition. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

***In nine past days,

police had 68 calls for service, including 10 traffic complaints, four false alarms, four abandoned 9-1-1 calls and two bylaw complaints.

I had a friend who said he had a special relationship with God in which he could know the future. At one point, when he and his wife were going to have a child, he said that it was going to be a boy. When I asked him how he knew this, he very speci� cally said “God told me it is going to be a boy.” He was so sure that he had a name, the name of a boy picked out for the child. He told many others this very same thing.

When the child was born, it was a girl! If he were just guessing, the odds would have been 50-50. But he said he had heard from God, if he had heard from God it surely would have been a boy. It is obvious that he was not hearing from God because God knows the future and he does not lie. (Isaiah 42:9; 46:19; Psalm 89:35; Titus 1:2)

There were many prophecies made by God’s prophets about Jesus many years before they were ful� lled. He was to be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14); this was ful� lled when Jesus was born to through the virgin Mary (Matthew 1:23). Some of the details of his cruci� xion were foretold by King David in Psalm 22. These were ful� lled in great detail when Jesus died on the cross. He was betrayed for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 27:3;5,) this was foretold by the prophet Zechariah over 500 years previously (Zechariah 11:12,13) .

When God speaks we know it is true. We can trust what he has to say, whether he is speaking of the condition of the human heart, the way we should live or of future things that are still to happen. He has spoken to us through his word the Bible. That is why it is so important for us to read, study and obey what he has written for us there. He has given us, through his word, everything we need to know to be able to live a life pleasing to him.

When Jesus was tempted by the devil he quoted scriptures to him saying “It is written” after every temptation, thus silencing the devil.

If it was important for Jesus to know the scriptures, how much more important is it for us to search and know God’s word?

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip people to do every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16,17 NLT

Council turns down wage increaseBy Jackie Lieuwen

Houston Today

Houston council turned down an annual increase in wages at the council meeting last Tuesday.

Currently, the mayor is paid $15,783 and Councillors are

paid $7,891 a year. According to

municipal bylaw number 1000, mayor and council wages increase by the BC Consumer Index each year, which is 1.25 percent in 2015.

“I think we need to lead by example,”

said Councillor Rick Lundrigan.

“With having to make hard choices in order to reduce our budget, how irresponsible would it be of council to allow a raise in our own stipends?”

“If you’re looking

for money to do this job, you’re in the wrong business.”

Councillor Tim Anderson agreed, saying that it doesn’t seem right to accept increased wages with all the tax increases coming.

Mayor Shane

Brienen said the District of Houston pay is fairly consistent with other municipalities of similar size.

Mayor and council voted in favour of waiving increases in their stipends.

Resident concerned about hole in the dikeBy Jackie Lieuwen

Houston Today

Houston resident Carol Daykin is raising concern about a hole in the dike northwest of 6th Street.

Talking to council last Tuesday, Daykin says it’s a major problem and it’s a dangerous part of the walking perimeter trail.

“It’s dangerous, it’s narrow, it’s falling apart and there is actually a hole in it,” she said of the dike.

“It is not unfeasible that that part of the dike could be breached very easily if we had a high

run off… It has had nothing done to it in 15 years and I would really like to see it upgraded.”

C h i e f Administrative Of� cer Michael Glavin says the hole is “not a concern with regards to the structural integrity of the dike.”

“The hole is a tripping hazard, however the dike itself is sound,” he said.

“Although the dike is narrow, there is a concrete retaining wall which supports the dike stricter on the land side.”

The District budgets $30,000 annually for dike maintenance but

Glavin says this section of the dike has not been worked on for some time.

But District of Houston staff agree that the section of the dike needs improvement, he said.

They are preparing a report to council for February regarding the upgrade, which includes increasing the width of the berm and adding armour to the waterside of the dike.

The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako is seeking applicants for the position of Sustainability Assistant within the Environmental Services Department. The position is permanent, full-time, and situated in Burns Lake, BC. The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako is a non-union organization.

Responsibilities of the Sustainability Assistant include: • Overseeing the development, implementation and evaluation of waste reduction initiatives; • Development and implementation of public education programs; • Assisting in the development, implementation and reporting on the RDBN’s Corporate Energy and Emissions Plan and other sustainability initiatives as required; • Contract administration and report preparation; • Maintaining and developing databases, clerical work; and • Overseeing the RDBN’s invasive plant program.

Eugene Edward Lund March 1, 1947 – December 31, 2014

Eugene passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 with Chau at his side. He was predeceased by his parents Carl and Elinor Lund, sister Eunice Lennie and nephew Robert Lennie.

Survived by his loving family - brother Darcy (Suzette) Lund, sister Sandra (Arie) Birston, nephew Richard (Shari) Lennie, niece Melanie Ness, niece Valerie (Mark) Strickland-Lennie, niece Savannah Lund and nephew Levi Lund great nephews and nieces Aiden, Aryna, Tanner, Trey, Michael, Elizabeth, Brae and loving friends that were his family - Chau, Khon and Jonathan Ly as well as many other family members and friends.

Eugene was born in Burns Lake BC and lived most of his life in Houston BC. One of the things he loved the most was the time he spent with his closest friends, his family Khon, Chau and Jonathan. He loved being their personal chauffeur and could always be found at Lee’s Garden hanging out, drinking coffee and being very well fed on a daily basis.

Eugene left school in Grade 10; however, he continued to learn on his own. He was a very intelligent man who taught himself how to fix anything and everything. Mechanics came naturally to him. He loved old cars, motorbikes, snowmobiling and go carts and enjoyed maintaining and fixing them as required. He had a knack for figuring things out; whether it be engines, motors, appliances, the intricate tying of flies for fly fishing or rebuilding computers it was never a problem for him, he was always up to challenge.

Eugene loved music; his favourite song was “Born to be Wild.” Being adventuresome, Eugene loved traveling, it didn’t matter if it was back packing around Europe and Brazil or riding his motorcycle through the United States and Canada he loved doing it all. He spent a lot of time sledding on the Telkwa Range, drag racing, tenting, and later on camping in the motor home at Morice Lake, just a few of his many passions. He even won the title of “King of the Hill.”

Eugene was respected in the community and the trucking industry. Prior to retirement, he drove many years for others and later bought his own truck and became an owner/operator.

Eugene was a very kind and gentle man with a big heart, a loyal friend with a willingness to help when asked, a soft spot for stray cats and a wonderful sense of humor, he will be missed by all who knew him.
