However, we can forget why we do and say what we do. You might be so comfortable that you say, “I don’t need to even read these little blurbs I know all there is to know about the Mass.” That would be one way to go but why? Blessing ourselves with Holy Water is one of these instinc- tive things. When we enter the Church, we dip our fingers into the holy water to bless ourselves by making the Sign of the Cross. Historically, a person would sprinkle the faithful with holy water as they entered the church. This person was called hydrokometes or “introducer by water.” Over time, that custom changed and now we simply dip our fingers into the water and bless ourselves with the Sign of the Cross. The next time you bless yourself, try saying this as you make the Sign of the Cross: “Jesus, be in my mind, in my heart and all around me.” You could use this prayer many times throughout your day.

PARTICIPATING IN THE MASS

For those of us who have attended Mass for a very long time, the words and gestures are often done by instinct. They are as comfortable as they are automatic. Abby Dunnan and Robin Barr will marry at St. Brigid of Kildare on July 29, 2017.

Christy McNelly and Cory Bradham will marry at St. Brigid of Kildare on August 5, 2017.

Thank you to all who have supported the 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. We are very close but still need $30,153 to reach our $275,000 goal. The funds from this year’s Appeal will enable us to reach out to the needy and to assure a better future for our neighbors in the Diocese. Please consider a donation to this important cause. No gift is too small. Thank you for your generosity.

Young Adults

Are you over the age of 25, living in the Dublin

area, and still on your parent’s record?

If so, please register on your own, today! Registra-tion forms are available on the kiosk in the gathering area, or stop by the parish office and we will give you a form.

The profound truth of our existence is thus contained in this surprising mystery: every creature, and in

particular every human person is the fruit of God’s thought and an act of his love, a love that is boundless,

faithful and everlasting. - USCCB

Studying the past to gain insight

into the present is exactly why ex-

ploring the story of the Church can

be so important to our faith. This

concise history of the Catholic

Church tells the story of the two

thousand-year relationship between Jesus and the believ-

ers who have followed him. It is a story of people: peas-

ants and popes, saints and heretics, martyrs and apostates.

Mostly, the story shows how common people throughout

the ages have passed on the faith from generation to gen-

eration and tried to live the life of Christ. The story of the

Church is also about the Spirit of God who dwells with us

always. We will use the book entitled A Popular History

of the Catholic Church by Karl Koch (available

through Amazon). We meet after 9:00 AM Mass (about

9:35) in Hendricks’ Hall until 11:15 AM. The first ses-

sion will be September 5, 2017. Because of its scope, this

topic will last for about 8 weeks. –Sister Teresa Tuite, OP

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY

OF ORDINARY TIME

ST. BRIGID IS MY HOME

FAMILIAR FACES

Jennifer Maloney

Jennifer Maloney has been associated with the St. Brigid Religious Education program since 2002 when her oldest son, Peter (finished in 2011), started in the

Kindergarten program. She has been volunteering for the past nine years; she started in 2008 when Christopher, her youngest, started in Kindergarten. (There is also John who finished in 2014.) Jennifer has served as a Hall Monitor, a Classroom Aide and even as a Catechist for one year in the Fourth Grade! “Although parents are the primary educators of their children in teach-ing and instilling a love of their Catholic Faith, Religious Education also plays a very important role in a child's faith formation. I wanted to be a Religious Education volunteer so that I could share in and be a part of my children's Religious Education faith formation. Being a volunteer makes it easier to connect the home and Religious Education teachings.” Jennifer takes time to volunteer because she thinks it is very important, she loves being with the kids, and she wants her children to see her volun-teering while they attend Religious Education. “It's fun!” describes Jennifer, and “it is also a way that I can contribute to the St. Brigid community.” Thank you, Jennifer, for faithfully serving our program for so many years; you are truly a blessing.

Our parish sends a monthly email newsletter called the Common Threads, as well as a weekly Gospel Reflec-tion written by our clergy. To sign up, either stop in the parish office to let them know you’d like to sign up, or visit www.stbrigidofkildare.org and click E-Newsletter Sign Up, and fill out the form.

The Dominican Sisters of Peace are in search

of individuals willing and able to assist them

at the Mohun Health Care Center adjacent to

their Motherhouse located next to the cam-

pus of Ohio Dominican University in North-

east Columbus. The specific need is to have women and

men who will “Take a Sister to Lunch” or shopping or to

a movie occasionally. It helps the sisters to get “out and

about,” and to have a one-on-one relationship at times.

For anyone interested, please contact Mrs. Angie

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY

Becoming Heart Sisters: A Bible Study on Authentic Friendships

Woman to woman friend-ships are as important to our mental, physical and spiritual health as rest, exercise and prayer. We don’t just want friends – we need friends. God created us to be in relationship with others. During this program, we will dig into timeless truths of scripture and see examples of friendships. If you are not sure if you want to participate in this program or if you want more infor-mation, come to the Program Overview and sample session on August 23 from 7:00- 8:30pm. There will be time for you to ask questions and to see what a session would be like. Hopefully, this session will give you the information you need in deciding if this program is for you. Registration has begun and will continue until September 1, 2017. Total Cost (which includes your book) is $30.00 – payment is due at first session). Please register early, so we will have a suf-ficient number of books for the first session.

Have You Heard About Our New

St. Brigid Older Adult Program

Parishioners Helping Parishioners?

Older Adults: Do you want to stay at home safely, but need a little help getting to the store, a doctor appointment, or even need a ride to church? Do you need a little help organizing in your home, or would you just like a parish-ioner from St. Brigid to spend a little time with you every once in awhile?

Caregivers: Do you care for an older adult and need help or guid-ance? Do you need help under-standing the needs of an older loved one and learning what alternatives are available? It can all be very confusing, time consuming and stressful. The services pro-vided by Syntero are available at no charge and are de-signed to give you a helping hand and to assist you in be-coming a more effective caregiver, including the need for your own self-care and stress management.

Potential Volunteers: Do you have time to help an older adult parishioner in need? Do you feel called to help others or give back to the church? Helping an older adult parish-ioner can be very rewarding and is so appreciated by those who are in need. There are one-time and ongoing opportu-nities. We accommodate all schedules and will set up ei-ther a short or long term match with a parishioner in need. Opportunities are based on your schedule and flexibility -- any amount of time you're able to give is enough and Syn-tero will train you! Our focus at St. Brigid is hospitality, which means welcoming and helping each other. Please help us to further this goal, keeping in mind what Jesus taught us: “Whatever you did for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40.

If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, or if you are interested in learning more about the services available for yourself, a senior loved one, or a caregiver you know; or if you have time to help an older adult parish-ioner, please contact Kim VanHuffel at [email protected].

To provide these programs, St. Brigid of Kildare has part-nered with Syntero, Inc., formerly Dublin Counseling Cen-ter, a local non-profit agency that has been serving Dublin residents for 40 years. Thanks to the generous funding from the City of Dublin, Syntero's senior supportive services have now been expanded and are available to all Saint Brigid of Kildare parishioners through our Parishioners Helping Parishioners program. Syntero’s services can also link seniors with personal or mental health counseling for stress, anxiety or depression (office or home visits). There is no charge for these services.
