Father Anthony’s Christmas Message

The Word Became Flesh

My dear friends in Christ, Merry Christmas! Among many desires of parents today, the safety of their children is one of the non-negotiables. For safety, parents put up rail guards, install security systems, ensure that their children are well buckled up in their car seats, draw up and teach their children safety rules, set boundaries and curfews and ensure that their children are familiar with the family emergency contact list. A schoolteacher could lose his/her job, a sports coach could be dismissed, a politician could be voted out of office, individuals are prosecuted and jailed if they compromise the safety of a child. And so it is easy for us to understand the importance and need for safety, especially the safety of our children. But no rational human being would put their child through what the child Jesus went through on that first Christmas night. Mary and Joseph had to travel from Galilee to Bethlehem on foot for several days on rough dusty roads. Imagine the silence of the night broken only by the cry of wolves and bleeping of sheep, the fear that robbers could strike out of nowhere, the anxiety of finding themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere with no place to lay their heads, the stench of a cave used as barn with the overwhelming smell of manure, the anguish of a teenage Mary giving birth to her first child alone in a cave with her carpenter husband providing whatever help he can. You would think that God should have put in place all the necessary safety measures to ensure that His Son – the Savior of the world, who comes to us in a vulnerable state as a child – receives a safe and befitting welcome as most parents would do. But it was at life’s most dismal point that Christ chose to enter into human experience and sanctify it. Christmas celebrates the recollection of a great moment, a great turning point in the history of the world and our personal history. We celebrate our God who is timeless, but broke into human time, took on our flesh in order to pitch his tent among us so that He might show us his unconditional love. As we celebrate the birth of Christ, Jesus invites us to deepen our personal relationship with God, imitate his example of uncondi-tional love and share his joy in our relationship with others. As we sing joy to the world this season, find ways to bring that joy to individual hearts. Highlights of the Year 2019

Our parishes, Holy Trinity and St. John’s, were blessed in many ways in 2019. Our greatest blessing is all of you, our parish-ioners who support our church financially, those who volunteer countless hours to serve as sacristans, altar servers, lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, ushers, musicians, work in the office, prepare the Wednesday Night dinners, clean the church and parish hall, work in the yard, clean and change the light bulbs and provide supplies we need for Mass. Your love for Christ, your generous heart and dedication is extraordinary. Thank you.

O Come, Let Us Adore Him, Christ the Lord!

Page 5: Holy Trinity St. John Catholic Church the Baptist › 21140 › ... · Land showing the places where the hristmas story actually took place. Explore the true story of Mary and Joseph,

Father Anthony’s Christmas Message, Cont. We were also blessed to install a new Knights of Columbus Council of the Most Holy Trinity. Twenty-four men in our parish commit-

ted to serving God and our parish family as Knights. They pledged to make the Good News of Christ more visible in our faith commu-nity through the witness of their lives. During this Christmas season, the Knights helped to provide food baskets to the needy in our area. Their commitment inspires us.

In November, we started a new Outreach Ministry, which aims to care for parishioners, especially those who are absent from the com-munity, as well as make our visitors feel welcome. This new ministry strives to reach out to and welcome back our brothers and sisters who may have felt left out, to reconnect them with Christ and our parish community. Their intentional discipleship is what the Church needs today. We are very proud of their endeavors.

The room where the AA group normally meets received a much-needed remodeling. This major project was financed by individuals from the AA group.

A generous donor purchased the new tabernacle now installed in our church with a new stand from another parishioner. The new tabernacle highlights the role of Christ as the center of our lives and our faith.

A new Lighthouse Media kiosk, which is in the vestibule at Holy Trinity, was made possible through the generosity of Trish Freitag. The new kiosk contains inspirational spiritual resources for anyone who is looking for ways to grow in their faith and spiritual life. It will always be restocked with new resources. I encourage everyone to stop by regularly and see what is available.

We thank the good Lord for his graces and blessings in our parish in 2019, and we ask the guidance of the Holy Spirit in 2020. May the peace, joy and glad tidings from the birth of Christ always find a home in your heart. I wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a Holy, Happy and Healthy New Year.

Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God It is very appropriate that as people of faith, we begin the new year with the Feast of Mary, the Mother of God. In the year 431, the Council of Ephesus declared Mary the Mother of God to defend the unity of Christ’s person and to reject any teach-ing that in Christ there were two different persons, one divine and the other a merely human person born of Mary. She is the Mother of God by humanly conceiving the Son of God, Jesus Christ, in her womb. As such, all of us who share in the life of Christ, are beneficiaries of the spiritual motherhood of Mary.

The third Mass of Christmas reflects the role of Mary in the Redemption, so her role has always been connected with the Christmas Mystery. Later from the 5th century to the 7th century, the feast was transferred to the Octave Day of Christmas, January 1. Prior to the time that this feast occurred on January 1, New Year’s Day was observed as a day of prayer to offset pagan practices, since there were many riotous pagan celebrations.

The solemnity celebrates the part played by Mary in the Mystery of Salvation, exalts the singular dignity that this Mystery brings to the holy Mother, renews adoration to the newborn Prince of Peace, and implores from God, through Mary’s intercession, the supreme gift of peace.

Catechetical Nuggets

Evangelization: My Role as a Parishioner Although we often joke about “Chreasters” (people who only attend Mass on Christmas and Easter), the truth is that Advent is a time where we see the return of people who have fallen away from the faith, or perhaps never really had a strong relationship with the Lord in the first place. In order to capture the people who come through our doors this Christmas, we all need to work together — from staff to parishioners — to create a welcoming environment.

What It Means to Be Hospitable If we want to create a truly welcoming environment, we need to understand that this isn’t just a job for the ushers. As parishioners, we need to come to Mass prepared to smile at newcomers, direct people to where the bathroom or children’s room is located if asked, slide down the pew to make room for everyone, hand newcomers a missal and show them how to find the hymns and the order of Mass.

We can’t just wait for people to show up. Advent is the perfect time to invite family, friends, and neighbors to Mass and any events taking place that might interest them. Our loved ones will always respect our values.

Gift Giving A gift for Christmas and birthday? Tell your children and grandchildren that the Christmas/birthday gift you want from them is that they go to Mass with you.

Service with a Smile It can be easy for all of us to fall into a routine, especially when you’ve been in a volunteer role for many years. Instead of just the usual “greet and smile,” go the extra mile. Introduce yourself to unfamiliar faces, give a small tour to newcomers, and get to know them by asking where they’re from.

As a visitor, it can be intimidating to walk into a new parish for the first time. That’s why a smile and some help on finding their way around can make a big difference to the overall worship experience. We come to Mass, of course, to receive the Eucharist. But in addition to that, many come to Mass because they are hurting and in need of Christ’s love and compassion. As parishioners, we need to be there to help navigate their relationship to God.

The Story of the Holy Innocents Herod “the Great,” king of Judea, was unpopular with his people because of his connections with the Romans and his religious indifference. Hence he was insecure and fearful of any threat to his throne. He was a master politician and a tyrant capable of extreme brutality. He killed his wife, his brother, and his sister’s two husbands, to name only a few.

Matthew 2:1-18 tells this story: Herod was “greatly troubled” when astrologers from the east came asking the whereabouts of “the newborn king of the Jews,” whose star they had seen. They were told that the Jewish Scriptures named Bethlehem as the place where the Messiah would be born. Herod cunningly told them to report back to him so that he could also “do him homage.” They found Jesus, offered him their gifts, and warned by an angel, avoided Herod on their way home. Jesus escaped to Egypt.

Herod became furious and “ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under.” The horror of the massacre and the devastation of the mothers and fathers led Matthew to quote Jeremiah: “A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children…” (Matthew 2:18). Rachel was the wife of Jacob (Israel). She is pictured as weeping at the place where the Israelites were herded together by the conquering Assyrians for their march into captivity.

Reflection The Holy Innocents are few in comparison to the genocide and abortion of our day. But even if there had been only one, we recognize the greatest treasure God put on the earth—a human person, destined for eternity, and graced by Jesus’ death and resurrection.

The Holy Innocents are the Patron Saints of: Babies
