Parish Priest’s Corner Thirst for Living Water

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

The discovery of water anywhere in the world or in any planet shows a sign of life. Water is one of the necessities of life. Without it we cannot survive. Today’s first reading (Exodus 17:3-7) brings to light the weariness and complaint of the Israelites against Moses and God as they yearn for water to drink. Despite their sin of despair, their thirst was quenched by God through the natural waters from the rock at Massah and Meribah. However, the Israelites were thirsty again.

The Gospel (John 4:5-42) presents Christ’s encounter with the Samaritan woman, an encounter which indicates that Jesus is the well/source of the living water that will forever quench all thirsts. The Gospel puts it this way: “whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14).

This Sunday is when the first scrutiny for catechumens (those preparing to be baptized at Easter) takes place. The cat-echumens yearn for the Living Water that quenches all thirsts. Today’s scriptures show the catechumens how their thirst will be quenched. For in these passages they meet the Lord as “the Rock from which water flowed forth in the desert” (Exodus 17:3-7), and they draw near to Christ, who is “Living Water for those who believe in him” (John 4:5-42). The Rite of Scrutiny succinctly captures this in its prayer when it says: “God of power, you sent your Son to be our Savior. Grant that these catechumens who, like the woman of Samaria, thirst for living water, may turn to the Lord as they hear his word and acknowledge the sins and weaknesses that weigh them down.”

On this Sunday, the catechumens and all of us are called to review our lives before Christ just like the Samaritan woman did, and lay bare before God whatever faults or hidden wounds might prevent us from drinking from the well of living water. Our parish Lenten Penance service is this Wednesday at 6:30 pm. Come and prepare your heart so that you are ready to drink from the wellspring of Living Water, Jesus Christ Our Savior.

May our loving God extend his mercy and forgiveness to us all. --Fr. Anthony Ahamefule Parish Priest

Easter Will Come

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4

I have a friend, who becomes downhearted when December arrives – each year. With so much to celebrate – the birth of Jesus – I often wondered why? Over time she revealed that she lost her brother to cancer, whom she was very close to – in December many years ago. Ever since, the sadness associated with that death, comes to the surface during that month.

Maybe we all can relate to those feelings when we think of those who have passed away, those that we love. We miss them and there is a deep ache in our heart when we think of them. During certain months or days of the year, we become much more aware of the loss. For me, the month of March is a difficult one.

My mother died when I was 9 years old, shortly before Easter. Since then, other friends have died during the month of March. In John 11:35, Scripture reveals, “Jesus wept.” He too grieved the death of his friend Lazarus. These 2 words, “Jesus wept” give us a very special glimpse into the heart of Jesus. Like us, in His humanity, He wept and mourned - even while knowing that His own death and resurrection were approaching - opening up the way for not only Lazarus, but all of mankind to live eternally with Him.

As we remember those who have died - we have available to us - great comfort in Christ. By his death and resurrection, He accomplished complete victory over sin and death. This is where our hope lies. One day, there will be no more sorrow, no more sin and no more death.

This is why Easter is so glorious. The Resurrection of our Lord! This is our comfort. This is our joy. This is why we march on. Easter Will Come…... Praise be to God!
