Parish Priest’s Corner Compete Well For the Faith

Dear friends in Christ, One of the blessings we have in our faith is the presence of so great cloud of witnesses, the saints, that inspire us every day. Dur-ing this time of the year, we celebrate many saints that vividly illustrate how universal the Church really is: Bohemian ruler, Wenceslaus, and Filipino husband and father, Lawrence Ruiz, and his martyred companions from Japan (both on September 28) … great biblical scholar, Jerome (September 30) … the cloistered missionary-at-heart, Thérèse of Liseux (October 1) … Indiana foundress, Theodora Guerin (October 3) … beloved Francis of Assisi (October 4) … Louisiana pastor and missionary, Francis Seelos (October 5) … Carthusian founder, Bruno (October 6). These days remind us that holiness isn’t confined to one way of life, gender, or historical period. St. Paul, in today’s second reading, was urging his young disciple Timothy to “pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, pa-tience, and gentleness. Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses (1 Tim 6:11-12).” We know that Paul was reminding his young coworker that his position within the Church demanded total dedication to God and a faithful witness to Christ. Just like Timothy, each of us has a part to play in the mission of the Church. We have a vocation. We see this vocation lived out in the lives of the saints we celebrate in these days. Because of this, we understand that Paul’s words to Timothy are also ad-dressed to each one of us: we must seek those things that are of God and “compete well for the faith.” This means that we are called to persevere in living out our individual, unique vocation of service to God and to one another. This probably won’t mean we will be martyred like Wenceslaus and Lawrence Ruiz or be called to a cloistered life like Thérèse or Bruno, but it does mean that we have to be willing to go outside of ourselves and live lives of service and sacrifice. Today's Gospel — the Parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man — offers us an insight into what this sacrifice and service mean. Competing “well for the faith” — living our call to be disciples, to manifest the presence of Christ in the world — doesn’t allow for selfish ambition, apathy, complacency, or indifference to the plight of others. We do not need the saints to rise from the dead to tell us what to do and how to help others. If we do not pay attention to the Scriptures and learn from the example of the saints' lives, we will not be impressed by the appearance of someone from the dead. As we come to the table of the Eucharist, we ask Jesus Christ to open our eyes of faith to believe in the mission he has given each of us and to fill our hearts with a desire to carry it out. ~ Fr. The 10th Commandment inspires us to reject jealousy, selfishness, or greed in every form, and to love and give extravagantly. Generosity of time, talent, and treasure is a response to the love of Christ which we have received, a love which holds nothing back and keeps no good thing from us.

St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face - October 1

At the age of 14, on Christmas Eve in 1886, Therese had a conversion that transformed her life. From then on, her powerful energy and sensitive spirit were turned toward love, instead of keeping herself happy. At 15, she entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux to give her whole life to God. She took the religious name Sister Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. Living a hidden, simple life of prayer, she was gifted with great intimacy with God. Through sickness and dark nights of doubt and fear, she remained faithful to God, rooted in His merciful love. After a long struggle with tuber-culosis, she died on September 30, 1897, at the age of 24. Her last words were the story of her life: "My God, I love You!"

The world came to know Therese through her autobiography, "Story of a Soul". She described her life as a "little way of spiritual childhood." She lived each day with an unshakable confidence in God's love. "What matters in life," she wrote, "is not great deeds, but great love." Therese lived and taught a spirituality of attending to everyone and everything well and with love. She believed that just as a child becomes enamored with what is before her, we should also have a childlike focus and totally attentive love. Therese's spirituality is of doing the ordinary, with extraordinary love.

"My mission - to make God loved - will begin after my death," she said. "I will spend my heaven doing good on earth. I will let fall a shower of roses." Roses have been described and experienced as Saint Therese's signature. Countless millions have been touched by her intercession and imitate her "little way." She has been acclaimed "the greatest saint of modern times." In 1997, Pope John Paul II declared St. Therese a Doctor of the Church - the only Doctor of his pontificate - in tribute to the powerful way her spirituality has influenced people all over the world. As an RCIA sponsor, my

Catholic faith of 30+ years was enlivened. I learned new things, was strengthened in

what I already knew, and experienced the joy of

celebrating the beautiful Rites of Initiation.

- RCIA Sponsor

Through RCIA I have come to understand and be face-to-face with

Christ through Eucharistic Adoration. I can feel Him staring back into my eyes

and into my heart. It is an experience and a feeling like no other, where I lose track of time and of the world around me. I am

simply too busy adoring Him, speaking with Him, and feeling Him there with me. It's a state of peace, prayer, and presence

that can't be described or compared to anything else. The RCIA process has and is

teaching me this.

- RCIA Participant

This year we will embark on an exploration of the Catholic faith. RCIA is a process where some people are deciding if they are called into the Catholic

Church; others have been Catholic all their lives and are now interested in discovering what this really means. Together we witness to the fact that our

search for God is a lifelong journey, a journey on which we make the most progress when we walk it with others and with intention.

What is RCIA?

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or RCIA, is a series of classes that present an adult exploration of the Catholic faith. RCIA is a chance for people to learn the basics of what it means to be Catholic, to ask their burning questions, and to seek ways to more fully open their lives to Jesus Christ. RCIA is primarily for adults considering becoming Catholic and for Catholics who were never confirmed. RCIA prepares men and women to make a conscious choice whether or not they want to receive the sacraments of initiation offered by the Catholic Church (Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation). At Holy Trinity we offer opportuni-ties for others to join in this process. We do this in recognition that faith is a lifelong journey, and that many people who have been Catholic their entire lives are now ready to ask new questions as adults.

What is a time commitment for RCIA? The RCIA group meets every Wednesday 6:15-7:15 pm, September 25, 2019, to May 1, 2020. This is the pri-mary time commitment, and there may be other commitments depending on what part of the process you’re going through. We recognize that many people have work and family schedules that won’t allow them to be at every meeting. That said, it’s best if you can be at most meetings because each lesson builds on earlier lessons. If you have to miss an evening, well provide ways for you to catch up.

What if I’m not sure I want to become Catholic or be Confirmed? Not a problem! In fact, we’re assuming that this is the case. Our RCIA is structured in a way that invites you to make small commitments until you’re sure you want to proceed. The initial meetings are designed to an-swer some basic questions and give you a feel for what the journey will be like. After the first few classes, we’ll explore the core Christian message while beginning to answer your most burning questions. Around December, we invite you to begin to decide where you’d like this process to take you.

If I’m already a confirmed Catholic, is RCIA right for me? Many of us stopped learning about our Catholic faith when we received the Sacrament of Confirmation in our early teens. It’s not uncommon for us to realize as adults that we want to know more about our faith, and to wrestle with some of the more difficult questions we have. RCIA is an opportunity for you to really explore your faith. It is also a chance to see your faith through the eyes of people exploring it for the first time. Together we’ll help each other grow closer to Jesus Christ.

Is RCIA appropriate for children too? RCIA (adapted for older children) is provided, depending on individual circumstances, through the Chil-dren’s Faith Formation or Youth Ministry. Contact the office for more information.

I still have questions. Who can I talk to? Just contact Father Anthony ([email protected]).
