Exodus 17:3-7

The people of Israel are on the way to the promised land, making their way through the wilderness. They are without food and without water. God provides them with the manna-bread from heaven in the passage immediately before ours. Without food we ache and are weakened. Without water we die. We can go a long time without food, but without water we cannot exist at all. The Hebrew people are now without water in the desert, they are about to die. They know this and they are complaining to Moses. They need water above everything else. Moses knows that the quarrel of the Hebrews is with God directly, and he takes their quarrel to God, as a prophet does. There is no rebuke or reprimand from God. Instead, God provides them with water through Moses, but notice those wonderful words: “I will be standing there in front of you on the rock.” They need water, yes, but God is there. The Lord God “is in their midst,” the source of their vitality, their life. God is the water of Israel. The French mystic, Simone Weil, once said that “The workers need poetry more than bread.” Perhaps we need God’s water-life more than physical life. Those who seek baptism at Easter are looking for the life-giving water, newly given by God. This is the water that gives the very life that God is. God is the water of the new Israel, the Church.

Charismatic Women's Retreat:

"Refreshment of the Holy Spirit" will be the theme for this deeply spiritual weekend.

Date: April 13-15, Friday through Sunday Place: St. Rita’s Retreat Center, Gold Hill, Oregon.

Time: Friday between 4 and 6 pm for registration, dinner at 6 pm. Retreat ends around 1 pm Sunday.

From the Desk of Father George Kuforiji The Sign Of The Cross, Part One On every Ash Wednesday, we as Catholics are supposed to be signed with the sign of the cross with ashes on our foreheads. One may wonder, what is the meaning of the sign of the cross, and what is the history behind it? The sign of the cross that Catholics make before prayer or any other activity is not meant to be a superstitious act, but an outward profession of faith.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “The Christian begins his day, his prayers, and his activities with the Sign of the Cross: ‘in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.’ The baptized person dedicates the day to the glory of God and calls on the Savior’s grace which lets him act in the Spirit as a child of the Father. The sign of the cross strengthens us in temptations and difficulties” (2157).

The sign of the cross is a simple gesture that has ancient and biblical roots. It is believed that this ancient tradition of marking one’s body with the cross was inspired by a passage in the book of Ezekiel where it says, “And the Lord said to him, ‘Go through the city, through Jerusalem, and put a mark upon the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations that are committed in it’” (Ezekiel 9:4).

As Catholics, the cross is part of the epicenter of what Catholics believe and crossing ourselves reminds us of the price Jesus paid for our sins. It is both a profession of faith and a simple prayer that has such great power. According to Saint John Chrysostom, “Wherever [demons] see the sign of the cross, they fly away, dreading it as a staff that they are beaten with.”

For Christians or Catholics, the sign of the cross calls to mind that profound sacrifice of Jesus 2,000 years ago and ac-tively calls for His aid to help us in our need. It is an acknowledgement of what happened on Calvary. According to writings that date back to the 3rd century, Christians have been making the sign of the cross over their bodies from the very beginning.

Christian apologist Tertullian (160-225 AD) wrote, “We Christians wear out our foreheads with the sign of the cross.” He then added, “In all our travels and movements, in all our coming in and going out, in putting on our shoes, at the bath, at the table, in lighting our candles, in lying down, in sitting down, whatever employment occupies us, we mark our foreheads with the sign of the cross.”

I came across this story about a man in a Siberian work camp in a book “The Sign of the Cross” written by Bert Ghezzi. Alexander Solzhenitsyn had lost hope and given up on life. In hunger and poor health due to hard labor and harsh weather, he was ready to die at the hands of guards who would beat him to death with the work shovel he had dropped.

As he sat on a bench waiting for a merciless beating from the guards, he heard approaching footsteps and braced him-self for a command from a guard telling him to get back to work. On his refusal to compile, he would have received a “quick bloody death” instead of a “slow death in a bleak empty future.”

On looking up at the figure in front of him, instead of a guard, he saw a gaunt looking, elderly prisoner who bent down and with a stick, scratched the sign of the cross in the dirt. On reflection, suddenly, a ray of light penetrated his soul and he realized that he did not have to face “the evil of the gulag and the Soviets on his own diminished strength. With the power of the cross, he could withstand the evil of not one but a thousand Soviet empires.”

He got off the bench. Though the story did not say so, he most certainly made the sign of the cross on his body before going back to work.

The story of this man gives us an example of the power behind the sign of the cross. As Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, who lived in the 4th century, noted in his Catechetical Lectures, “Let us then not be ashamed to confess the Crucified. Be the cross our seal, made with boldness by our fingers on our brow and in everything; over the bread we eat and the cups we drink, in our comings and in our goings out; before our sleep, when we lie down and when we awake; when we are traveling, and when we are at rest.”
