Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

I appeal to you today to give generously to the Annual Di-ocesan Collection for The Catholic University of Americain Washington, D.C. Catholic University is the national uni-versity of the Catholic Church and the only higher educa-tion institution founded by the U.S. bishops in 1887 andchartered by the Vatican. The Catholic University of Amer-ica educates clergy, religious and young lay men andwomen from every geographical region of the UnitedStates. In this sense, The Catholic University of Americabelongs to all of us in the Church, regardless of where welive.

The financial sacrifices required of Catholic parents todayto provide a truly Catholic college education are enormous. All of the funds received through the collection help defraythese costs in the form of financial aid. Your contributionsdirectly benefit students from all over the United States, including our own Diocese, by funding scholarships forthose who would not otherwise be able to attend. More than1,500 undergraduate students who attended CUA last yeardirectly benefited from the generous support of the NationalCollection for Catholic University. Grounded in the phi-losophy of the rich Catholic intellectual tradition, studentswho attend Catholic colleges and universities are well pre-pared for success in life and ready to make a difference intoday's world.

On Saturday and Sunday, September 24th and 25th, the an-nual collection for The Catholic University of America andother Catholic higher educational needs will be taken up inour diocese. I encourage you to join me in supporting thismost worthwhile educational initiative. Again, I am gratefulfor your continual generosity.

Your servant inChrist,

Dear Brothers and Sister of Holy Trinity Parish:

I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation forthe wonderful “Retirement Party” last Sunday. (Even thoughI won’t be retiring for a few mote months, last Sunday wasabout the only free time in the parish’s fall schedule)

I was deeply moved by the number of people who cameto share the afternoon. I would never have imagined in thisday and age so many people would take the time and trou-ble to show up. You all helped create a very special mem-ory for me. The warmth and affection so many of you ex-pressed will keep me going for a long time to come.

I would especially like to thank all those who worked sohard behind the scenes to help bring the occasion about. The number of people it took to attend to an endless list ofdetails is unbelievable. I am deeply grateful for all the effortthey expended on my behalf.

As I quoted from The Brothers Karamazov, “...let usagree that we shall never forget one another. And whateverhappens, remember how good it felt when we were all heretogether, united by a good and decent feeling, which madeus all better people than we would otherwise have been….”

God blessyou…..

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar

Despite all our time saving gadgets, we still have lessleisure and family time. To solve this we created the Mythof Quality Time. Don’t be fooled: Quality Time is QuantityTime. Jesus counsels us today, we “cannot serve two mas-ters” and expect to be happy. Dedicate time to your family. No one in their final hours regretted not spending moretime at work.

Reflections on today’s Scriptures

Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“And the master commended that dishonest steward foracting prudently.” It's important to pay attention to the de-tails of the parable Jesus tells in today’s Gospel. At firstglance, it might seem as if Jesus is encouraging us to bedishonest. But in fact, it’s just the opposite. The steward inthis tale was reported to his master “for squandering hisproperty.” In other words, the steward was not being re-sponsible with what he was in charge of. And the masterwas ready to fire him on account of it. But then, the stewardhad a change of heart. (This isn't so hard to comprehend--sometimes it takes a real threat for us to realize we need tochange our ways, doesn't it?) So the steward went to thepeople from whom he had previously collected money to“make friends” with them. How? By reducing their debts.

This might seem to be dishonest yet again, but we needto bear in mind that in the end, the master was pleased withthe steward’s behavior. So this debt reduction must nothave affected the master's pocketbook. Rather, it seemsprobable that the steward had originally hiked up what thedebtors owed the master and put the extra cash in his ownpocket. This was the sort of extortion that was common inthose days, among tax collectors for example. Now, whenthe steward was about to lose his position, he thought itwise to go back and return that “dishonest wealth” to thefolks who had lost it, and gain some sympathy in the proc-ess. So, in the end, the steward was making up for his previ-ous cheating behavior by doing something RIGHT andsmart. It's this honest behavior that will enable him to takehis place in “eternal dwellings.” And surely our honest be-havior will have the same effect.
