LENT SUNDAY THREE:JESUS MEETS THE WOMAN AT THE WELL

Last Sunday, we reflected on our Gospel of the Trans-figuration of Jesus by using the famous painting of thisGospel event by the artist Raphael. This week, we are pre-sented with another very human and yet very dramatic Gos-pel as Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. Aneveryday and rather mundane task of fetching water be-comes, for the woman, a life-transforming encounter as shemeets Jesus and enters into a conversation with him. Ulti-mately, that conversation becomes also a conversion forher: she drinks from the water of eternal life. The Frenchartist Nicolas Colombel (1644-1717) was very taken withthis Gospel story and so he painted a beautiful picture of theencounter between Jesus and the woman). Colombel wantsthose who look at his painting not just to see a picture ofthis encounter, but to be transported into it. When this hap-pens, we can better understand all that is going on and solearn from the event and apply it to our own lives.

So, what can we notice in his painting…? First of all, wenotice the realism. The city can be seen in the distance asthe encounter would have taken place outside the town atthe well of Jacob. Also; notice how there are virtually noshadows and the scene is brightly lit. This is because thewoman came to the well at noon, in the heat of the day, since no one else would be there. Why was this? She wentto the well at this time because she was despised andshunned by the townspeople as a woman of bad repute.(Some artists make this point by showing the woman asscantily dressed, but Colombel does this by showing her asnot covering her hair: a “good” woman would always gooutside with her hair covered and this would have been avery strict custom at the time of Jesus). Some commentatorsalso think that all the rope gathered in her hand (presumably

to let the bucket down into the deep well) is also a symbolof the entangled life that she had lead up to this point.

We can also see the animated conversation between theJesus and the woman in their gestures and in the fluidmovement of their bodies. We can easily see how Jesusreaches out towards the woman and how animated his faceseems to be. It is a sure sign of his thirst: not for water(although he would have been hot and thirsty in the noon-day heat), but rather his thirst for the woman’s soul and forher conversion to a new life. So, Jesus gently but surelymoves towards the woman to encourage her and to wel-come her, just as the Lord makes the first move towards usas he thirsts for our soul and life too.

By contrast to this moving and tranquil scene, we cansee in the distance on the right hand side of the picture, theflustered disciples hurrying towards Jesus, no doubt won-dering what on earth he is doing talking with this person ofill-repute. Sometimes, judgments about others, even if well-meaning, can actually be a barrier or a hindrance to God’slove and mercy working in a situation or in a person. In this our third week of our journey of Lent together, let usbe open to Jesus’s love and thirst in our life. Let us engagein conversation (prayer) with him, just as the woman at thewell did and, like her, welcome his healing presence intoour lives so that our conversation with Jesus turns into ourconversion.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Next weekend our diocese will be taking up The CatholicRelief Services Collection (CRSC). By participating in thiscollection, you are responding to Jesus in disguise in someof the most marginalized communities in our world. TheCRSC provides services for immigrants, humanitarian aidin the wake of natural disasters, refuge for the displaced, and advocacy for peace and justice around the world. Let usjoin together in this collection to support those sufferingand on the margins of society.

For example, in Niger, changes in climate in westernAfrica are adversely affecting poor and rural farmers. Nomatter how hard these farmers work, droughts are shorten-ing the rainy season, leaving harvests too small to supportfamilies and communities. Your support of the CRSC ishelping connect businesses that provide drought-resistantseeds to these communities. These new relationships areproviding hope to these communities for a sustainable fu-ture.

Your support of this collection makes a difference for somany around the world. Please prayerfully consider howyou can support the collection this year. If you want to learnmore about the collection and the people who benefit, please visit www.usccb.org/catholic-relief.

Please answer the knock of Jesus in disguise, and begenerous to The Catholic Relief Services Collection. Yoursupport truly makes a difference.

Faithfully yours in Christ,

Edward B. ScharfenbergerBishop of Albany

Our children are like the Samaritan woman in today’s Gospel. They need more than material things. They need the ‘living wa-ter” only the adults can give. It will teach them how to make de-cisions, take responsibility, respect themselves and others andlive their commitments. With this “living water” they will “neverthirst.”

THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 19, 2017

Reflections on today’s Scriptures

The Third Sunday of Lent

“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true wor-shippers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth.” Are wetrue worshippers? Do we praise and honor God the Fatherin the way Jesus described to the Samaritan woman at thewell?

It seems that this woman was caught up in logisticsabout WHERE to worship more than HOW to worship. Herpeople worshiped in one place, the Jews in another. Shewas puzzled by this and, even though she could see thatJesus was a prophet, she challenged him because shethought perhaps he wasn't a true worshipper of God. TheLord’s response to her was to shift the focus away from aparticular physical location for honoring God. In essence,he told her that what mattered was that we worship God bybeing filled with his Spirit, “the Spirit of truth, [who] willguide you to all truth,” as Jesus will say later in John’s Gos-pel (16:13). This woman, whose life was marked by such asad string of broken relationships, had been missing thepoint.

Worshipping God means more than merely practic-ing a community ritual or frequenting a sacred site. If wedon’t come to truly know God by welcoming his Spirit intoour hearts, then our worship will be empty and our liveswill always be missing something. The deep fulfillment thatis meant to come from following the Lord is a fruit of beingfilled with his Spirit. Without drinking fully of this ‘livingwater’ that is available to all of us through the waters ofbaptism, we will always be seeking something more, likethis poor woman. Instead, may we be true worshippers, whodrink with satisfaction from the Lord's own ‘spring of waterwelling up to eternal life.’

Fernando’s storyFernando dreams of becoming a businessman. He also

dreams of a better future for his family, and this motivateshim to sell cookbooks on San Salvador’s buses. It’s danger-ous work for $10 a day—gangs frequently stop and harassdrivers and passengers—but he keeps going, determined toachieve his dreams.

It was his dreams that led him to YouthBuild, a six-month, CRS-sponsored program that trains young people inbusiness. There, he found a positive community to help himpursue his passion, despite the challenges of life in El Sal-vador. “When I tell my classmates that I want to do some-thing, they tell me to try it and to not hold back.”

Training for six months with YouthBuild wasn’t easyon Fernando or his family. Without his wife to support himand care for their two young daughters, the early morningsand long days might have been impossible. “YouthBuild isa family because families help you realize your dreams,”Fernando says. It’s a fact he knows well.

Fernando is putting his newfound skills to work. Aftergraduating from YouthBuild in 2016, he took part in a se-ries of entrepreneur workshops organized by CRS and iscurrently working on a new business plan. He is also a partof the YouthBuild network of graduates, youth leaders whomentor other young people and look for new opportunitiesfor employment and growth.

“We have a saying,” says Fernando. “Once a Youth-Builder, always a YouthBuilder.”

Through your Lenten contributions to Operation RiceBowl, you will be helping an untold number of strugglingpeople like Fernando and his family find a better way oflife.
