ALL SAINTS AND ALL SOULS 2018

It is hard to believe, but we are now already afew days into the month of November! It is often abusy month as we get ready for the great family eventof Thanksgiving and thoughts also begin to turn toChristmas (and there are already plenty of Christmasthings about, not least in the stores). We began themonth by celebrating the great feast day of All SaintsDay followed by All Souls Day. It is worth spending afew moments reflecting and remembering why we didthis.

We give thanks and honor to all those specialdisciples who indeed heard the Lord’s call and thenbravely followed him. The feast day of All Saints com-memorates the many people who did this, but who arenot necessarily and officially recognized as saints bythe Church. We can also remember that, as Peter Kreeftputs it: “the saints are not freaks or exceptions. Theyare the standard operating model for human beings. Infact, in the biblical sense of the word, all believers aresaints. All are holy…for they bear the image of God.Saints are not the opposite of sinners. There are no op-posites of sinners in this world. There are only savedsinners and unsaved sinners. Thus “holy” does notmean "sinless" but rather "set-apart:" called out of theworld to the destiny of eternal ecstasy with God.”

The feast day of All Saints is a powerful re-minder of how we can also be inspired by the lives ofthe saints. We too have the same call and the same in-vitation and the Lord offers us the same help so that wecan follow him. So, we are asked not just to admire thesaints, but also to imitate them. November then is agreat month to pick a saint each day and to read abouttheir life so that we can imitate their example and sothat we too can use well the gift of discipleship that wehave received from the Lord. We too can be brave!

November is also, of course, the month of“Holy Souls”: when we traditionally think of all ourfamily, friends and benefactors who have gone beforeus. To mark this time, each year we have a specialMass on All Souls’ Day at 7.00 pm where we remem-bered all our departed brothers and sisters, especiallythose who have died in the last year and who have aparticular connection with our parish. A reminder toothat we will also be offering Mass each day during themonth for those on our memorial list (taken from theAll Souls envelopes that have been handed in) and forthose in our Book of Remembrance (this can be foundin front of the ambo/lectern on the sanctuary).

The tradition of praying for all our loved oneswho have died is, of course, very ancient and it can be

found in almost all cultures and places over millennia. The specific choice of November as the month for aparticular remembering is also ancient: around a thou-sand years old or more. It can be a difficult time as wethink of those who have had such an influence on ourlives but who are no longer physically present with us:we can sorely miss them. So, perhaps we can share afew thoughts on why we have this special season andhow it can help us in our everyday life and to encour-age us to growth in faith.

There are many layers, both emotional andspiritual, to our annual remembrance of those who havedied. We certainly celebrate our faith in life and in thelife to come; in Jesus who is “the resurrection and thelife” (John 11: 25). We can celebrate Jesus’ victoryover sin and death and the promise and hope of our lifein heaven along with those who have gone before us.This is why St. Paul says “do not grieve as the othersdo” (1 Thess. 4: 13). He does not say that we shouldnot grieve at all: that would just be ridiculous. Rather,we should not grieve as though we have no hope orfaith in the life to come.

We also celebrate life: the lives of those whohave gone before us and also our own life. This memo-rial season is a time when we realize both how wonder-ful and yet how fragile the gift of life is and how it isindeed a gift. God calls each one of us to use the gift oflife that we have been given well: in love of God and ofour neighbor, that is, to be His disciples. What happensto us in the life to come is determined by what happensin this life (as is so strongly put in Jesus’ words aboutjudgment in Matthew 25: 31-46). As one spiritualwriter puts it, “our future is now”. St. Ambrose writingall those centuries ago provided us with a great imagewhen he wrote: “the Lord asks us to sacrifice presentinterests for the sake of eternal interests…in this waywe purchase eternity with the coin of time.” Anotherimage that can be helpful is that of our Christian life asa journey. This journey began in our birth and then ourbaptism and it will be completed when our life’s jour-ney is ended. So, a fundamental question is: how welldid we journey…?

This time of the year can be a real encourage-ment for us to discern what God is asking of us and sobravely to live our lives in His service to our families, our friends, our parish community and to those in need.We can be inspired and guided by the saints and by allthose special people we have known who have gonebefore us: family, friends, guides and mentors.

Story of the Dedication ofSt. John Lateran

Most Catholics think of St. Peter’sas the pope’s main church, but they are wrong. St.John Lateran is the pope’s church, the cathedral ofthe Diocese of Rome where the Bishop of Rome pre-sides.

The first basilica on the site suffered fire, earthquake, and the ravages of war, but the Lateran remained thechurch where popes were consecrated.

Pope Innocent X commissioned the present structurein 1646. The Lateran’s towering facade is crownedwith 15 colossal statues of Christ, John the Baptist,John the Evangelist, and 12 doctors of the Church.Beneath its high altar rest the remains of the smallwooden table on which tradition holds Saint Peterhimself celebrated Mass.
