Both the first reading and the Gospel today tells stories
of healing from leprosy, a cruel and debilitating disease
that was the scourge of the ancient world. It was thought to
be a punishment from God for one’s sins. To be stricken
with leprosy was not only a death sentence, but it meant
alienation from family and friends. A terrible fate.
Naaman and the lepers were cured of their leprosy, but
also restored to right relationship to God and to the com-
munity. The more important healing was not of the body,
but of the soul to God and to others.
Sin is a sickness that is far more serious an deadly than
any bodily affliction. And it is from sin that God wishes to
deliver us, and why he sent his son to healing us and re-
store us. Jesus is a doctor of souls, not of the body. And by
allowing us to suffer sickness and diseases of the body,
God often shows us how much we need his grace. Would
the lepers from today’s readings have come back to God
without first being afflicted with leprosy?
There is a reason that God allows so much pain, sick-
ness, suffering and death in the world. God can seem un-
just, but what he wants more than anything else is our faith
and our love, and he uses sickness, which is one of the con-
sequences of the world’s sin, to show us his greatness.
We so often ask God to restore our bodily health. But
what he wants even more is to restore our spiritual health.
And God knows what is best for us. — Fr. Patrick

Parent’s Prayer When Children Are Leaving Home
Gracious God,
You blessed me with the gift of this child and
entrusted me with his/her care.
Now he/she leaves this home and
begins a new life apart from me.
Surround him/her with good people,
and watch over him/her each day.
Let him/her know that I will always be near
whenever he/she may need me.
Heal any hurts we may harbor with on another,
and forgive our failings as we learn
to be in a new kind of relationship with each other.
And when the sight of his/her empty room pierces
my heart with sadness,
may I find comfort in knowing that
my child is your child too,
filled with grace and sheltered by your love.
Amen.

Stewardship
28th Sunday In Ordinary Time October 9, 2016 Page 5
October 9, 2016 —
Twenty-eighth Sunday
in Ordinary Time
Our Gospel Reading from St. Luke relates to how Jesus
healed 10 lepers. However, only one realized the full
sense of his healing and he returned to say “Thank
you.” To that gesture Jesus responds to him, “Stand up
and go; your faith has saved you.” This is another case
where something may have been lost in our transla-
tion.
The last line in its original Greek might also be translat-
ed “Your faith has made you whole,” or “Your faith has
made you well.” In any case, the point is the im-
portance of gratitude to God. How often have we point-
ed out that stewardship is a response in gratitude to
God’s blessings? That ongoing and consistent feeling
of thanks is so important.
Jesus healed 10, but only one was really completely
healed. The other nine were healed physically, but only
the one who felt the gratitude was healed both physi-
cally and spiritually. In that sense he was truly “made
whole” and “saved.”
That is the same salvation that we seek, and the key to
it would seem to be that deep sense of thanksgiving as
part of our lives and how we live them. Bishop John C.
Wester of the Diocese of Salt Lake City opened a re-
cent stewardship conference in his diocese by saying,
“Stewardship is about gratitude — recognizing what
there is to be thankful for. Gratitude is at the heart of
our faith in the Eucharist.”

Service Nights

Respect Life Service, Peace and Justice
Respect Life Month: October is Respect Life
Month, a time when we are especially focused on the life
and dignity of each human person. As Cardinal Dolan states
in his “Respect Life” statement, “God made each of us in his
own image and likeness. He desires to be united with us
forever in a loving relationship. God loves us, treats us with
respect, and asks us to do the same with others. Every per-
son is sacred and must be treated with the dignity they de-
serve.” Although we are called to do so, respecting all hu-
man life can be very challenging, especially when we consid-
er those who have done evil things. But we are called to
value ALL life and are commanded “Thou shalt not kill.”
Capital punishment challenges our belief in the sacredness
of all life as we consider taking a life in retribution. If our
fundamental valuing of life is not sufficient to counter our
desire for execution, here are some thoughts to consider:
Almost all death row defendants cannot afford their own
attorneys, forensic experts, medical testimony.
A case currently before the supreme court involves a
defendant’s own attorney presenting “evidence” that
defendant would repeat violence because he is black.
Death penalty states have higher crime rates than
states that have abolished capital punishment.
For every nine executions one innocent person has
been exonerated
African Americans make up nearly half of all homicide
victims. Yet nearly 80% of executions have been in cas-
es where the victims are white.
Poverty, race, geography have impact on death penalty
determination.
104 countries have abolished the death penalty for all
crimes;
25 countries carried out executions in 2015; The 5 top
executioners in 2015 were China, Iran, Saudi Arabia,
Pakistan and the USA;
“God, who preferred the correction than the death of a sin-
ner, did not desire that a homicide be punished by the ex-
traction of another act of homicide.”

FORMERLY CONJOINED TWINS
START KINDERGARTEN
Rosie and Ruby Formosa were given only a 20%
chance of survival when they were born conjoined and shar-
ing an intestine. Now they are starting kindergarten.
Originally believing the girls shared an amniotic sac,
their mother, Angela Formosa, was sent to King’s Hospital.
She learned there that at 16 weeks gestation, they were
conjoined.
“I was really, really, really scared and really upset be-
cause at that point I was told that there was a high possibil-
ity that the girls wouldn’t survive the pregnancy,” she
told Sky News. “If they did survive the pregnancy, they might
not survive the birth, then they might not survive the sur-
gery. […] I didn’t prepare to bring them home.”
After they were born, doctors had hoped to give them a
few months to become stronger before performing the risky
surgery to separate them, but they discovered a dangerous
intestinal blockage. The surgery would need to be per-
formed immediately and the chance of one or both of them
dying was high. Their parents anxiously waited for good
news during the five-hour operation at London’s Great Or-
mond Street Hospital.
Their parents and doctors are amazed at how far the
girls have come; and while they may need further treatment
in the future, they are doing well and excited to be starting
school.
“When I was pregnant, I didn’t think I’d ever see their
first day at school, so it is really amazing and all, thanks to
GOSH [Great Ormond Street Hospital], really,” said Mrs.
Formosa.

Community Sunday: Thank You! Thank you to all those who participated in our Oct. 2
Community Sunday event to make Cancer Awareness Kits.
We made 110 new kits thanks to the volunteer direction
of Courtney Everard, our Parents’ Group coordinator,
Carol Szopa, one of our Health Ministry Team nurses, and
several of our generous Parish “Sewing Angels.”
Cancer Survival Kits are available in the back of church
and provide great inspiration for those enduring
cancer treatment.
Building an Emergency Kit Food Storage
Decide how you are going to prepare your
food during a power outage. Purchase/store your
food in 3 meal, 1 day units.
Choose your food according to your family’s
needs. If you don’t eat it, don’t buy it. Factors in
food choice: shelf life, nutrition, preference.
Choose foods that will provide energy. Avoid foods
that will make you thirsty. Store your food in a
cool, dry area.
If vacuum sealing or canning, follow sanitary
guidelines. Good foods to consider (approximate
shelf life): ready to eat canned meals (1year), pro-
tein bars/nuts (1 year), dried fruit/fruit bars (6
months), crackers/peanut butter (1 year). Consid-
er dietary constraints when storing food. Always
double check food before eating it. Do not allow
canned goods to freeze!

week we learned how to Stop, Drop

there was a danger of Fire we can
call 911 and get help from the Fire

to do in case of a fire, call a kinder-

Dear Friends in Christ:
Next weekend, Catholics across the country join together
in prayer and support for World Mission Sunday. On this
day, we hold a collection to support the outreach of local
churches through priests, religious, and laity among the
poor and marginalized. Life-changing help is provided to
mission churches in territories covering more than half
the globe.
Of the funds raised by our Archdiocesan community,
91% will go to the Society of the Propagation of the
Faith, an organization that, in addition to establishing
mission churches and religious training, also helps to
build schools, provide social services to the poor, and
facilitate medical treatment for the sick.
The other 9% of the collection will go to benefit the
Catholic Near East Welfare Society, a papal agency dedi-
cated to serving those most in need while bringing the
Gospel to communities in the Middle East, Northeast Af-
rica, India, and Eastern Europe.
Your ongoing support of these organizations is vital to
missionaries serving in over 1,000 dioceses. Your gener-
osity makes it possible for local priests, religious, and
catechists to reach out to communities, families, and chil-
dren in desperate need, bringing the light of Christ to the
darkest of circumstances.
I ask that you join me in celebrating World Mission Sun-
day as we express our prayerful support for the global
Church.
Sincerely yours in Christ and Mary,
