PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE It’s great to be back following my extended leave over the last three terms. Thank you very much to everyone who has so kindly welcomed me back. Your greetings are very much appreciated. I would very much like to publicly thank Miss Deiri, Ms Taylor and our executive team for their great work running our school in my absence, and to all staff for your on-going wonderful hard work. I’d also like to offer a belated welcome to our many new staff who have joined us over the last three terms. I’m sure you are enjoying being part of our great team. Thank you also to our parents who have taken an executive roles in our P&C. I look forward to working with you for the benefit of our students. Finally, congratulations, well done and thank you to our students. You have had a tremendous start to the term, certainly living up to our PBL mantra at being safe, respectful learners.

NAPLAN Our year 3 and year 5 students sat their NAPLAN assessments last week and all went very smoothly, thanks to the excellent preparation and organisation of Ms Taylor and teachers. We now wait for results, due in Term 3.

DEBATING TEAMS Best of luck to our debating teams this week. The Titans will be up against Milperra Public School and the Rookies will debate Hammondville Public School tomorrow. We know you will do us proud.

STAGE 1 EXCURSION Years 1 and 2 had great excursions to the Science Centre and Planetarium in Wollongong last week. This is a terrific venue and all students had a really enjoyable and highly educational time. As usual for our students their behaviour and attitude were excellent and they represented our school with pride. Well done everyone. Please see 2J’s recount in this newsletter.

FUTURE FOCUSED LEARNING We have purchased a lot of furniture recently to better facilitate our Future Focused Learning programs. Every class received a new table which allows for a flexible learning environment for group work, while some classes had a more extensive re-fit. Our aim is to progressively work through re-fitting more furniture in all classes. Our students are loving their new furniture.

P&C ELECTION DAY

Our P&C had a very successful “Bacon, Bake & Book Stall” on Saturday. I’d like to thank everyone involved, the executive for their excellent preparation and management, all volunteers who worked on the day, and everyone who supported the P&C on the day. Our P&C is working very hard to support our school and their efforts are greatly appreciated.

KINDERGARTEN NEWS

Kindergarten has had some big changes this term. Writing groups have started and everyone is trying their

best learn the weekly sight words. All teachers have been delighted with the students’ efforts when attempting

to write a simple sentence.

The Tri-Skills gymnastics program has started on a Friday to complement our Fine and Gross Motor

programs. Students have been learning to follow instruction and be safe in the gymnastics setting. Tina and

Mary (the instructors) have been showing them how to jump, land, roll, balance and other fun gymnastics

moves. Remember to ask your child about this on Friday afternoons.

All Kindergarten classes have also started to work with a Speech Pathologist on Thursdays. We have been

learning to use positional language in a sentence. We have been using this to give and follow instructions.

So far we have worked on in, on, over and under. Miss Annabelle (Speech Pathologist) has used some great

picture books to help us with this. The first week we read ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’, then last week ‘Rosie’s

Walk’. This week we will be looking at ‘Room on the Broom’.

The final exciting news is that Kindergarten has been able to play on the bottom oval. This happens on

Monday, Wednesday and Thursday lunchtimes. Students must be wearing a hat if they want to play in this

area. So please remember to send your child’s hat with them every day (even in winter).

YEAR 2 EXCURSION TO THE SCIENCE CENTRE AND PLANETARIUM IN WOLLONGONG

On Friday 17 May, Year 2 went on an exciting excursion to the Science Centre and Planetarium in

Wollongong. This connects with our science unit ‘Material World’.

The first thing we had to do was to get our badges and mark the roll. After this the seat belted coach took

one hour to get there.

Next, Year 2 had recess in the picnic area. We then entered the Science Centre to experiment with different

activities. Some of the activites were lifting weights using different sized levers, sitting on a see saw, trying

to see how weight and levers work, using 3D blocks to make different shapes and designs and building a

house of bricks using a conveyor belt to move the materials.

Afterwards our group went into the Planetarium and watched a show projected on the domed ceiling. It

taught us about space, the planets in our solar system and their features. We also saw many different

constellations in the sky.

When that was finished we went into the science show and learnt about bubbles and balloons. Year 2 volunteers made a circle to show the molecules of bubbles and how they are formed by stretching the circle of students as far as we could. Kaylee in 2J proved that bubbles can pop easily when you have dry hands but they don't pop when you have soapy hands. There were different shaped bubble wands but the bubbles were all spheres. By now we were hungry. We had our lunch in the picnic area and then it was time to board the bus for home. It was an amazing day! 2J

2019 INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS AND ASSESSMENTS FOR SCHOOLS (ICAS)

The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) is an independent, skills-based

assessment program which rewards and recognises achievement. This year, Holsworthy Public School will

be offering Science, English and Mathematics assessments.

ICAS Assessments are now online, a move that reflects a sector-wide transition to computer-based assessment. This

allows greater accessibility for students and faster delivery of results.

Registration/Permission forms available on school website and Skoolbag, or complete the expression of interest form

below and return it to the school office by Friday 7 June 2019 to request the registration/permission forms to be

sent home for payment.

Registration/permission forms must be returned, with your entry fees (unless paying online) in an envelope to the

a) What is food allergy?

Food allergy is an immune system response to a food protein that the body (mistakenly) believes is harmful. When a food which a person is allergic to is eaten, the immune system releases massive amounts of chemicals, triggering potentially life-threatening symptoms. Currently there is no cure for food allergy, avoidance is the only way to prevent a reaction.

b) What are the signs and symptoms of food allergy?

Food allergic reactions can range from mild to severe, severe being what we call anaphylaxis. Symptoms usually appear within two hours of a person eating a food (even a small amount) they are allergic to.

Mild to moderate allergic reaction

• swelling of the face, lips and eyes

• hives or welts

• tingling mouth

• abdominal pain, vomiting (these are signs of a severe allergic reaction to insects)

Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)

• difficult/noisy breathing

• swelling of the tongue

• swelling/tightness of the throat

• difficulty talking and/or hoarse voice

• wheeze or persistent cough

• persistent dizziness or collapse

• pale and floppy (young children)

c) What foods can cause food allergy?

Any food can trigger an allergic reaction and there are more than 170 foods reported to have caused a severe reaction. However, there are ten foods that cause 90 per cent of reactions, which are:

• peanuts

• treenuts (e.g. almonds, walnuts, cashews)

• egg

• cow’s milk

• sesame

• fish

• shellfish (e.g. oysters, prawns)

• soy

• wheat • lupin

THE PEACE PROJECT

Can you crochet? Or do you have a family member who can crochet?

Calling for volunteers to crochet Peace Poppies for the War Widows’ Guild of

Australia. The Peace Poppies will be donated to guests to wear at Parliament

House, Canberra, during a dinner function in August this year.

Mrs Wilkins, the Defence School Mentor, will collect these poppies and send them on behalf of Holsworthy

Public School to the War Widows’ Guild of Australia. Any donated poppies can be left at the Administration

Office.
