Arts1400 Post Impressionists - Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most famous painters in the history of Western art. His vivid, intensely emotional, and deeply subjective portraits and landscapes would have a profound effect on such diverse artists as Henri Matisse and Francis Bacon. Discover his life-long struggle with mental illness and explore his brand of Post-Impressionism,

influenced by the aesthetics of Impressionism and Japanese art.

Dr. Irina Stotland, Art Historian, AuthorTuesday 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Sep 101 Session $15

1401 Post Impressionists - Paul CezannePaul Cezanne is a central figure in the history of modern

art, a Post-Impressionist, who is also celebrated as the forefather to Cubism. Cezanne’s images transitioned 19th-century art to the radical modernism of the 20th-century. The lecture explores Cezanne’s groundbreaking rejection of the Impressionist spontaneity and his focus on geometry and structure to make “something solid and durable, like the art of museums.”

Dr. Irina Stotland, Art Historian, AuthorThursday 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Sep 191 Session $15

1402 Better Halves: Women Artists in Renaissance and Baroque Europe

Many female artists emerged in Europe between 1500 and 1700 as daughters, wives and sisters of male artists. This

lecture will highlight a number of these women who ended up more famous and more accomplished or at least the equals of their fathers, brothers, and husbands, including Sophonisba Anguissola, Lavinia Fontana, Elisabetta Sirani, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Judith Leyster. Every one of these brave and talented women has a

unique story and more and more of their art works have come to light and been recognized as worthy of being included in our major museums.

Nora Hamerman, Art Historian, AuthorMonday 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM Sep 231 Session $15

1342 Through Monet’s Eyes: An Impressionist Paradise on the Seine

For some 7 years, French Impressionist icon Claude Monet lived and worked at Argenteuil, a suburb of Paris. This presentation will

take you on a journey into this Impressionist paradise that Monet immortalized. Whether the riverside views, sparkling with color and light; or the floral beauty of his private garden; or the endless fields of the nearby countryside. At its heart was his wife and

muse Camille who is the star of countless canvases, culminating in his tribute to her, Woman with a Parasol one of the treasures of the National Gallery of Art collection.

Joan Hart, Art Historian, AuthorThursday 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Oct 31 Session $15

1343 Monet & Giverny: A Personal Vision---Family, Flowers, & Water Lilies

Giverny was the center of the French Impressionist master’s creative world for more than 40 years. This presentation will

explore how Monet’s magical home, which has attracted millions of visitors, transformed his art. Starting with the surrounding countryside, where Monet captured the rich colors of the meadows

and fields, including its haystacks which he would make famous. Portraits of his extensive family of eight children will also be featured, especially his beautiful step-daughter Suzanne, who was his favorite model. Above all, though, was the complex of garden and water lilies pond that took him at least a decade to construct, inspiring Monet to produce some of his most ambitious and beloved works.

Joan Hart, Art Historian, AuthorThursday 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Oct 171 Session $15

1344 From Realism to Symbolism: The Art of Giovanni Segantini

Celebrated towards the end of his life in fin-de siècle Vienna by Gustav Klimt and his Secessionist friends, Giovanni Segantini

(1858-1899) was an important early Modernist painter who began his career in Northern Italy. Born in Trentino, then under Austrian rule, orphaned early, Segantini was taken on by a stepbrother, who put him to work as a photographic assistant, from where

he made the “jump” to Brera, the prestigious art academy of Milan. Later he moved to Switzerland, where he turned to painting Alpine scenery and the harsh conditions of peasant life in remote mountain villages. Inspired by the French Neo-Impressionists, he produced light-filled canvases, presenting his subjects in ways they became symbols of the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. One of his masterpieces, Springtime in the Alps, was commissioned by Jacob Stern (1851-1927), whose father co-founded Levi Strauss & Co. This canvas is now is the collection of the Getty Museum.

1345 Post Impressionists - Odilon RedonConsidered a paragon of Post-Impressionist Symbolism, Odilon

Redon produced enigmatic dream-images in oils and pastels. As a product of 19th century, Redon found his inspiration in both from the developments of modern science and his inner visions. His colorful and expressive works are inhabited by microbial organisms, disembodied eyes, and mythological creatures. Drawing on poetry and music, Redon created a wonderfully bizarre world of personal fantasy and universality, which has a

profound influence on Paul Gauguin and the Surrealists.

General Topics1359 Unusual for Their Time: The First Ladies - 1900-2019

Women have been partners in the development and leadership of our country from the very beginning. American

First Ladies are some of the most powerful unpaid and unelected women in the world. They have been paying it forward since before “pay it forward” was a catch phrase. They didn’t do it because they had to or were expected to. They did it because it was the right thing to do. Much of their efforts and many of their accomplishments have gone unrecognized. This class will show that women are an integral part of the success

of our country and the modern world, the sooner we can all move forward together as one and create a better future for all of us. The class will start with Edith Roosevelt and carries readers right on through to Melania Trump. There is always so much to talk about with these First Ladies, and the stories of my travels are virtually endless.

“American Carnage: The Wars of Donald Trump” is Melvin Goodman’s new book which provides the first assessment of the Trump administration’s damage to American governance and American democracy.  We will examine the Trump administration’s efforts to politicize the military and intelligence communities; the efforts to undermine and degrade essential departments and agencies; and the damage to the government’s role in the

areas of science and regulation.

1363 Grape Expectations: Israel’s Wine Industry – A Geographic and Historical Journey

Just in time for the Fall (and several holidays), embark on a virtual journey that stretches from Roman times to the present

day, from the hills of Galilee to desert greenhouses, and across many countries – from France and Italy to the United States and, of course, Israel. Meet Biblical spies, a convention-defying woman from Talmudic times, and 19th-century socialist ideologues building a nation on the foundations of a healthy grape harvest. Wine is not provided with this lecture, but you may return home

with some suggestions for wines to try, and a healthy dose of fermented inspiration!

1364 The Rise of the New Con ArtistsCon artists have a large role in society, past and present.

“Give them the old Razzle Dazzle,” sing the sly two-timers in the musical ‘Chicago’. “From the Age of Methuselah, everyone loves the Big Bamboozler.” Why is that? In the annals of finance and love, in politics and sports, Bamboozlers  have cut a wide swath. This lecture looks at the lure and lore -- and warning signs for spotting the con artists next door -- or even closer.

Shelby Coffey, Vice Chairman of the Newseum, Former Executive with the LA Times, the Washington Post, and CNNMonday 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Sep 231 Session $15

1365 “American Carnage: The Wars of Donald Trump”: Part II - Donald Trump and the American Presidency: What Needs to be Done

This class presents a speculative look at what is needed to review, reinvigorate, and reinvent the federal government in

the wake of the damage caused by the Trump presidency.  Special attention will be given to the need for an independent and nonpartisan entity to oversee a genuine reform process in such agencies as the Department of State, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.  Congress

itself must be restructured due to the weakening of the Government Accountability Office, the Congressional Research Service, and the Congressional Budget Office.  The corruption in government finds too many former lawmakers and government officials remaining in Washington to lobby for corporate clients who helped to craft a flawed tax bill in 2017 and regularly increased defense spending at the expense of non-defense priorities.

1366 What Type of Safari is Right For You?Rick will compare and contrast the variable attributes of

three types of safaris in which he has participated. The three safaris include a package tour from a major tour provider, a private safari arranged by Rick and a 10-day mobile tented camping experience in the “bush.” Attributes discussed include required

flights, transportation on the safari, lodging, meals, activities, physical (agility) requirements and costs. All aspects will be compared via discussion, pictures and in some cases videos from the actual safaris in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. If you’ve been thinking about going on safari or are just interested in the idea, this presentation is for you.

1368 The Current Political Landscape & the 2020 Presidential Election

Can President Trump win reelection? Can the Democrats choose a nominee who can win Middle America, and not just

the two coasts? These are the questions that will drive our politics for the next year, and that Americans will answer when they go to the polls on Election Day next year. Democrats will say Trump didn’t keep his promise to “drain the swamp,” or build a

wall on the Southern border, or bring back coal jobs, but the incumbent president is a formidable opponent. Meanwhile, Democrats are in the midst of a brutal sorting process called democracy to find their nominee. Eleanor Clift, a columnist with the Daily Beast and a former Newsweek correspondent, has covered every presidential election since 1976 and will offer her insights into this turbulent political time.

1369 Hippie Woman Wild: A Memoir of Life & Love on an Oregon Commune

A not-so-nice Jewish girl, expelled from Yale Drama during the Vietnam protests, abandons her acting dream to follow the man she loves to an off-the-grid commune in Oregon. At 23, Carol

Schlanger was an insecure upper middle class radical. Her parents spoiled her and she expected the universe to follow. It didn’t. After being expelled from Yale, losing a coveted Broadway lead, and seeing a suicide splatter at her feet, she left NYC for the Great Northwest, to live in nature with a man “who made everything beautiful with his hands.”

At that time she chose love and nature, over art and career ... until she didn’t. Follow the author’s struggles in a commune in the Oregon wilderness and her return to reclaim her life as a mother, her power as an artist and her responsibility as an adult.

1372 Practical Equality: Forging Justice in a Divided Nation Practical Equality is an original and compelling book on

the intersection of law and society. Tsai, a leading expert on constitutional law who has written widely in the popular press, traces challenges to equality throughout American history: from the oppression of emancipated

slaves after the Civil War to the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II to President Trump’s ban on Muslim travelers. He applies lessons from these and other past struggles to such pressing contemporary issues as the rights of sexual minorities and the homeless, racism in the criminal justice system, police brutality, voting restrictions, oppressive measures against migrants, and more.

1373 Shpiel Ball!! American Jews and Sports, from the Baseball Diamond to the Boxing Ring and Beyond

October 6, 1965 was the date set for Game One of the World Series between the L.A. Dodgers and the Minnesota Twins. It

would be remembered by American Jews, however, as one of the proudest moments in their history. Lefty pitcher Sandy Koufax, one of the greatest pitchers in baseball, decided – at peril to his career – to forego pitching in that game because it happened to fall on the Jewish High Holy day of Yom Kippur. Although this incident is seen as a high point for many American Jews, it is only one moment in a long and colorful history of Jews in American sports. This illustrated lecture offers an

overview from baseball to boxing, from basketball to ice skating, and from crowded slums in New York and Chicago to the rarified air of radio shows and T.V. Hardened mobsters rub shoulders with yeshiva boys, while 5-foot tall women defy gravity on the same Olympic stage where an American Jewish swimmer broke records that would be unsurpassed for almost forty years. Just in time for this year’s baseball World Series, revisit some of the greatest moments and most enduring questions about American sports and ethnic identity.

be proactive and organized with your health; Being sure your home is prepared to age in; Getting your financial and legal “ducks in a row”; Discussing your wishes and expectations. Panel experts Jeremy Rachlin, Theresa Taylor, and Mary Ann Buckley will help you navigate an increasingly complex landscape of senior services. Find out what is really involved in estate planning. Identify when is it time to move out of a multi-level home and into one-floor living. Hear about how to handle those difficult discussions involving a move. 1375 Paris in the 1920s: Living Well Is the Best Revenge At the center of Paris in the 1920s were Sarah and Gerald

Murphy, wealthy American expatriates. He was the heir to the Mark Cross fortune and she was even wealthier. He coined the expression, “Living Well is the Best Revenge. Their friends were Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Picasso, Archibald McLeish, Philip Barry, Dos Passos, Gertrude Stein, etc. Picasso painted her, Hemingway and Fitzgerald used them as characters in their books. Gerald Murphy began painting and

became a famous artist in his own right. This lecture will take you through the life of artists and writers of Paris in the1920s through the lens and lives of Sarah and Gerald Murphy. We will visit with their friends from the salons of Paris to the bullfights in Spain from Picasso’s infatuation with Sarah Murphy to their Villa on Cape De Antibes, “Villa America” on the Riviera. Their tale continued back in the USA with a law suit (which I handled representing their children) over the ownership of one of Murphy’s great works which now hangs in the Whitney.

1377 Blockchain Technology: What Is It and What is All The Hype About?

Most people have heard of Blockchain and Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency created in 2009. But few people understand what Blockchain and Bitcoin are, how they work, and why billions of dollars are being spent by government and industry to find new and different ways to apply this ingenuous and revolutionary technology. The Blockchain concept was initially intriguing to people suspicious of

government or middlemen. But because of its disruptive and widespread potential, its uses are now being actively explored by a great many governments, investors, and companies in virtually every sector of the economy. Sheldon’s PowerPoint-based presentation, including informative videos, will provide an understandable explanation of Blockchain and Bitcoin.

History1380 The Spanish Civil War – Part I: Dress Rehearsal

The Spanish Civil War began with a coup that attempted to bring down La Niña Bonita, as The Republic was called. In

reality, the war had deeper roots going back to the Spanish American War of 1898, the anarchist violence of the 1910s, the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, and the many failed attempts at liberalization and ending the

monarchy. This lecture will examine the prelude to the Spanish Civil War and how these conflicts set the stage both for the rise of the Republic and the war to come.

1381 The Spanish Civil War – Part II: From the Hope of the Republic to the Carnage of War and DictatorshipOf all the major international crises of the 1930s none aroused

half the passion of the Spanish Civil War.  The length and extent of the conflict provoked a good part of this passion. But perhaps more importantly: it was the one crisis in this period in which some Americans were directly engaged and it centered on an embryonic democracy

nipped in the bud after a brief and tumultuous birth. Its outcome was seen as determinant for the fate of self-government everywhere. In effect, the Spanish Civil War was a preview of the larger war to come: WWII. This lecture will examine the rise of the Republic, the outbreak of the Civil War and its evolution in both the Spanish and European context. Special attention will also be given to the international volunteers that fought in the war, including the Abraham Lincoln Brigade from the United States.

1382 The Declaration of Independence - Why, How and So What?We don’t often think of the Declaration of Independence in

global perspective—but maybe we should.  Its task was to announce to the world that thirteen previously separate colonies had formed a new political union that was now desperately in need of a powerful foreign ally. This was

not the first declaration of independence ever issued, and its ideas and forms betray many influences, both American and European. But its resonance was unparalleled. More than 100 other declarations of independence have been issued in other parts of the world since 1776, a stark reminder that our American Revolution—a modest change in political sovereignty in a few out-of-the-way agricultural colonies on the western rim of the Atlantic Ocean—occupies pride of place in the larger history of global decolonization and post-colonialism. University of Maryland historian Dr. Richard Bell reconstructs the fascinating history of the Declaration of Independence—its origins, its purpose, its impact, and its extraordinary global legacy.

How did Virgil transform Homer’s poetry  from a Greek to a Roman masterpiece--as opposed to merely translating from the Greek to the Latin language? What are the implications of the Iliad, Odyssey, and Aeneid for human thought across the ages? Ori Z Soltes teaches across disciplines at Georgetown University and is the author of

many score books, articles and essays.. Among his recent books is Eros and Eris: Love and Strife in Greek and Latin Literature and their Offspring. There will be a lunch break between Noon and 1:30 for Part II class #1385. Lunch is on your own.

1390 Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and Their Odyssey HomeJoin us for a talk with University of Maryland historian

Dr. Richard Bell, the author of Stolen, a new book that tells the incredible story of five boys whose courage forever changed the fight against slavery in America. In 1825 five young, free black boys from Philadelphia fall into the clutches of the most fearsome gang of kidnappers and slavers in the United States. Over four long months, their kidnappers drive them overland into the Cotton Kingdom to be sold as slaves. Determined to resist, the boys form a tight brotherhood as they

struggle to free themselves and find their way home. Their ordeal—an odyssey that takes them from the Philadelphia waterfront to the marshes of Mississippi and then onward still—shines a glaring spotlight on the Reverse Underground Railroad, a black market network of human traffickers and slave traders who stole away thousands of legally free African Americans from their families in order to fuel slavery’s rapid expansion in the decades before the Civil War.

1396 The Torch Song TraditionHelen Morgan laments she “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” Marlene

Dietrich is “Falling in Love Again” and Billie Holiday pines away for “My Man.”  Peggy Lee asks her lover “Why Don’t You Do Right?”  But her “Fever” still does not break.  Frank Sinatra is in a bar at quarter to three drinking “One for My Baby (and One More for the Rod)” and Ella Fitzgerald bemoans, “Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall,” while Julie London tells a man who done

her wrong, “Cry Me a River.”  Rock music largely drowned out these lovelorn ballads, but recently Amy Winehouse, Adele and Lana Del Rey have added new songs to the canon of heartbreak.  Join me to explore the torch song tradition.  What is it about these late-night ballads of love longed for, lost or unrequited that makes sinking into melancholy seem so enticing?

1397 Stephen Sondheim Many love Stephen Sondheim’s work for its musical and

lyrical genius. Others claim his opus is too cynical, off beat, and misogynistic. But few dispute his unofficial title as the “father of the modern American musical.” He has been described as “now the greatest and perhaps

best-known artist in the American musical theater.” Sondheim received an Academy Award in 1990 for Best Song for Sooner or Later in the film Dick Tracy, eight Tony Awards (more than any other composer, including a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre,) eight Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama in 1984 for Sunday in the Park with George, a Laurence Olivier Award, and a 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom. Few of Sondheim’s shows were big, popular, long running hits but nearly all were well received by critics, other artists, and show music cognoscenti in the public.

1399 Children in the Renaissance Art - Trip to the National Gallery of ArtThe National Gallery in Washington has an unusually rich

collection of portraits of children. We begin by seeing how images of the Christ Child evolve from looking like a little old man to a real infant, and then see portraits of real children in the guise of little saints (especially, the young St. John the Baptist), and finally actual children. Among the very famous ones are Holbein’s portrait of Edward VII, the son of King Henry VIII, the eleven-year-old Alessandro Farnese by Titian, Lucas Cranach’s portraits of a prince and

princess of Saxony, the portraits of the Cattaneo children by Van Dyck. Other portraits of children who are not identified by name include Judith Leyster’s Young Boy in Profile, Rembrandt’s Girl with a Broom, and a very few naughty children just for good measure. The lecture will discuss changing attitudes toward children during times of high infant mortality. We will also tour the exhibition - Verrocchio: Sculptor and Painter of Renaissance Florence. The class fee includes round trip transportation to and from LLB. Lunch is on your own.
