An exhibition titled “Mt. Fuji Monkey Enclosure In Aoyama” will be held at Itochu Aoyama Art Square (Minato City, Tokyo) from January 4 to 17. Taking the theme of monkeys, the zodiac animal of 2016, and Mt. Fuji, a symbol of good luck, more than 100 paintings by young Japanese artists will be on display. At the With Bunny cafe in Asakusa, Taito City, Tokyo Prefecture, people go to see, play with, and learn about different types of rabbits. Nicolas House is a rabbit-themed cafe in Shibuya City, Tokyo Prefecture. Customers don a pair of bunny ears when they enter the cafe here – which is decorated with stuffed toy rabbits and paintings of rabbits. Several types of bunny ears are available on loan and customers who visit frequently can borrow ones with lots of flowers and ribbons.

Items on the cafe’s menu include a rabbit-shaped parfait, cream puffs, and a French dish served in the shape of a rabbit’s face. In addition to products with rabbit motifs, the cafe sells rabbit-shaped cream puffs and crepes made in-store. Nicolas himself serves custom-ers, often wearing a pair of bunny ears. “Rabbits are the reason I came to Japan,” says Nicolas. “When I was a child, my moth-er bought me a calendar with Japanese motifs, such as Mt. Fuji, on it. A picture of cherry blos-soms and a white rabbit attracted me so much that I hoped to come to Japan one day and ended up settling down here. That’s why I continue to make the dishes and sweets of France, my mother country, in the shape of rabbits.”

Each pa i r of pop tab i is carefully handmade by artisans. As there are many stages in the production pro-cess, it takes a long time to make a pair of tabi. Small pieces are stitched together to produce a durable and smooth tabi. Once the foot has been firmly placed inside a tabi, it is fastened with metal clasps called “kohaze.” Each pop tabi kohaze is engraved with a “Japan” stamp, giving the product an upmarket and stylish finish.

The footwear business for travelers flour-i shed because of Gyoda City’s prox-imity to Nakasendo, o n e o f t h e f i v e h i g h w a y s o f t h e Edo period and also because cotton – one of the main mate-rials used to make tabi – was produced there.

At the Japan Expo, held in Paris, France in July, 2015, pop tabi were displayed under the name of “SAMURAI-TABI.” “Although they were a little expensive, many people understood that they were worth the price because they’d been made by artisans. It seems that the patterns made an impression on peo-ple, too. The response was better than I expected,” says Komatsu. Komatsu wants to promote the appeal of Japanese culture to the world through tabi. “I want to discover new ways, as yet not conceived of by Japanese, for tabi to be worn, for example, wearing a pair of them instead of slippers.”
