    HEDDA MITTNER

We are expecting a very good

    season, saysMary Faure, chair-

    person of Hermanus Tourism.

Bookings are up from last year

and we are having to turn away

people who are looking for ac-

    commodation on a daily basis.

    Several roleplayers in the local

    tourism and hospitality industries

    share Faures opinion,which corre-

sponds to a positive trend in the

    whole of the Western Cape.

All our regions are expecting a

good influx of tourists this year,

says Judy Lain, chief marketing of-

ficer at Wesgro, the Western Capes

    Tourism, Investment and Trade

    Promotion Agency.

    The accommodation establish-

ments are much busier than last

    year, confirms Sun Greeff, tour-

ism manager of the Cape Whale

Coast. The rand is veryweakat the

    moment and overseas visitors seem

    tobe takingadvantageof the favour-

    able exchange rate.

    According toGreeff, the statistics

for visitors to the CapeWhale Coast

    tourism bureaus Hermanus,

    Hangklip-Kleinmond, Stanford and

During the month of October alone

    comparedto3 802inthesamemonth

    The enquiries are coming in

thick and fast, adds Teressa Jones,

    office manager of Hermanus Tour-

ism, and not only from overseas

vistors. I think the weaker rand is

    seeing local visitors spending their

holiday at the coast, rather than

    travelling abroad. We are heavily

    bookedover theperiod20December

to 5 January; however there is still

    availability.

    General Manager of the Windsor

busy this year. And the forward

    bookings right up until February

are phenomenal. In fact, we have

had an incredible run since June,

and I thinkweare in for onehelluva

    December.

    Albertalso feels that thedeclining

rand plays a role by attracting for-

    eigners and trapping locals.

    Monique Oosthuizen, PA to the

general manager of The Marine, al-

so reports that for the first two

weeks in December they are busier

    than usual, with high occupancy

    continuing through January and

hurt tourism in the long run as visi-

tors will not return if they dont get

    value for money.

    MaryFauresaysshelikestothink

    rather the tremendous effort that

    Anotherman falls victim toATM fraud

    JANINE VAN DER RIET

An elderly man in a wheelchair became the

second victim of an ATM card fraud scheme

at the Gateway Centre on Sunday afternoon,

only days after a 96-year old man was also

    conned at the same ATM.

An amount of R4 000 was withdrawn from

the mans account on Sunday, after he had

finished his transaction at the Absa ATM.

He said he was offered help quite force-

fully by people standing around even though

he did not need any help.

    According toMarelizeAcker, officeadmin-

istrator at the Gateway Centres centreman-

agement, many cases of fraud and theft have

    been reported to them.

We suspect that the fraudsters drive a tur-

quoise Toyota Tazz with a CA registration

number, as we have seen them hanging

around the centre and ATMs for quite some

time now. When the security at the centre

tries to confront the suspects however,

    they (usually) drive off.

The centre has informed police about the

    incidents.

Hermanus police says they are aware of

about 40 incidents of card fraud orATM theft

at ATMs at the Gateway Centre and the cen-

    tral business district this year.

    According to lieutenant Fadila September,

spokesperson for the Hermanus police, they

    have received information about possible

suspects involved in these scams and are fol-

    lowing up on these leads.

    The communication department of the

Hermanus police has embarked on aware-

ness campaigns around ATMs. They distrib-

uted pamphlets to users at ATMs and are

    planning further awareness campaigns.

Police officers have also been made aware

of these incidents and increased patrols will

    be conducted around the ATMs.

    Thepublic isurgedonceagainto takecare

    Twomurder suspects remain in custody

    JANINE VAN DER RIET

The two suspects arrested for the separate

murders of two Zwelihle residents remain in

    custody.

    Hermanus police detectives arrested both

    suspects on the same day.

The suspect in the murder of Thobelani

Fuazani (23) in Mfundo Street appeared in

court on Tuesday. The case was postponed

until 3 December for a bail application. Fua-

zani died after he and the suspect allegedly

fought over a R1 coin in a shebeen. He was

stabbed in the chest and died on the scene.

In the second incident Nicolas Qobani (18)

    waswaiting forhisbrotheroutsideashebeen

in Transit Camp when a man allegedly

stabbed him in the neck and ran away.

Qobani died on the scene. He was out on

bail in connection with a murder at the time

    of the incident.

The suspect in this case abandonedhis bail

    applicationandwill remain incustody,pend-

    ing further investigation.

    operations since accident

    JANINE VAN DER RIET

Lina Philander, the pedestrian who was

knocked down by a motorist in a black

    VolkswagenBeetle at theKidbrooke turn off

in Onrus on the morning of Monday 18 No-

    vember, is still in hospital.

A case of reckless and negligent driving

    isbeinginvestigatedbytheHermanuspolice

    against the driver.

The driver said he had lost control of his

vehicle and in the process knocked overPhi-

lander, who was crossing the road.

    Philanderwas first takento theHermanus

Provincial Hospital and was later trans-

ferred to a hospital in Worcester.

    Her daughterMonique says hermother is

still in hospital and has had to undergo two

operations so far, but that she is doing well

    under the circumstances.

    Monique thanked everyone most sincere-

ly for assisting her mother at the accident

    scene.

    Insurance claims flooding in

    KERRY VAN RENSBURG

Insurance companies have had their hands

full trying to assess the extent of the damage

caused by the recent flood to private house-

    holds and small businesses.

Torrential rain on Friday 15 November

and Saturday 16 November flooded homes,

    destroyed business premises and damaged

    stock.

Donald Kau, head of corporate affairs at

    Santam,says: Wevereceived justover1 000

claims estimated to be worth in the region

of R30 million at this point for the Somerset

West area all the way past Hermanus to

Gansbaai. These would primarily be house-

holds as well as small businesses.

    Daniel Bothma fromDawieBothma Insur-

ance Consultancy in Hermanus, says Her-

manus didnt suffer that badly and as far as

claims go, it was not nearly as bad as they

    had expected.

Daniel says they are agents for Santam,

and had about five claims which included a

    clients carwhichwas ruinedafterhis entire

driveway was flooded, and homes that were

flooded madeworse by sewage running in-

    to the houses.

    Theyalsohadseveral smaller claimsrelat-

    ed to flood damage.

Daniel says Santam are giving policyhold-

ers that have been impacted by the flood,

precedence at the moment, which means

their claims are being processed first.

    NinaDeDoes,Hermanus branchmanager

    ofPrismConsultants, confirmed this, saying

    the insurancecompany (mostof theirclients

    are insured throughSantam), codesanevent

like the flood as a catastrophic event, and all

claims for flood damage are linked and have

    priority over regular claims.

De Does says this is because peoples

homes have been badly damaged and they

need to have them sorted out as quickly as

    possible.

She says their clientswho have household

    and homeowner insurance are insured

against disasters of this nature, which in-

cludes both the contents of their homes and

the physical structure of the house.

    DeDoes says theyhave definitely received

more claims than normal and so far they

have 22 additional claims all as a result of

    flood damage.

She says their biggest claim is for about

    R500 000.

sustainable they need a proper roof so that

they can keep going in the wet weather.

We have approximately 60 traders who re-

ly on the market for their income and there

are peoplewhoare suffering. We can ill afford

this kind of setback. said Van Coppenhagen

who was frustrated by the rain and the mud.

    Toalleviate theground-water seepageprob-

lem, Andrienette Fourie and Andre van der

    Merwe fromtheHermanusSportsClub (HSC)

committee organised a digger loader to dump

dry sand at the entrance to the market and

    at the worst affected areas.

The digger loader and its driver came cour-

    tesy of Peter Starke Civils.

Furrows were dug so the water could flow

into the nearby storm-water drainage area,

and sludge pumpswere installed to pump out

thousands of litres of water. This water had

to flow into the already overflowing and

swampy storm-water drain which runs along

the edge of the cricket ground in the direction

    ofHermanusHigh in JoseBurmanRoad. Van

Coppenhagen says the market traders are

    thankful to StevenMurphy fromCoastal Tool

Hire who provided the sludge pump at no

charge. On behalf of the market traders, Van

Coppenhagen would like to thank the many

people who came to their rescue on Friday.

Although the traders could trade on Satur-

    day, thehoursofdiggingandthedigger loader

    helpedprovideashort-termsolution toa long-

term problem. By Saturday, wooden pallets

were laid down in the soggiest areas for mar-

    ket visitorswhostreamed inby thehundreds.

On Friday Liza van Coppenhagen (right) and

her team had sludge pumps going to drain

away ground water seepage. Michael Bayer

(left) from The Beanery, spent the entire day

digging, draining and sloshing around in

kneedeep mud. They were assisted by Victor

    James and John Nyabunze.

    Minister visits for16days campaign

    JANINE VAN DER RIET

As part of his 16 Days of No Vio-

    lence against Women and Chil-

    dren campaign, Dan Plato, West-

    ern Cape MEC for Community

    Safety, visited Hermanus and

    Zwelihle on Monday.

    His first stopwasat the communi-

    ty hall in Proteadorp, Kleinmond

where Plato raised his concerns re-

    garding violence against women

and children. Plato thenwent to the

relaunch of the trauma room facili-

ty at the Kleinmond police station,

which was upgraded by the Busi-

    ness Against Crime (BAC) and

    Kleinmond Superspar.

Platos next stop was at the Her-

manus police station for the re-

launch of their trauma centre, to-

    gether with representatives of BAC

and the owners of Eastcliff Spar.

Shawn Koen from BAC said they

    started the initiative, in partner-

ship with police stations across the

country and with Spar as the spon-

sor, to transform all the trauma

rooms into a cosy, happy and safe

    environment for victims.

    All thevictimsupportroomswill

    look the same,witha relaxedatmos-

    phere, said Koen. These rooms

must assist victims to become vic-

tors at the end of the day.

    Two such brave victors shared

    theirstoriesattherelaunchceremo-

    ny.

One is 69-year old Roseline Forte

from Mount Pleasant, who said she

is a victor today after being raped

    by four men in 2001.

In 2002 she tested positive for

HIV/Aids, but says she is fighting

    the stigmaaswell as the illnesswith

    a smile on her face.

    At theclinic IamknownasKan-

    niedoodandthesistersareamazed

that I continue to live a good,

    healthy life.

A volunteer at the trauma centre,

    Christine May has helped Forte

over the years. Christine is my an-

gel in disguise. Without her help I

    would have been lost.

    Another brave victor, Irma van

    Heerden, spokeaboutanabusive re-

lationship that almost cost her her

life. I am thankful that the police

    stood byme, helpedme tomove out,

and kept me and my two children

safe. She spoke bravely about the

    nightmare she went through.

    Plato asked all non-profit organi-

sations to step in and help the trau-

ma room remain a place of comfort

    and safety for the community.

It is time to speak out. If you are

abused, speak out. This is the only

way that this type of crime can be

    stopped.

    ColVincentCetyana,clustercom-

    manderoftheHermanuspolice, told

Plato that every police station need-

ed a domestic violence office so that

cases of abuse could be followed up

    regularly.

After Platos visit to the Her-

manus police station, hewent to the

    community hall in Zwelihle where,

    together with his entourage and

    Overstrand municipality council-

lors, he took to the streets of Zwelih-

le, handing out goodie bags with

    food and pamphlets to residents.

Our women and children have a

right to be safe and treated with re-

spect and care. Partners and family

    membersmust takecareofeachoth-

er. Only when we have peace in our

homes can we have peace in our

    communities, Plato said.

    In the newly revamped trauma

    room are: back, left: Shawn

    Koen (Business Against Crime), Bern

    van Heerden (Eastcliff Spar), Pieter

    Scholtz (deputy mayor), Col Fran

    November.

    This child and family orientated

    programme is run in Zwelihle,

    Parenting Worx started in Zwel-

ihle in 2009 with 14 women and has

    since grown exponentially.

Speaking on behalf of the Rain-

    bow Trust, Winnie Nywebeni said

The mothers, and a few fathers

who are part of the Parenting

    Worxs Fatherhood programme,

have an opportunity twice a week,

to speak about their problems, ex-

    periences and the challenges they

face. They also receive input on

    how to lookafter their childrenand

    be responsible parents. The pro-

    gramme has an income generating

project in the formof a garden initi-

ative and participants are able to

play sport as a form of exercise and

    stress relief.

    Every Wednesday, medical stu-

dents from the University of Stel-

lenbosch visit the women and offer

parenting advice and a health care

    programme.

    At Thursdays event, groups of

    women fromeachcommunitywere

represented and took to the stage

to tell what the programme meant

to them and to sing a number of

    items which resounded through

    the hall.

Members of the Zwelihle Parenting Worx programme took to the stage

at the Zwelihle Community Hall to sing a few songs as part of the

Whale Coast FM, the Overstrands very

own community radio station, turns five

    in December.

Who would have thought that a conversa-

tion around a braai in 2007 would lead to the

issuing of a five-year licence from the Inde-

    pendentBroadcastingAuthority of SouthAf-

rica (Icasa) the following year, said John

Mathew, the stations director. With some

    timelygrant funding fromtheMediaDiversi-

    firston-airstudiowasbuiltatVillageSquare.

Since December 2008, for 18 hours every

day, Whale Coast FM has been the rhythm

of the Overstrand. With two transmitters,

one above Hawston, the other above Her-

    manus Heights, WCFM broadcasts from

    Hangklip to Pearly Beach.

Catering to the needs of a diverse commu-

nity like that of the Overstrand isnt always

easy, but our eclectic mix of Afrikaans, Eng-

lish and isiXhosa programming seems to

    havestruckahappybalance forall our listen-

    ers, said Mathew.

This is certainly reflected by the many

calls the station and its presenters receive

daily. However, calls offering criticism or

suggestions are not only gladly received, but

invited on air, as they help us fine-tune the

    station.

some and replace other pieces of equipment

    andtocarryoutgeneralmaintenance.Unlike

the national broadcaster, the SABC, Whale

Coast FM receives no licence fees or other

official sustenance for this purpose. The sta-

tion has to fund itself, and does so with the

committed support of local businesses. How-

ever, even this support does not cover all of

the expenses of keeping a radio station on air

and functioning for 18 hours a day.

    afternoon as one man pre-

2,5 kg steak within a two

    It all started when local

dared Du Toit to better his previous record,

rolling in with donations of R100 each prom-

    couldnt finish the 2,5 kg

    steak.

    Thedatewas set forTues-

    Even though he did not

    manage to finish, everyone

who had made bets still do-

    as a bit extra toBrakkenjan

over and above the R500 do-

    appcompetition

A Gr 11 IT whizz from Her-

    manus High is the Western

    Cape winner of the Mobile

    Application Design (MAD)

    challenge.

    For this competition, Jaco

    du Plooy developed a mobile

    app called CV Creator, which

allows users to create a per-

    sonal and professional Cur-

    riculum Vitae.

    Jaco says entry forms were

    sent to schools and colleges

    that offer Information Tech-

nology (IT) as a subject and

the 70 top achievers in IT and

    maths in the Western Cape

were selected to take part in

    the MAD challenge, which

    was hosted by BlackBerry.

The first part of the compe-

tition was a course to educate

    the competitors about mobile

    programming (the making of

mobile apps) and the world of

    apps, says Jaco.

The training was followed by the actual

    competition. Entrants competed against one

another to make an app that would wow the

judges and get the best score in fields of usa-

    bility, economic value, programming diffi-

culty, what was done in the time given, gen-

    eraldesignof theappanduser-friendliness.

Only 18 of the 70 participants completed

the task and handed in apps.

Jaco says his CV Creator enables users to

enter their details into the given fields and

the app then writes the information into a

pdf document, which serves as an electronic

    CV.

After creating your CV on the app, you

    can, forexample,attachtheCV

to an e-mail and send it to pos-

sible employers as a job appli-

    cation, he explains.

    One of the big advantages

of this app is that it is mobile

and you can carry it with you

at all times since it is on your

    smartphone. The CVs that are

created are also saved on your

    phone which means they are

    always accessible.

    Jaco says Duhard Swanep-

oel, a friend from school who

takes graphic design as a sub-

    ject, helped him develop the

face of the app which in-

    cludes the unique identifying

    logo and icon.

    At the prize giving function

on 8 November it was an-

    nounced that Jacos app

    achieved the best score and

that he was the winner of the

    Western Cape division of the

    competition.

    He received a BlackBerry

hamper with a T-shirt, pen, bag and a new

    BlackBerry z10 smartphone.

As the winner of this competition Jaco

says: I am now able to publish my app on

Blackberrys app world from which all

BlackBerry owners around the world can

    purchase my app.

He says the MAD challenge was a great

    learning experience andhehopes that itwill

open the right doors when he applies for ter-

tiary education next year. I would like to

thank my IT teacher JA Victor and CAT

    ATM fraud a reality

We have preached about this topic

many times in different articles, but

still there are innocent, soft targets be-

ing besieged by people with no con-

science, who steal other peoples hard-

    earned money.

Many of us feel weve heard it all be-

    foreandpay littleheedwhen thepolice

warn us to be vigilant and wary when

drawing money but it is the truth.

Next time you visit an ATM, first

look around you. Are there any suspi-

cious looking people about? Is there a

security guard nearby? Does the bank

    have surveillance cameras focused on

    the ATM?

    It isabitofamysteryas tohowexact-

ly thieves use skimming devices to

gain access to your money after you

    leavetheATM,butonethingis forsure

sure nobody is lurking about and do

    not ever ask for help.

Rather ask a friend or family mem-

    ber to go with you.

If you need assistance, go into your

bank and ask the staff to help you.

The closer it gets to the festive sea-

son, the more desperate and careless

    thieves are becoming.

Take care of yourself, and yourmon-

    ey.

    Understand our rights

    InresponsetothereactionofThamiePoniand

Bobby von During to my letter (Who and

from where are the marchers? Hermanus

Times 21 November) just the following:

The gentlemen refer to the Constitution re-

garding the freedom of movement (Art.21:1).

Precisely my point: If people are not happy

with what they get from the (DA) provincial

and local government, they are free to go to

    any ANC-governed province.

The Constitution also says: Everyone has

the right, peacefully and unarmed, to assem-

ble, to demonstrate, to picket and to present

    petitions. (Art.17)

They are, however, not free to engage in ri-

    otous, destructive and criminal behaviour.

What is more, the Constitution guarantees

the right to have access to adequate hous-

ing (26.1). Nowhere does the Constitution

guarantee any right to free housing.

If that were the case, then every present

homeowner can claim payback of the full

amount of their house from government

that is the consequence of reading free into

    the Constitution.

    The argument that government provides

    Municipal Infrustructure Grant (MIG) fund-

ing for theupgrading of informal settlements,

is even more condemning on the riotous be-

    haviour of the marchers.

Why protest against a local government, if

it is the state who fails to provide sufficient

    funding?

And yes, I am worried about the plight of

fellow South Africans and the atrocious con-

ditions they are living under. But no, I dont

think that swamping one province is the an-

    swer.

    Weneedtodevelop, ineverysense, theprov-

ince where the needs of these people are not

    being met.

The Eastern Cape, for one, has everything

needed to provide massive economic growth,

and all the benefits accruing from that.

    Whyshouldpeoplegoelsewhere, liveunder

atrocious conditions, wait long for housing,

have to resort to begging just because that

    province is being mal-governed?

    Thank you NG Kerk

Having lived in Hermanus for more than 20

years and taking a keen interest in those less

fortunate thanmyself, I have come to the con-

clusion that the NG Kerk Hermanus is an

amazing organisation that is run by true

Christians who make a real difference.

I am not a member of this church, but I

would like to express my whole-hearted sup-

port to Santie, the social worker, who, by

charging the needy a very nominal fee for

clothes, is allowing them tokeep their dignity

and to develop a sense of responsibility.

This fee then goes towards helping other

good causes, like meals for the aged and the

    homeless.

Thank you to all those caring people at the

NG Kerk who make a positive difference and

to all the citizens of our lovely town, please

    Empower thedisempowered inourmidst

Despite the typical vitality, spontaneity and

goodwill that prevail among the dwellers of

    present-day South African townships, the

danger is very real that many of these impov-

    erished, overcrowded and ever-expanding ar-

    easmaydevelop into sprawling, crime-ridden

and out-of- control ghettoes. Zwelihle, our lo-

cal township, is no exception as it continues

to experience a constant influx, mostly from

    the Eastern Cape.

The worrying factor is that most of these

daily arrivals are cash-strapped and without

homes or employment awaiting them at this

end. But if one wishes to gain some perspec-

tive in this regard, one needs to be willing to

    confront some uncomfortable realities: An

    EasternCapecitizenwhohasa stable income,

lives in a house with running water and elec-

tricity, and has basic amenities such as

schools, clinics and shopswithin reach, is un-

likely to get onto a bus or taxi, in the hope

of finding a better life elsewhere.

    The fellowSouthAfrican,whoarrives from

the Eastern Cape, is more likely to be an im-

poverished person with limited skills, some-

one who finds himself deprived of opportuni-

ties andmeans to break out of his cycle of des-

    peration.

    Despite my natural inclination towards

    positivity, I havecome to considerSouthAfri-

ca a desperate place, a country in need of a

drastic turnabout strategy if it is to succeed

in the long term. Twenty years down the line

it has become obvious to me that the govern-

ment, in many ways, has neither the ability,

nor the capacity, to do justice to thehopes and

dreams of the township dwellers, and in par-

ticular the youths, amongwhom Iworked ex-

    tensively for many years.

My hope is invested in the empowered

South African who constantly reaches out to

his fellowmen. As I see it, whether ourmotive

is altruistic or self-survival, a turnabout will

    Oosiegets the jobdone

On Sunday 17 November I was treated to

some top-drawer service beyond the nor-

mal call of duty, and experienced some-

thing about staff attitudes and relation-

ships from the people of Hermanus Supa

Quick. The story goes like this:

On Sunday morning I was stuck. The

carwouldnt start, the battery having giv-

en up the ghost overnight. It is five years

old, after all. On Saturday evening I

thought a problem was looming, but

hoped to survive through Sunday until

    Monday. I tested thecells.Nodoubt, anew

    battery was required.

So now what to do? It was Sunday no-

body is open! Ah, maybe Julie Minnaar

    knewsomeone; shesbeeninthebusiness.

So I phoned her and told her the prob-

lem. I need a new battery. Do you know

if anyone is open? Julie said she would

    SMS me someones number.

Then my cellphone went; it showed

    Ooswaldsnumber.Hemustbe the tech-

nician, I thought. I phoned the number,

got a message to leave a message, and did

    so.

    Shortly thereafter, aman phoned about

the message and I told him my need. He

said hes just entering church, can I hang

on for an hour until 10 oclock. I said OK.

Just overhalf anhour later I sawavehi-

cle outside my gate and a tall, big guy ap-

proaching. Id seen him before, at Supa

Quick, but hes not the battery technician

he owns the place. He is the grootbaas!

    ItwasOoswaldOosthuizenhimself, but

why soquickly? It turnedout that hiswife

    alsoreceivedamessageduringtheservice

to attend to a medical case.

    Theywereinchurchjustdowntheroad,

so they came via my place, picked me up,

dropped her off to attend to her case, took

me to Supa Quick, got the battery and

tools, produced the invoice, accepted the

payment then back to my house to ex-

    change the batteries. Job done!

So there you have it. The staff relation-

ship allows Julie to feel free to involve

    Ooswaldtheboss/ownertogofixmyprob-

    lem on a Sunday.

Ooswald himself has created the ena-

bling climate, and effectively dealt with

his wifes call-out, and my need, wasting

    notime,makingnofuss.Thejobsgotdone,

and the rest of the staff could enjoy their

    Sunday.

Thats first class, Julie, Ooswald, and

    Supa Quick. Real quick.

    I thank you.
