Programme Aims:

The programme aims to provide students with:

1 a historical perspective on the development of English from its inception to the present day;2 a sound understanding of key linguistic concepts relating to the grammatical structure and sound system ofEnglish;3 coverage of topics primarily focusing on sociolinguistic dimensions;4 contextualised understanding of the theories and methods applied to the study of the English Language;5 developed skills in retrieving information, analysing texts and academic writing in the subject.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course all students on English Language should be able to:

1 demonstrate a sound understanding of the relationship between language and society according to factors sucha class, age, gender, sexuality, religious identity and ethnicity;2 formulate a hypothesis, gather evidence and construct a sophisticated argument;3 engage in informed discussion on the ethical and theoretical issues involved in contemporary sociolinguisticresearch;4 show a critical appreciation of the multi-faced nature of the discipline, and its complex relationships to otherdisciplines and forms of knowledge;5 demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the main theories and fields of investigation concerning thebroader human language faculty;6 show a critical awareness and understanding of the social history of language;7 access and manipulate linguistic databases.
