Is your life so disorganized that it’s costing you money?

If you’re like all too many Americans, you’re spending so much time rummaging around for lost or misplaced items-wasting a combined 9 million hours a day—that you’re probably too frazzled to even contemplate that question. That’s a real shame. Because it turns out it’s not just stuff like car keys and medicine we’re mislaying. According to Harris Interactive, 23 percent of adults admit to paying their bills late because they’ve lost them in what we’ll call The Great Abyss. And you know what happens when you don’t pay your bills on time, right? You incur late fees—and, in the case of bank credit cards, for example, also open yourself to sky-high annual interest rates. “People have to realize that being disorganized has real-life consequences,” says organizational expert Jill Pollack, who’s been featured everywhere from WE’s “Bridezillas” to FoxNews.com. Time you organized your life? Read on for some expert tips: • Baskets are your new best friend. Everyone in your house should have his or her own decorative one to hold loose items. “It’s an instant declutterer,” says Pollack. • Your second-best friend is your coding system. Alphabetizing your fi les—yes, you’ll need fi les—is apparently so yesterday. The “more intuitive” way to go? Colors. You know, green for fi nancial documents,

red for health matters, and so on. • No one should be without a “home management” binder. Well, okay, you can probably do without it if you’re paying someone $100,000 a year just to keep track of your family’s schedule, emergency contact numbers and all the rest of life’s minutiae that contribute to high stress levels. But for the rest of us, Pollack advises separating each section with Avery NoteTabs (www.avery.com) that have the advantage of being writable, highlightable, stickable and removable. • Stay on top of your bills. Not only do current bills rate a fi le folder all their own—color code it neon green, if you like—but you need to make a habit of going through it once or twice a week to remit payment. • Clear your desk. If your home’s cluttered, odds are so is your offi ce. Make a point to clear it before you leave at night so you can start fresh in the morning. Pollack has three fi nal words of advice for pack rats who insist on keeping every last tax return (seven years normally suffi ces), every last paycheck (toss once you’ve gotten your W-2 form) and every last credit card statement (shred immediately, after checking for accuracy, since they’re a prime source of identity theft). Those words? “Purge, purge, purge.” -(NAPSI)

MONEY SAVING TIP - YOUR FUEL PUMP

Your fuel pump is a hard working and often ignored piece of equipment. They are mondo expensive too. When a fuel

pump fails it can cost anywhere from $600 to $1200 depending on how hard it is to get to the pump itself. First, let’s talk a little about the pump itself and the differences in repairs from one shop to another. If your vehicle is an 1985 or newer you probably have an electric fuel pump. Yes, a little electric motor that sits in the gas tank itself. This pump is usually part of a larger assembly which contains the fuel fl oat. That is the part that tells your fuel gauge how much fuel you have on board. There is normally a pick up screen which strains the fuel before it goes into the pump as well. Many shops will replace just the little motor when a fuel pump fails.

I cannot recommend against this enough.

That pick up screen, the wiring within the assembly and the fl oat all effect how well that new pump will work. Also, I often insist on changing the main fuel fi lter because this little unsung hero is what causes many fuel pumps to fail in the fi rst place. You see it is not enough to just replace the part that failed. You also need to holistically look at the system and see what CAUSED the part to fail. This is very important and when price shopping these details are often over-looked. Personally, I would rather pay once and be done than have to pay over and over again when the cheaper job fails. My partner has a saying that I like: The bitterness of poor quality lingers long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten. So now, what can you do to avoid this head-ache altogether? Here you go:

1. Never let your fuel level go below ½ a tank.

I know this is a pain in our busy lives but this tip can save you time, aggravation, and most importantly, MONEY. The fuel pump is cooled by gasoline. And as we all know, electronics hate heat. When the fuel level drops below ½ a tank the electric portion of the pump is often exposed and in the summertime it can get quite warm in the tank. In the wintertime keeping the fuel above ½ tank will prevent condensation or water build up in the tank. Both your engine and your fuel pump will thank you for that.

2. Change your fuel fi lter every 15k miles.

Unless you have a really good shop to remind you about this you may never think about it. Your repair facility is not trying to bilk you for more money. If they recom-mend a fuel fi lter by miles they are really trying to save you money in the long run. Let them. The reason the fuel fi lter is so important is when it gets clogged it restricts the fl ow of gasoline. This causes the computer to call for more and more fuel making your fuel pump run harder and faster. The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long. We also have the worst fuel in the country here in Albuquerque, NM. This stresses the fuel fi lter and causes it to clog faster. The only way to maintenance the fuel fi lter is to replace it. I have been driving for close to 30 years now and I have never had to replace a fuel pump on my own vehicles. But I see the frus-tration and inconvenience of my customers every summer.
