Given the differences in climate and crops around the world, harvest festivals can be found at various times at different places. Harvests festivals typically feature feasting, both family and public, with foods that are drawn from crops that come to maturity around the time of the festival. Ample food and freedom from the necessity to work in the fields are two central features of harvest festivals: eating, merriment, contests, music and romance are common features of harvest festivals around the world. In North America, Canada and the US each have their own Thanksgiving celebrations in October and November. Certain religious holidays, such as Sukkot, have their roots in harvest festivals. In Britain, thanks have been given for successful harvests since pagan times. Harvest festival is traditionally held on the Sunday near or of the Harvest Moon. This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox (about Sept. 23). In two years out of three, the Harvest Moon comes in September, but in some years it occurs in October. The celebrations on this day usually include singing hymns, praying, and decorating churches with baskets of fruit and food in the festival known as Harvest Festival, Harvest Home or Harvest Thanksgiving. In British and English-Caribbean churches, chapels and schools, and some Canadian churches, people bring in produce from the garden, the allotment or farm. The food is often distributed among the poor and senior citizens of the local community, or used to raise funds for the church, or charity. In the United States, many churches also bring in food from the garden or farm in order to celebrate the harvest. The festival is set for a specific day and has become a national holiday known as Thanksgiving which falls on the fourth Thursday in November. In both Canada and the United States, it has also become a national secular holiday with religious origins, but in Britain it is both a Church festival giving thanks to God for the harvest and a more secular festival remembered in schools. In our tradition it is part of the aadya fala perunaal in which all the members of the church bring in their first crops to the church as their offerings to the God. And the major share goes for the charity. To help the poor and the needy. HARVEST FESTVAL Harvest Festival 2013

\ncWw tZhmebwNiranam near Tiruvalla was an important trading centre and a well known port at that time. The port seems to have been destroyed in the big flood in AD1341. Niranam, almost midway between Quilon and Kokkamangalam is now in the hands of Orthodox Syrian Church. The church underwent many reconstructions and modifications. The church previous to the present one was renovated in1259AD. The church founded by St Thomas is in the name of St Mary. This is perhaps the only Church which still exists as a monument and link to St Thomas time in central Kerala and speaks about the tradition of the Syrian Christians. At present, the fourth building is in the place of the original Church that was believed to be founded by Apostle St. Thomas. It was consecrated by Saint Vattasseril Geevarghese Mar Dionysius, The Malankara Metropolitan on 14 February, 1912 AD. It is under the Syrian Orthodox Church and also under the Niranam Diocese of the Orthodox Church. Most of the ancient families in Champakulam, Changanacherry, Kallupara, Thiruvalla, etc were once members of this church.

Birth Name Philipose Born 1781Died October 9, 1855Buried Cheppad St. George O S C Philipose Mar Dionysius was born in 1781 at the Aanjilimootil family in Pallippad, a picturesque village having pristine beauty located at Karthikapally Taluk of Alapuzha district in Kerala State, India. Punnathara Mar Dionysius Metropolitan (Mar Thoma XI) died on May 17, 1825. To select a successor representatives of the parishes met together at Pallikara palli, Thiruvalla under the leadership of Mar Philixinos II of Thozhyoor Church who was the Malankara metropolitan at that time. The names of Cheppad Anjilimootil Philipose Kathanar, Kalloopara Adangapurathu Ouseph Kathanar and Kottayam Eruthickal Markose Kathanar were proposed. After prayer they cast lots and the lot fell to Philipose Kathanar. Philipose Ramban was consecrated by Geevarghese Mar Philexenos of the Malabar Independent Syrian Church on August 27, 1825 at Kottayam Cheria palli. Because Mar Philexenos was not a Metropolitan of Malankara church (Thozhyoor Church), Cheppad Anjilimootil Philipose Ramban was given the episcopal title Cheppad Philipose Mar Dionysious. He was the fourth Metropolitan in the Malankara Church to get this title Dionysius.Cheppad Philipose Mar Dionysius died on October 9, 1855, and was laid to rest at Cheppad St George O S C.
