Rev. K.I. PHILIP RAMBAN “The Messiah of the downtrodden”(Director of St. Pauls Ashram and Balabhavan)

The life of very Rev. K.I. Philip Ramban is a saga of bringing hope and relief to the downtrodden and the distressed. He is active in humanitarian work under the guidance of late H.G. Geevarghese mar Osthathios metropolitan.Born (20 sep.1934) a small village in central kerala, Rambachen, as he is affectionately called, was from childhood attracted to helping the lowly and the downtrodden. After completing his schooling he joined the mission Training Centre of the orthodox church and later on moved to Puthuppady in Kerala to assist in establishing the st.Pauls Ashram and Balabhavan there. In 1958 he joined the orthodox seminary in Kottayam. After completing his training there and after being ordinated as Priest in 1962 he worked for several years in several parts of the country. Thus came the now famous Balagram at Yacharam near Hyderabad for healthy children of leprosy patients started off in 1985 with 5 children Balagram is now a home for over 100 children in the age group of 3 to 15 years. The children are admitted irrespective of caste, creed or religion and are provided food, shelter, and education free of cost.Other institutions followed with the opening of Balikagram in Pune in 1993 (for daughters of leprosy patients) Balagram in Itarsi in 1995 (for sons of leprosy pationts) and Kalahandi Development project in 1995 (for the development of Kalahandi District of Orissa) for his work among the downtrodden he was awarded the ‘Catholicate Award’ by the orthodox church. In 1994 Rev. Philip was ordained as ‘Ramban’. He took upon himself the work of rebuilding one of the villages in the Bhuj area on behalf of the orthodox church. His current humanitarian projects include an orphanage at Port Blair (Andaman Islands) and a Balabhavan at kottayam. Recently his biography written in malayalam entitled ”sneahathinte pathangaliloode” (In the Path of Love) was published.

I am deeply privileged and much blessed to be a part of this harvest festival which is being held on nov.14Th 2014. This festival is for a noble cause of the church that will benefit our community.I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all convenors, office bearers, managing committee, as well as each and every members of our parish who actively co-operated and tirelessly worked shoulder to shoulder in bringing this festival into fruition. Feasts and festivals are a feature of all major religions. Festivals are celebrated all around the world to mark a milestone in the life of the people and the celebrating community. They can be religious festivals, harvest festivals, festivals to mark a special occasion in history, celebration of age old customs and traditions etc. Be it any type of festival, they are always a means of bringing people and communities closer together. They are a means to keep in touch with our roots and remind us of the traditions and customs that are slowly being forgotten. Humans are creatures of time and space and it was God’s intention to meet with them in both spheres of their existence, in time and space. It is this concern with time that is addressed through the different festivals mentioned in the Old Testament. God met with His people in the sphere of time. That was not limited exclusively to the seventh day Sabbath. Other periods of time were selected by Him for worship, celebration and the rejoicing of His people in His presence.Society of Old Testament was an agrarian society. Thus traditionally harvest was an agricultural festival. There are three times designated for different Thanksgiving festivals in the Bible for each year. On these days, God commanded the people to bring a sheaf of the harvest prescribed in Leviticus 23. Each festival had a particular message to understood and passed on from one generation to the next. These harvest festivals were to be marked by both celebration and sharing. In Deuteronomy 14 (verses 22-29) God’s people are commanded to use the tithes of their produce to both rejoice and to give to the poor. Indeed, Verse 29 suggests that the success of future harvests depends on sharing with, and caring for, the poor and needy - a farming principle I don’t remember being taught at Reading, but one we should at this present time pay great heed to! This principle of sharing and caring extends, in fact, to the whole of creation. For example, a central plank of the Law, the Sabbath, was not only a day off for oneself and one’s workers, but also for one’s livestock, and, every seven years, a year off for the land itself. Indeed, one reason for Israel’s exile in Babylon was so that the land could enjoy the Sabbaths it was denied for nearly 500 years (Leviticus 26:33-35). There is an important second farming principle here - not just about fallow, but of restraint and respect, of responsible stewardship of the earth. This emphasis on caring for others and for the earth should not surprise us. We are called to be like God, whose “tender mercy is over all his works” (Psalm 145:9), or, as Psalm 104 tells us, who provides for all his creatures. And this was how it was in the beginning. God created Man to live in peaceful and loving relationship with Him and his fellow. Creation would provide human needs, but Man was to care for creation - God put the man in the garden to tend it and care for it (Genesis 2:15).Harvest Festival celebrates and sums up the essence of religious life and faith. As people of God let us offer God the first bit of what we have as an acknowledgement that all things come from him, by keeping the true spirit of Harvest through sharing and caring.May God Bless Us all.
