NEWS & HIGHLIGHTSSTREET DATE: OCTOBER 8, 2013

Our first release of the fall season features a powerhouse lineup of big-name artists and exciting projects. In classical recordings, harmonia mundi leads off the month with a surround-sound SACD of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion performed by René Jacobs (p.11). This new version is full of surprises and is certain to be one of the highlights of 2013. The Accent label keeps the focus on Bach favorites with key releases by La Petite Bande (p.5) and Collegium 1704 (p.3). The holiday season starts off swingin’ with Harmonie Ensemble/New York’s latest, which presents two versions of Tchaikovsky’s beloved Nutcracker Suite – the original and a jazz arrangement by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn (p.9). Advent is the focus of albums by the Choir of Merton College on Delphian and the Choir of Clare College on harmonia mundi (p.7). The stars are out at Hyperion, with a new disc from cellist Stephen Isserlis (p.15) and the label début of the Orlando Consort (p.13). Valery Gergiev brings his fire and intensity to the symphonies of Brahms in the first release of a new cycle for LSO Live (p.19). Violinist Midori is back, débuting on Onyx with an album of 20th Century sonatas (p.21). Orange Mountain presents an unreleased collaboration between The Raybeats, a progressive band from the 80s, and composer Philip Glass (p.23). In non-classical recordings, jazz pianist Harold López-Nussa returns with a killer set called New Day (p.27), and the famed Swingle Singers début on World Village with an album of vocal wizardry called Weather to Fly (p.29).

The début of Éditions Les Arts FlorissantsRecordings on the new label Éditions Les Arts Florissants will be a natural extension and faithful reflection of the group’s concert performances. Given William Christie’s long association with the music of Handel, it is appropriate that the inaugural release on his label would be the composer’s opera Belshazzar, a work whose subject is especially relevant today: the decline of a once glorious society and the ephemeral nature of Empire.

IMPORT Following their acclaimed recording of the Brandenburg Concertos, Sigiswald Kuijken leads his ensemble La Petite Bande in Bach’s four Orchestral Suites. Kuijken has chosen to use an unusually small ensemble. Alongside the harpsichord, the continuo group consists of two violones, a bass instrument significantly larger than the baroque cello and which produces a more resonant sound due to its larger body and thicker strings. What is especially remarkable about this recording, however, is the exclusive use of truly natural trumpets, without the auxiliary holes often present on instruments used in other period instrument versions.

IMPORTOne of the leading performers of his generation on historical keyboard instruments, Arthur Schoonderwoerd specializes in music of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. For his new set of Mozart’s complete Piano Sonatas, Schoonderwoerd has selected three different instruments, each of which provides a variety of tone colors and unexpected insights into familiar repertoire. The keyboards include a tangent-action piano based on Spaeth & Schmahl (ca. 1770), a fortepiano with uncovered hammerheads based on Johann Andreas Stein (ca. 1780) and an unfretted clavichord (model dating from ca. 1780). Schoonderwoerd’s witty and freely improvisatory performances display a greater freedom than many other historically accurate Mozart interpreters.

IMPORT Following two prize-winning recordings of works by Jan Dismas Zelenka highly praised by the international press, the Prague-based Collegium 1704 directed by Václav Luks turns to one of the great milestones in baroque choral literature: Johann Sebastian Bach’s B-minor Mass. This recording captivates listeners through the special charm, lightness and great virtuosity for which this ensemble is noted. Whereas a rather Protestant sobriety dominates other recordings of Bach’s great Mass, this recording is impressive for its more Catholic-influenced, Bohemian joy in music-making.

IMPORTFifty years after his victory in the International Liszt- Bartók Piano Competition, pianist and composer David Wilde – student of Solomon and of Nadia Boulanger – brings to the studio a lifetime’s experience with the music of Franz

Liszt. The diabolically difficult Mephisto Waltz No.1 is dispatched in a reading which overflows with personality and conviction, while Funérailles, too, is compellingly reimagined by an artist who cleaves to an earlier generation’s ideals of recreating both the self and the music in every inspired performance.

IMPORTJean Maillard’s life is shrouded in mystery, and his music is rarely heard today. Yet in his own time his works were both influential and widely known; indeed, the musicologist François Lesure held him to be one of the most important French

composers of his era. Who better, then, than Rory McCleery’s Marian Consort to give this composer’s rich and varied output its first dedicated recording? Their characteristically precise and yet impassioned performances bring out both the network of influence in which Maillard’s music participated its Josquin-esque pedigree, on successors such as Lassus and Palestrina, and its striking, individual beauty.

IMPORTThe beginning of Advent is celebrated with particular solemnity at Merton College. For its second recording, the school’s choir explores the musical riches that adorn this most special time in the church’s year, centering on a newly

commissioned sequence of Magnificat antiphons from seven leading composers. Founded in 2008, the new Choir of Merton College, Oxford is led by full time Director of Music Benjamin Nicholas as well as Reed Rubin Director of Music Peter Philips. The choir is rapidly emerging as a major force in collegiate choral music. This disc was recorded in the beautiful environs of Merton College Chapel, which has stood at the heart of the college as a place of worship for almost 750 years.

IMPORTThe familiar hymn Veni Emmanuel is emblematic of the Advent season – a period of reflection upon the meaning of Christ’s coming. Framing this program by the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, directed by Graham Ross, the

hymn paraphrases the great ‘O’ Antiphons (plainchant settings traditionally sung on the days leading up to Christmas), complemented here by later works echoing their rich imagery and symbolism.

IMPORTOn this recording, Steven Richman and his Harmonie Ensemble/New York swing in the holiday season with a twist, pairing Tchaikovsky’s original 1892 Nutcracker Suite with a 1960 jazz adaptation by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. The idea for combining the two Nutcrackers came about when trombonist Art Baron, who had played with Duke Ellington, introduced Richman to a 1960 recording of the Nutcracker Suite in Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s superb jazz arrangement. Richman loved it, and immediately decided he had to perform it side-by-side with Tchaikovsky’s original. This is the first time that the Ellington-Strayhorn Nutcracker has been recorded in over fifty years, and Richman’s fascinating and entertaining holiday pairing is the perfect follow-up to his critically praised album Gershwin By Grofé.

IMPORTThe composer Hanns Eisler’s life was one long exile, set against the backdrop of the artistic, technical and political revolutions of the 20th century. His journey spanned 1920s Vienna and the Berlin to emigration to the USA, then

back to Vienna after the defeat of Nazism and ultimately spending his final years in East Berlin. Distance, irony, and melancholy are the aesthetic corollaries that characterize the lieder presented here by baritone Matthias Goerne, their atmosphere often evoking the despair of those dark times. Also included is Eisler’s early Piano Sonata, played here by Thomas Larcher, a work which brought the young composer an admiration that has never dimmed since.

IMPORTWe owe these two masterpieces to the musical friendships Mozart made during his years in Vienna. The celestial beauties of the Clarinet Quintet were tailor-made for the great Anton Stadler, while the D minor String Quartet K421,

more severe in tone, is one of six Mozart dedicated to his ‘caro amico’ Joseph Haydn. This recording, which pairs clarinetist Jörg Widmann with the Arcanto Quartett, shows these artists’ affinity with the Mozartian repertoire.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDBach’s St. Matthew Passion has been at the heart of René Jacobs’s musical career since he was a child. From performances as a boy chorister in Ghent to countertenor solos in adulthood, Jacobs has been steeped in the work’s rich tradition for his whole life. In a defining moment that comes at the peak of his musical powers, Jacobs leads a cast of superb soloists, backed by the RIAS-Kammerchor and Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, in a definitive recording of the St. Matthew Passion. Offered in surround-sound, this deluxe, audiophile-quality set from harmonia mundi (which also includes a bonus ‘making-of ’ DVD) does full justice to a truly remarkable performance. Jacobs’s vision of the work focuses on the paradox of a drama that is at once intimate and theatrical. As always, there are interpretive surprises, but what will strike listeners most is the recording’s powerful emotional intensity.

IMPORTThe ground-breaking dance composition Tragédie by Olivier Dubois caused a sensation at the official Avignon Festival in 2012. In the work, Dubois submits the nude bodies of eighteen dancers to the implacable repetition of a mechanism that slowly gnaws away at their docility, pushing them toward an explosive liberation. Powerful and gut-wrenching, Tragédie pulls the audience headlong into a collective catharsis. An exemplary film by Tommy Pascal was created from performances at Le Centquatre in February 2013, and is presented here on DVD from harmonia mundi. This bold project benefits directly from a Leverhulme Trust project that will produce the first modern edition of Machaut’s complete poetry and music. Today, Machaut is considered the supreme representative of the Ars nova musical tradition that revolutionized composition and notation in that period. Livre dou Voir Dit (Book of the True Tale) is Machaut’s masterpiece. It relates a supposedly recent episode in the aging poet-composer’s life - his love affair with a lady some forty years his junior.

His innate feeling for the music is combined with prodigious scholarship, and his wonderful recordings in Hyperion’s French Song Edition have enjoyed the highest critical acclaim. Hyperion proudly presents Johnson’s latest effort, a set of the complete songs of Francis Poulenc released to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the composer’s death. The songs on each of the set’s discs are arranged to present four different journeys through the composer’s career. A special joy is the inclusion of a 1977 recording of Pierre Bernac narrating the well-known L’histoire de Babar. The set’s singers include Dame Felicity Lott, acclaimed as one of the foremost performers of Poulenc, as well as other stars from previous recordings in the series.

IMPORTThis recording presents two chamber masterpieces from nineteenth-century Russia, performed by Piers Lane and the Goldner String Quartet. Taneyev’s Piano Quintet in G minor is possibly the greatest work in the Russian

piano-chamber repertoire before Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet of 1940. Only the extravagance of its technical demands can explain its failure to establish itself in the standard repertoire. Arensky’s Piano Quintet is less monumental and less flamboyant, though not exactly short of fireworks, especially in the piano writing.

IMPORTThe Nash Ensemble presents a fascinating collection of chamber music by Frank Bridge. Bridge is best known through his most famous pupil, Benjamin Britten, who recognized his teacher’s genius and frequently programmed his

works. The Phantasy Piano Quartet displays Bridge’s early style at its most fluent. In his later works, represented here by the Cello Sonata and Violin Sonata, Bridge seemed influenced by contemporary trends in Europe, much to the dismay of critics at home, but Britten staunchly defended him. Also included are folk-song arrangements in which Bridge absorbs the material into his musical fabric, taking creative ownership of the melodies.

IMPORTThe spectacular organ (and massive acoustic) of St Paul’s Cathedral brings this collection of works by César Franck to glorious life, played with requisite virtuosity by Simon Johnson, the cathedral’s regular organist. He plays his own transcription of Franck’s Symphony in D minor, a troublesome work which was despised by critics at its premiere. Modern advances in console control enable Franck’s orchestration to be used as the outline for a detailed registration plan. The Symphonic Interlude is built on two main thematic ideas, the first a gloriously noble tune that Emmanuel Chabrier described as “the very soul of music,” and the second an energetic peal from the trombones, with responses and modulations from the brass and woodwind. The two are developed and combined ingeniously.

Also included are the Tragic Overture and the Haydn Variations, Brahms’s first orchestral piece and the first set of independent variations for orchestra by any composer. The epic first symphony, portraying dignity and grandeur, was ecstatically received at its premier in 1876, and Brahms was soon heralded as one of the great symphonic masters. His second, with its joyful melodies and pastoral beauty, portrays a more relaxed tone than its predecessor. The Tragic Overture, on the other hand, is turbulent and tormented, with a powerful and magnificent energy. IMPORTMatan Porat is a rising star of a new generation of pianist-composers. For this Mirare recording, Porat has created a visionary program centered around Scarlatti’s Sonata in D minor K32. The 24 pieces that follow - from Bach to Boulez

by way of Chopin and Debussy – all use the same motif, as if they were all variations on a theme. The result is a fascinating network of correspondences and interconnections that, strangely, inspire one to listen in an entirely new way.

IMPORTOnyx presents a special treat for both fans of Mikhail Pletnev and for piano enthusiasts in general. Recorded in single takes between sessions for other recordings, these performances allow us to eavesdrop on one of the great pianists of

our time, playing only for pleasure. Never before released, the performances and recordings here include a Beethoven sonata Pletnev has not recorded before, and a reading of the Bach/Busoni Chaconne recording that pre-dates his famous ‘Live from Carnegie Hall’ album. IMPORTAcclaimed Japanese-American violinist Midori makes her début on Onyx with this disc featuring three 20th-century violin sonatas. Ernest Bloch’s seldom heard Violin Sonata No.2 (subtitled Poéme mystique) is paired with Janácek’s Violin Sonata of 1914-21 and Shostakovich’s late G major sonata of 1968, a stark masterpiece composed for David Oistrakh and Sviatoslav Richter. After exploding on the scene as a child-prodigy, today Midori is recognized as an extraordinary performer, a devoted and gifted educator and an innovative community engagement activist, who was named a UN Messenger of Peace in 2007. Writing about these works Midori says, “These are three works that interweave the anxieties of the modern world condition with much hope for the future. In the end, the music fills us with a great feeling of warmth and compassion while not shying away from what must be confronted.”

IMPORTOn his third recording for Onyx, Augustin Dumay is featured both as conductor and violin soloist. The disc pairs the deliciously good-natured Serenade No.1 by Brahms, an early work full of great tunes, with early Beethoven – his popular Romances

for violin and orchestra – one of which may have been the second movement to his unfinished C major concerto WoO5 of the mid-1790s. Dumay shines in both roles, and the Kansai Philharmonic once again demonstrates their world-class skills and burnished tone.

DOMESTICPhilip Glass’s passion to unravel the mystery of what music really is has been present throughout his entire career. He has expressed this passion through his travels around the world, engaging with musicians of different ethnic and cultural

backgrounds and creating new music with them. In 2012, Glass journeyed into the mountains of Mexico to interact with the Wixarika people. Concert of the Sixth Sun gives us a glimpse into this culture’s unique world of mystery and spiritual beauty. Guitarist Roberto Carillo Cocío and violinist Daniel Medina de la Rosa are joined by the composer at the piano.

DOMESTIC“The Raybeats went into Green St. Recording on June 4, 1982 with Philip Glass, Michael Riesman, and Kurt Munkacsi without really knowing what to expect. We wouldn’t know what we had until thirty years later.” So begins the liner notes to The Raybeats – The Lost Philip Glass Sessions, a set of seven songs by the instrumental neo-surf rock combo from New York City that arose from the No Wave musical scene. The Raybeats’ original line-up consisted of Don Christensen (drums), Jody Harris (guitar), Pat Irwin (guitar, saxophone, organ) and George Scott III (bass). New York City in the late-1970s and early 1980s was a place where the cross pollination of very different artistic streams was limitless. Three of these tracks feature keyboard arranged and performed by Philip Glass, and performances by Michael Riesman and the rest of the production team. The songs include “Black Beach,” “And I Do Just What I Want,” “Pack of Camels” and a cover of the band’s classic track “Jack the Ripper.”

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDPraga presents a generous collection of concertos – immaculately remastered for SACD – that had a powerful impact on music in the pre-war years. Berg wrote his concerto in memory of Manon Gropius, the daughter of his muse Alma Mahler, who died tragically at age 19. Berg himself died shortly afterward of septicemia, making the concerto his last completed work and his own farewell piece. The Berg is paired with two works by Bartók, his Violin Concerto No.2 and Rhapsody No.2. The soloist for all three of these modern masterworks is the great Isaac Stern, accompanied by Leonard Bernstein leading the New York Philharmonic.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDOn this SACD from Praga, pianist Christoph Deluze is featured in a selection of the eclectic solo piano music of Erik Satie. The pairing is the composer’s ballet Parade in a recording from 1959

featuring Manuel Rosenthal. The work, premièred in May of 1917, brought together the painter Picasso, the dancer/choreographer Massine and composer Satie. It provoked a scandal comparable to that caused by The Rite of Spring four years earlier.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDPraga’s second SACD remastering featuring the great pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli focuses on the music of Beethoven. A monumental performance of the Piano Sonata

No.32 is followed by a similarly epic reading of the Piano Concerto No.5, accompanied by the Prague Symphony Orchestra led by Václav Smetacek. The disc includes a welcome bonus - encore performances of the four Images for solo piano by Claude Debussy.

IMPORTPianist Grete Sultan is one of the most extraordinary artists of the 20th century. Raised in a Jewish upper-class household in Berlin, she escaped Germany in 1941 after being banned from the concert stage. In New York, she met John Cage with whom she maintained an artistic collaboration for her whole life. Piano Seasons contains her solo recordings, some of them released for the first time. Wergo’s disc of music by composer Sergej Newski focuses on the primordial element of the voice. This recording includes a selection of his works performed by the Ensemble Mosaik and musikFabrik. Hans Zender’s Logos-Fragmente deals with the origins of humanity, its suffering and fate. This CD presents the first complete recording of these works.

IMPORTFile in: JazzWith roots in both Cuba and Europe, the thrilling young jazz pianist Harold López-Nussa displays an impressive maturity, which at merely thirty years of age will no doubt guarantee him a place amongst the greats. His latest album, New Day, clearly represents a watershed moment - the rising star refines his style and adds color to his artistic palette (listen for the Fender Rhodes keyboard), all to further charm his ever-growing audience across the globe. López-Nussa’s music is an intoxicating blend of lush melodies and quicksilver rhythms that owes as much to the distinguished school of Cuban piano as to the pianist’s innate virtuosity, which has been cultivated under the influence of such great jazzmen as Keith Jarrett and Wayne Shorter.

OCTOBER 2013JAZZ

IMPORTFile in: JazzFrom the banks of the Marne to the Mississippi Delta, the fiery and provocative music concocted by Dominique Cravic and Didier Roussin (working under the band name Les Primitifs du

Futur) was inspired by the years when pop music in Paris – the music played in dancehalls called bals musettes – was intermixed with the music of many cultures. The sound is traditional, with tints of jazz and beguine, rocked by gypsy and Italian accents. This release combines Cocktail d’Amour, the group’s first album (which established the band’s international reputation) with Bluestory & The New Blue 4, which features exclusive tracks taken from Cravic’s personal tapes.

IMPORTFile in: JazzRomane is not only one of the greatest French guitarists, he is also one of the most prolific composers of gypsy-jazz. But at heart he remains very much a musician whose desire is to

communicate and share his love of the genre. He has written music manuals and also founded his own music school, the Romane Swing Academy. Here he plays with his two sons, Pierre and Richard Manetti, both of whom are also superb guitarists. Guitar Family Connection contains all the musical virtues one expects from such a tightly-knit group. The way they listen to each other, alternately taking the lead with respect, shows how a family can play with one musical heart.

IMPORT File in: World/FranceLéo Ferré was a Franco-Monegasque composer, singer, musician and poet whose works mixed love and melancholy with moral anarchy. Chansons de Léo Ferré was originally released on Le Chant

du Monde in 1953. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Ferré’s death, the album has been meticulously remastered from the original tapes. This reissue stands as a fitting tribute to a man who laid the foundations for an art which, to date, has never been equaled.

IMPORT File in: World/TurkeyMortissa (a strong independent woman) is the debut album by Cigdem Aslan, featuring smyrneika/rebetiko songs in Greek and Turkish with musical roots in Anatolia. The music arose

in the turbulent times of the 1920s, from an underground scene of freedom-loving people – appropriate for the current political situation. An immigrant of a minority ethnic group and a female singer in a typically male genre, Aslan presents a fresh take on rebetiko. Having made her mark singing as a lead singer of the award-winning She’koyokh Klezmer Ensemble and as an opening act for Sezen Aksu and Yasmin Levy, Aslan is ready to take the stage as a star in her own right.

DOMESTIC File in: World/IndiaOn this recording, Ashwini Bhide Deshpande, world-renowned classical Hindustani vocalist in the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana tradition, pays loving tribute to the Maestro, Ravi Shankar.

This recording features four Ravi Shankar ragas, performed by Deshpande and overlaid with her lyrical bandishes, as well as one original raga. The selections, both intricate and soaring, feature the talents of Deshpande, who Shankar recognized during his lifetime as a vocalist blessed with both a beautiful voice and the scholarship to retain the spirit of the tradition. The album includes a Bonus track: an archival recording of Shankar performing UTSAV Mishra Gara.

DOMESTICFile in: World/IndiaBarry Phillips, Linda Burman-Hall and the Lux Musica Ensemble (with guest Debopriyo Sarkar) present a selection of daring, experimental compositions that reflect and re-

imagine the musical encounters between North Indian and British traditions during the late 1780s. Though very different creative languages – Indian music communicates emotion through pitch nuance and elaborate metric foundations, whereas European music relies on simpler meters and melodies in order to convey emotion through harmonic progressions – these two traditions have diversified each other significantly ever since the British Raj, with results that are as complicated as they are beautiful.
