NEWS & HIGHLIGHTSSTREET DATE: JULY 8, 2014

The extraordinary young violinist Alina Ibragimova is featured in a new recording for Hyperion of Prokofiev Violin Sonatas. Accompanied by pianist Steven Osborne, Ibragimova offers illuminating readings of these masterpieces of modern chamber music (p.11). Volume 63 of Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concerto series focuses on music by Godard. Howard Shelley is featured in scintillating performances of the composer’s two piano concertos (p.10). Conductor Iván Fischer takes on Bruckner’s most popular work - his Symphony No.7 - in a glorious new SACD recording for Channel Classics (p.5). Another world-renowned conductor, Valery Gergiev, adds a new gem to his Shostakovich discography with an new set for the Mariinsky label with the Symphonies Nos. 4, 5 & 6 (p.16). Delphian artists Ludus Baroque present a new recording of The Triumph of Time & Truth - a rarely-recorded oratorio by Handel (p.6) and choral ensemble Conspirare performs music of Robert Kyr on a new disc for harmonia mundi (p.7). Crossing boundaries between pop and classical, the King’s Men, composed of 15 choral scholars from King’s College, Cambridge, present After Hours - a disc of close-harmony covers of popular music hits (p.14). The Cumbia All Stars, acknowledged masters of the Peruvian Cumbia, are back with Tigres en Fuga, an album on the World Village label destined to revive interest in the genre (p.26). Finally, just in time for the World Cup (and in plenty of time for the Olympics) Chant du Monde offers a specially priced collection entitled Brazil! that features a who’s who of Brazilian music superstars (p.25).

Henry Mancini’s Music from Peter GunnPeter Gunn - the classic TV detective series (1958-61) - is best remembered today for Henry Mancini’s trend-setting score, which was inspired by West Coast Cool jazz. On Music for Peter Gunn, GRAMMY® nominated conductor Steven Richman and the sensational Harmonie Ensemble/New York, joined by ace old-school improvisers Lew Soloff (trumpet) and Lew Tabackin (sax), place their own stamp on Mancini’s iconic orchestrations.

IMPORT A bona-fide masterpiece of sacred music, Monteverdi’s Vespro della beata Vergine not only sealed the connection between Renaissance polyphony and the virtuoso opulence of the Baroque but also inspired composers across the

whole of Europe. Published three years after L’Orfeo, it is a work of startling modernity that features a rainbow of colors and a daring range of styles, and is a testimony to the genius of the composer. Leading the Cappella Mediterranea and the Chamber Choir of Namur, Leonardo García Alarcón infuses the work with a rare vitality, fervor and finesse.

IMPORTThis world première recording presents eighteen art songs (mélodies) by French composer Félicien David (1810–1876). Published in the 1830s, David’s mélodies were written in response to the keen interest shown at that time in simple pieces

for voice and piano, intended for performance in the homes of the aristocracy and the middle classes. He was often referred to as ‘the French Schubert,’ and indeed the influence of the Viennese composer can be felt in some of his pieces. On this disc from Aparté, baritone Tassis Christoyannis and pianist Thanassis Apostolopoulos contribute to the rediscovery of one of the major composers of the nineteenth century.

IMPORTPossibly the most gifted of Johann Sebastian Bach’s sons, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was highly admired in his own century and stands out today as a brilliant and highly original composer. He revolutionized established principles of form, harmony and rhythm. His compositions are very personal and very free, with sudden changes of key, uneven phrase lengths and strong and unexpected contrasts, so that his music constantly holds the listener’s attention. This fascinating collection of his revolutionary music, released to celebrate the tercentenary of C.P.E. Bach’s birth, features cellist Ophélie Gaillard and the Pulcinella Orchestra.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDUntil late in his career, Bruckner was understood and admired only within a small circle - a handful of advocates of his music, both pupils and Wagnerites. As he was composing his Symphony No.7, Bruckner heard news of the death of his musical idol Richard Wagner. He immediately decided to dedicate the work to his remembrance. The seventh symphony marked Bruckner’s breakthrough into widespread public acceptance, and since its première it has remained the most frequently performed of his nine symphonies. This gut-wrenching performance by Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra features the finest in recorded sound.

IMPORT On their third disc for Delphian, Ludus Baroque and five stellar soloists bring to life Handel’s rarely-heard final oratorio The Triumph of Time and Truth - a remarkable Protestant re-casting of a work written fifty years earlier to a text by the young composer’s Roman patron Cardinal Pamphilj. The work, neglected by centuries of scholarship on account of its hybrid origins, here proves an extraordinary feast of riches, and the ideal vehicle for Richard Neville-Towle’s carefully assembled cast of exceptional soloists, vigorous, intelligent chorus and an orchestra made up from some of the UK’s leading period instrumentalists.

IMPORTHoward Shelley directs the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra from the piano in this latest volume of The Romantic Piano Concerto series. We have reached Volume 63 and the works of French composer Benjamin Godard, a figure who is almost totally forgotten today. He is described by Jeremy Nicholas in his booklet note as, “a composer who combines the sentimental melodic appeal of Massenet with the fecundity and technical facility of Saint-Saëns.” Among Godard’s oeuvre, much of the enormous amount of music he produced followed in the tradition of Mendelssohn and Schumann. With the emergence of more innovative composers, Godard’s conservative idiom meant his reputation faded before his early death in 1895. However, in the three works presented here his writing for the piano exceeds the technical range of his two idols, and is often reminiscent of the bravura demands found in the concertos of Liszt and Rubinstein.

IMPORTHyperion is delighted to present a special collaboration — already an extraordinary force on the concert platform — in its first appearance on record. Alina Ibragimova and Steven Osborne are musicians of searing, uncompromising intelligence and intense feeling. In his works for the violin, Prokofiev produced some of his most personal and expressive music. Both of his Violin Sonatas were written for David Oistrakh. The first was begun against the backdrop of Stalin’s Great Terror, and one senses that he drew his inspiration from the uncharacteristically dark wells of fear, despair and bereavement which were the lot of Prokofiev and his contemporaries. The Violin Sonata No.2 is of a very different character — generally sunny and carefree, though still with occasional fleeting shadows. In its original form it was a Flute Sonata, Op 94, which Prokofiev had completed in 1943. At David Oistrakh’s suggestion and with his assistance, Prokofiev transcribed the work.

IMPORTHoward Shelley, acclaimed as the living master of early Romantic piano music, presents the second instalment of his six-volume set of Mendelssohn’s complete solo piano music

— perhaps the least well-known part of the composer’s repertoire. The first volume was praised for Shelley’s “immaculate, lightly-pedaled brilliance, unfailing stylistic assurance, warmth and flexibility” (Gramophone). This second volume includes the Rondo capriccioso (a favorite virtuoso concert piece of the nineteenth century), the three-movement Scottish flavored Fantasia and two books of the Songs Without Words.

IMPORT This important reissue brings together all forty-five of the songs composed by Frank Bridge. The program is presented generally along chronological lines, and although the songs were written over two decades there is a remarkable

consistency of style. A good number of the texts will be familiar from the songs of, say, Quilter or Finzi, but many more show Bridge’s enthusiasm for unearthing rather less well-known literary subject matter. The performers include soprano Janice Watson, mezzo Louise Winter, tenor Jamie MacDougall and baritone Gerald Finley. Roger Vignoles provides his usual rock-solid and musically stellar accompaniment.

a twenty-eight year period, inspired by his friendship with the great violinist Joseph Joachim. The first two quartets are serious, big-boned works that show Stanford’s mastery of the idiom. On this mid-priced Helios series reissue, the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet plays with a rare sensitivity and a natural eloquence. Also included is the Horn Fantasy — a dramatic, compelling and flawlessly written work (possibly composed as a tribute to Mozart), superbly played by Stephen Stirling.

Orchestra led by Martyn Brabbins. Following the outbreak of the First World War, Coles was sent to the trenches in France. He continued to compose, including the particularly poignant work Behind the Lines. Coles was killed in April of 1918 during a heroic attempt to rescue some wounded comrades. Thanks to the persistence and research of his daughter, his manuscripts, some still embedded with shrapnel, have been painstakingly pieced together to create this first recording of his compositions.

IMPORTThe King’s Men are a close harmony group made up of fifteen choral scholars from the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge. The group has previously released recordings for the Signum label focusing on folk and classical repertoire, but the more ‘popular’ side was not documented until now. The album includes arrangements of popular music tracks such as “Call Me Maybe,” “Forget You” and “I Want you Back” as well as classics like “Old Man River” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” Listeners are sure to delight in the purity of the a cappella voices and diverse songs selected by the group. The majority of the album was recorded live in a semicircle and without digital systems. This has ensured a purity of sound, ideal for the more complex harmonies in some of the songs, and provided an intimacy to the recording.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDValery Gergiev continues his acclaimed Shostakovich symphony cycle with his sixth release, a two SACD set featuring Symphonies Nos.4, 5 & 6. Shostakovich’s symphonies are often emotionally powerful and the three symphonies performed here are a particularly compelling and riveting combination. Without doubt, the tortuous difficulty of adhering to vaguely articulated political dictates shaped the evolution of Shostakovich’s music. Yet it is his sophisticated employment of musical codes that enabled him to maintain his creative integrity. These works are a superb illustration of his ability to toe the line deftly between political acclamation and condemnation.

IMPORTPolish composer Franz Xaver Scharwenka was one of the most important and popular composer pianists of the late 19th century. He had a major career as a soloist, and toured the USA a total of 26 times. His four piano concertos were once cornerstones of the repertoire, admired by both Liszt and Tchaikovsky. For his third recording on Onyx Classics, pianist Joseph Moog performs Scharwenka’s Piano Sonata Op.36 and Tonbilder Op.38, pairing them with Tchaikovsky’s Piano Sonata Op.37, Romance Op.5 and Aveu passionné. Moog is fast becoming recognized as one of the most gifted and inquiring of the younger generation of pianists.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDItalian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli was a legend in his own lifetime - renowned for his beautifully polished sound, clarity of execution, strict fidelity to the composer and

awareness of harmonic subtleties. Everything was planned to the highest degree of musical and technical perfection. On this third volume in Praga’s series of Michelangeli recordings remastered for SACD, the great pianist is heard in solo works by Chopin and Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.4, accompanied by The Philharmonia led by Ettore Gracis.

IMPORTWith this release, Tahra brings to an end a musical adventure that started 22 years ago. Begun as a label dedicated to restoring the finest historic recordings of great German conductors, it is fitting that this final disc should include examples

of some of the finest work the label has done. Wilhelm Furtwängler leads the Berlin Philharmonic and Vienna Philharmonic in excerpts from Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 5 & 7, Hermann Scherchen leads the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie in Schubert’s Symphony No.8 and Hermann Abendroth leads the Staatskapelle Schwerin in excerpts from a previously unissued recording of Bruckner’s Symphony No.7.

IMPORT Born in Regensburg in 1979, Leopold Hurt studied composition at Hamburg University of Music and zither and period performance practice at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich. His oeuvre covers the entire spectrum

of instrumental and vocal music, with the zither featuring prominently. This Wergo release offers a portrait of Hurt’s output with two of the four pieces focusing on an area that has been mostly neglected – the traditional music of the Alpine area. With their varying instrumentations – from string trio (Mondrian Ensemble Basel) to orchestral work (Philharmoniker Hamburg) – these works provide a fascinating overview.

IMPORT The latest reissue in Wergo’s studio reihe series is very special. This recording, featuring soprano Helga Pilarczyk and conductor Pierre Boulez performing Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire, was the first release on the newly founded Wergo label in

1962, and it was the recording that laid the foundation of the label’s decades-long story of success. Unavailable on CD up to now, this highlight from Wergo’s early days has been remastered for CD to offer the finest sound quality.

JULY 2014JAZZ

DOMESTICFile in: JazzOne of the giants of the alto saxophone, Johnny Hodges was perhaps the most important soloist and sideman in Duke Ellington’s orchestra from 1928 up to Hodges’s death in 1970. The self-taught player made many solo forays during his long career - one of his ‘50s outfits included a young John Coltrane - but history remembers Hodges for his virtuosic sidemanship, particularly his sensitive rendering of ballads. Originally released in 1958, Blues A-Plenty is released here on SACD for the first time. The Soul of Ben Webster is a killer session that teams up the matchless jazz tenor sax master with fellow tenorist Harold Ashby and trumpeter Art Farmer in a soulful program of originals. Originally released in 1958 on Verve, this SACD remastering by Analogue Productions presents this recording in the best possible audio quality. Recorded during the last decade of his long tenure with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Hodges with Strayhorn and the Orchestra finds the great alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges’s musical gifts not only intact but stronger than ever. Featuring the Ellington band - with Jimmy Jones on piano and Billy Strayhorn as bandleader and arranger - it is a fascinating program of Ellington remakes, including some of the orchestra’s most familiar numbers.

IMPORT File in: JazzAn icon in the history of jazz, Jaki Byard was Art Tatum, Earl Hines, Bud Powell, Cecil Taylor and Bill Evans all rolled up in one. Yet, like these fellow icons, he was his own uncompromising,

unique, living entity. Byard isn’t a household name, but most likely his low profile is the result of an irresistible need to constantly reinvent himself, the sure sign of the consummate artist. The Late Show is the third installment of HighNote’s Jaki Byard retrospective. The selections themselves contain a few signature Byard specialities and a couple of songs not currently available by the pianist. HighNote’s collection of beautifully restored tapes leaves us with a rich history of Byard’s music, allowing us to experience the intense struggle of a dedicated artist to keep his essence alive while still making us laugh with him along life’s corridor.

IMPORT File in: JazzBarbara Morrison has been featured on over twenty recordings, featuring repertoire ranging from traditional jazz and blues to gospel and pop. Her powerful voice, with its two-and-a-half-

octave range, allows her to belt out down-home, soul-stirring blues in a manner that places her firmly in the tradition of Etta Jones, Helen Humes, Irene Reid, and Dinah Washington. Her impassioned renditions of favorite torch songs reveal a consummate musicianship and a firm grasp of a song’s deepest meaning. On I Love You, Yes I Do, Morrison is once again partnered with the soulful tenor saxophone of Houston Person, who brings his own unique brand of bluesy exuberance to the proceedings.
