Violinist Alina Ibragimova and pianist Cédric Tiberghien first met in 2005 as members of the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme. From the outset, a rare interpretive and personal rapport developed. This month's Hyperion release of a two-disc set of Violin Sonatas by Mozart further confirms their status as one of the finest duos on stage today. Sonatas are also the focus of Canadian violinist James Ehnes's new release for Onyx, which includes works by Elgar, Debussy & Respighi, and duo violinists Angela and Jennifer Chun perform music of Glass and Muhly on a new harmonia mundi release. Star British pianists Stephen Hough and Paul Lewis are the soloists in recordings of concertos by Dvorák, Schumann and Brahms, and harmonia mundi's trilogy of Schumann concertos concludes with Jean-Guihen Queyras's performance of the composer's Cello Concerto. Onyx embarks a complete cycle of the symphonies of Vaughan Williams with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic led by Andrew Manze. Choral fans will not want to miss Stephen Layton's Hyperion disc of Howells's Collegium Regale sung by the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge. Not surprisingly, harmonia mundi's new recording of Bach's immortal St. John Passion is but the latest in a string of triumphs by maestro René Jacobs. The label also welcomes the return of William Christie and his ensemble Les Arts Florissants with a new title and a selection of key back catalog reissues. Jazz label Edition offers two key releases in April. Trumpeter Gerard Presencer, famous from his cameo on US3's "Cantaloop (flip fantasia)," is accompanied by the Danish Radio Big Band on his new album Groove Travels. Parallax, the latest from jazz ensemble Phronesis, continues their run of highly successful titles for Edition.

Henk Neven Journeys to spainDutch baritone Henk Neven and pianist Hans Eijsackers join forces for their third Onyx Classics recording, entitled Rêves d'Espagne (Dreams of Spain). This superbly crafted recital journeys to Spain for a program that features Don Quixote songs from Ibert and Ravel, a selection of songs by 15th & 16th century Spanish composers and Shostakovich's rare 6 Spanish Songs. Pianist Eijsackers has two moments to shine in the Spanish sun as well with solo pieces by Albéniz and Granados.

LEYLA MCCALLA DEBUTS ON JAZZ VILLAGEA Day For the Hunter, A Day for the Prey, the follow up to singer and multi-instrumentalist Leyla McCalla's critically acclaimed Vari-Colored Songs, is a musical exploration of two cultural identities — one sprouted in the United States and the other firmly planted in Haiti. McCalla alternates between cello, tenor banjo and guitar, and sings in English, French and Haitian Creole. This live recording from Mozart Week features violinist Esther Hoppe performing on Mozart's Costa Violin. Made by Pietro Antonio Dalla Costa in 1764, the instrument was donated to the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation in 2013. It is believed that Mozart owned and played the violin during the years he lived in Vienna, which makes these performances of his Violin Sonatas K454 & 526 and the Andante & Fugue K402 a historical treat.

The music on this disc has a very specific location and time at its heart: Paris in 1907. The Englishman Ralph Vaughan-Williams and Spaniard Manuel de Falla both came to study there and both were accepted into Maurice Ravel’s close circle of friends (Vaughan-Williams as Ravel’s student). This program is built around the tantalizing thought that these three very different artists were all in Paris at the same time discussing music and inspiring one another. All works are beautifully performed by the Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble.

This final installment in harmonia mundi's Schumann trilogy pairs the composer's Cello Concerto with his first Piano Trio. Despite being championed by Clara Schumann, the concerto was not premièred until after the composer’s death. The hugely expressive work, by turns poetic and stormy, exemplifies Schumann's interest in pushing boundaries in compositional forms and structures. The first two of his three Piano Trios is youthful in spirit, with rich tone colors and singing melodies. The soloists here, as with the other volumes, are cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, violinist Isabelle Faust and pianist Alexander Melnikov. Following his highly acclaimed surveys of the piano works of Beethoven and Schubert, British pianist Paul Lewis turns to the romantic period and Brahms’s mighty D minor Piano Concerto. Although Shostakovich entrusted the world premières of his String Quartets to the Beethoven Quartet, it was the Borodin Quartet that earned the works worldwide acclaim. This release (the first in a series) is taken from the Borodin's first stereo recordings of the quartets, recorded for Melodiya in the late 60s and early 70s. Carefully remastered as part of Praga's Genuine Stereo Lab series, this disc features the first, second and fifth quartets.
Pierre Boulez (1925-2016) started conducting in order to perform his own music and to champion major 20th century composers such as Debussy, Bartók and Stravinsky. He ascended to great heights in the classical world performing the grand repertoire of Wagner and Mahler (but avoiding Brahms). These recordings offer a foretaste of his conducting genius and allow us to remember a great artist the world recently lost.
Sibelius's Symphony No.3 was composed in 1907. It is the link between the romantic intensity of his first two symphonies and the more cold complexity of his later symphonies. Symphony No.7 was completed in 1924 and is notable for having only one movement. The Swan of Tuonela is a tone poem based on the Kalevala epic of Finnish mythology. The Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra and Yevgeny Mravinsky pair these with Debussy's Nocturnes Nos.1 & 2.

Paganini's Caprice No.24 was written as a showcase for the composer's own prodigious talents. It inspired many other composers to write variations on its theme. Featured here are a selection of masterpieces based on Paganini's famous theme – for solo piano by Liszt and Brahms, for violin and piano by Szymanowski, for piano and orchestra by Lutoslawski and Rachmaninov and for symphony orchestra by Blacher. Artists include violinist Michael Rabin and pianist Artur Rubinstein.
At the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow during the height of the Cold War, the gold medal went to the young American pianist Van Cliburn. "Is he the best?" Khrushchev asked a nervous jury in 1958, "Then give him the prize." On his return to New York, he was carried aloft through the streets in triumph. Conductor Kyrill Kondrashin, who is no stranger to such acclaim, met with a similar success when he came to New York in 1962. The two join forces on this disc for Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.3.

Shostakovich's Symphony No.5 was given its première in 1937. It was outwardly in compliance with the ruling party, but the public heard a message of suffering in Shostakovich's masterpiece and it was an unprecedented triumph. Symphony No.12 "The Year 1917" was dedicated to Vladimir Lenin. Both works were premiered by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Yevgeny Mravinsky. The performances featured here were recorded in December 1965.
