CONGRATULATIONS DALE CHMIELEWSKI!

Friday Mixers Bowling out of Spruce Creek

North had three bowlers participate in an

event called “Red Cup Tournament” held at

AMF Galaxy West Lanes on April 28th.

There were numerous bowlers from different

leagues that participated in the event. Dale

Chmielewski, Wayne Hoeppner, and Dan

Muldowney represented Spruce Creek North

Friday Mixers. When the pins stopped fal-

ling, Dale Chmielewski won the tournament.

Dale bowled a 680 series. He bowled a 266

in his third game. The residents of Spruce

Creek are proud of one of their own. Con-

gratulations Dale. A job well done.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU!

I would like to give a special thank you to the ladies who

participated and performed an amazing job at modeling

for our annual BonWorth Fashion Show.

Peg Gallagher, Linda Lerch, Brenda Stroh, Carol

Arndt, Eileen Shorten and Tess McAfee.

Another thank you is in order to the people behind the scenes who always rise to the occa-

sion, but who often go unnoticed.

Ken Stroh, Dale & Blenda Chmielewski, Ken Bevill, Angie Nunley, Karen Bombardier,

Cindy Hutchins and Judy Travers.

It is with residents like these who continually help make events successful and are greatly

appreciated.

My deepest thanks to all named above and to anyone who may have been overlooked un-

intentionally.

Gigi Derolf

HUMAN TOUCH COMMITTEE MEDICAL MOBILITY MONTHLY REPORT

Not much activity this month, which is a good sign, but I do want to thank two residents who have generously donated the following equipment. Roger Patrice: Transporter Chair, two Rollators, five walking frames, one very large commode and one shower seat. Barb Yarock: One commode, one walker, one rollator and one transport chair. Their generosity is very much appreciated and really this is how it all started, and why we have such a large and varied inventory. Most of it is new or nearly new. If anyone has equipment they are no longer using, please call me and I will pick it up. Please take extreme care when using a ladder. DO NOT DO IT ALONE! HIRE A PRO! Thank You! COYOTES IN FLORIDA

Coyotes can be curious but are also timid and generally run away if challenged. Just re-member that any wild animal will protect itself or its young. Never initiate a close encounter with a coyote. If a coyote approaches too closely, immediately act aggressively toward the coyote. Wave your arms, throw things like stones and shout at the coyote. Where coyote encounters occur regularly, walk pets at other times besides nighttime hours, dusk and dawn. Carry something that will make noise or scare the animal, such as a small air horn, solid walking stick, or golf club. Coyotes are not dangerous. There have been very few reported cases of Eastern coyotes biting people. The coyote’s innate fear of humans tends to keep them from getting too close. Coyotes have been in Florida for many years and will continue to make their homes around the state. People like to feed animals. However, by providing a “free lunch” for coyotes, you elimi-nate their natural fear of humans and increase their populations. Remember … a fed coyote causes problems. Keep’em wild! Coyotes are most commonly attracted to neighborhoods by unsecure garbage, pet food, and bird seed; most interactions can be reduced if residents remove and secure trash. Coyotes are attracted to free roaming pets. If contact occurs between your pet and wild-life, do not try to physically separate your pet and the animal.

If you are experiencing bear or coyote problems, Please contact the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at

888-404-3922 or 352-732-1225

LESSONS LEARNED By Colin Holloway

My wife, Jan, died on January 27th, 2019 having been in medical are since Nove-

mer 24th, 2018 when I called 911, a total of 65 days.

Initially, she was taken to West Marion Hospital and from there to TimberRidge

Rehab, then finaly to Legacy House Hospice.

I visited her every day and because of my broken back, I became totally dependent

on friends and neighbors for transportation. Lyle Bailey became my personal 24/7 chauf-

feur. Cindy Hutchins became my Spruce Creek 911, because she knows everyone’s phone

number. She also drove me from time to time, as did Gigi Derolf and Blenda Chmielewski

and others whose names I can’t recall, until Jan’s 2 daughters arrived.

Lesson 1. I learned was always accept help when it is offered. My first reaction

was to turn it down not wanting to impose. That is wrong, always accept it even if you

don’t use it. I found that all offers made to me were genuine, because everyone I turned

down told me off!

Later, Lesson 2. Do not argue with paramedics! I didn’t, Jan did. She refused to

go to the hospital until they gently convinced her that she was very sick. Jan had Hepa-

titis C, which was given to her in 1981 during a blood transfusion in Los Angeles. She

lived with it slowly destroying her liver, until it eventually killed her. This caused her to

hallucinate and that is what she was doing that night. Those 2 young men were absolutely

marvelous. She was sitting on the toilet stark naked and had been for hours. They cov-

ered her up, calmed her down, and gently put her on the gurney. Priceless!

Lesson 3. Do not expect to get any information from the doctors, especially the

Hospitalists, because they are always too busy giving “Tests”. They subjected poor Jan

to 17 tests on Christmas Day and never told me the results of any of them. The best

people to ask anything of, are the night nurses. They spend more time with their patients

and get to know them and care more. The night nurses will tell you everything they know

in language you understand. I never once heard a single doctor mention the word “dying”,

although she was and they knew it.

Lesson 4. Make sure you have the best insurance you can afford. Fortunately, I

did.

Lesson 5. Please be advised that Hospice is not free. Jan was in Legacy House for

27 days, while Medicare paid $9,094.06. I was billed $2,736, which I happily paid. Ap-

parently, it has something to do with the category you are allotted by the doctor. Having

said that, I think that Hospice was absolutely wonderful and the nurses were outstanding.

Nothing was too much trouble. Jan even told me towards the end that she was happy

there. They kept her beautifully clean with clean fresh clothing every day and pretty

bedspreads. They really spoiled her, better than I could have done at home. Her 2

daughters slept in the room with her most nights. I could not as my back did not like the

bed.

Lessons Learned (continued)

This was, and still is, a pretty harrowing experience for me. Our mar-

riage was not particularly long, only 34 years, but it was the third try for

both of us and it was a very happy experience. I shall always miss her.

Lesson 6. I thoroughly recommend the National Cremation Soci-

ety. Jan and I signed up in 1990 soon after we arrived here and I think it

covers you anywhere. As I recall, the price was reasonable. Legacy House

already had our cards, so when Jan died, they called the National Cremation

Society and they took over. I never saw anyone from start to finish. I had

to do nothing, go nowhere. We wanted it simple, nothing fancy. Anyway, Na-

tional Cremation Society cremated her, put the ashes in a sealed metal con-

tainer, and had it delivered here to my door by USPS Special Delivery. I

bought a nice cedar wood box on the web, put their container in it, and it all

sits nicely under a vase of flowers on my fireplace and I talk to her all the

time. I get a lot of comfort from it.

The main lesson I have learned from all this is that I could not have

survived without the help and support of so many wonderful “Spruce Creekers”.

God Bless each and every one of you!

The Spruce Creek North Resident Association will be purchasing new benches for the Shuffle Board Courts! I still have no answer on when the courts will be resurfaced and repaired. The pool is warming up and feels great! Please come and enjoy! The Horse-shoe Pits are being worked on and getting back into playing shape. Corn Hole Boards are in the Clubhouse Office and anyone can sign them out. They need to be returned the next day or on Monday if you have them over the weekend. They are a lot of fun! Have a great month. Wayne Harmon, Director of Recreation ___________________________________________________
