Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, June 8 th 2019 Race 1 #3 Classic Beauty #4 Pioneerof New York #5 I Wonder #2 Frost Dance #3 CLASSIC BEAUTY kicked off the season on May 5, finishing third in a sprint when making her first start off of a 10 month layoff. She stretches out to a route for the first time; the dam was exclusively a route horse. #4 PIONEEROF NEW YORK finished second behind impressive first-timer Painting on May 12, getting a covered up trip racing into a backstretch headwind. The mare's lone win came at a route. #5 I WONDER got a wide stalking trip, made the lead then flattened out in the final furlong on May 12. The race has produced two next out winners; she is the only runner in the field to break a 60 Beyer. #2 FROST DANCE showed finishing interest in all three of her juvenile starts. She removes blinkers after a second place finish when adding them in her final start, possibly signifying maturity and improved training without them. Race 2 #2 Lilibet #7 Queen Andher Court #4 Accolades Galore #5 Londonderry #2 LILIBET was second in a soft bunch on April 27, then finished third when favoured on May 18. She stretches out to a route which seems to be her preferred trip. #7 QUEEN ANDHER COURT ran a decent fourth in a turf route two weeks ago. She has been on the edges consistently and fits with this group. #4 ACCOLADES GALORE has closed very well in both starts so far this year. She stretches out to a route for the first time but may not get a ton of pace to close into. #5 LONDONDERRY ran her best race in the final start of her juvenile season, finishing third against Ontario Sired maiden special weight company around two turns. She goes straight into a route for her first start of the season. Race 3 #7 Nevaeh's Dream #5 Sailing Home #2 Executive Sight #3 Count Forest #7 NEVAEH'S DREAM was a front end winner on opening day in a race that produced two next-out winners, then failed to show speed in a solid group on May 17 and still finished up well to be fourth. He should be able to get tactical position from the outside. #5 SAILING HOME returned from nearly a two year layoff with an easy non-winners of two win. He placed in several Stakes as a two and three year old and is likely the most talented horse in this race. #2 EXECUTIVE SIGHT had a wide trip when finishing third in her 2019 debut. He is a consistent check-earner at this level. #3 COUNT FOREST was an easy front end winner against $15,000 foes on May 4. His chances likely hang on how much speed Nevaeh's Dream and/or Sailing Home end up showing. Race 4 #8 Malibu Dawn #4 Dream On Jilly #9 Patton's Girl #1 Hassah (GB) #8 MALIBU DAWN was a well beaten fifth in the Fury Stakes, which has produced a pair of the favourites in the Woodbine Oaks. Her turf start at Gulfstream on January 31 was better than it looks on paper and she catches what might prove to be a manageable group. #4 DREAM ON JILLY disappointed in her return to the races when facing starter/optional claiming foes at Gulfstream on April 19, but had previously finished second in a turf Stake behind a foe who has since won two more Stakes events. Turf sprinting may prove to be her best fit. #9 PATTON'S GIRL beat $20,000 non-winners of three on August 31 before finishing second in a very tough starter/optional claiming race then third in a first level allowance. Her speed figures fit well here. #1 HASSAH (GB) closed well to be second when facing a good group of $25,000 mares on May 24. She could outrun her odds again. Race 5 #3 Niigon's Vision Best Bet #12 Princess Fabiana #4 Take It Easy #7 Pink Scribbles #3 NIIGON'S VISION raced into a headwind while part of a hotly contested pace in her May 12 debut, was run down by a foe with a perfect trip and was clearly the best of any of the speed horses. If she gets to the front today she has every right to improve. #12 PRINCESS FABIANA drops in for $40,000 for her three year old debut. She was a factor in her three sprint starts against maiden special weight company last year, although none of those were likely in the toughest groups for the level. #4 TAKE IT EASY closed well to be second on debut, racing wide on an outside favouring track but beaten by a horse who also was well off of the rail. A better break could get her in good position. #7 PINK SCRIBBLES has run well to be second in both of her starts this season. She has only run one poor race in her career, when dueling in a contested pace and racing very wide. Race 6 #2 Pearl Heist #9 Monkeys Uncle #13 Sister Peacock #1 Lady Grace #2 PEARL HEIST went two-for-two as a juvenile, including a nice group of first level allowance colts which included recent Bold Ruckus Stakes winner Souper Hot. Her lone sibling is a two-time turf winner. #9 MONKEYS UNCLE was a closing winner of the Selima Stakes, a turf

He is a consistent check-earner at this level. #3

COUNT FOREST was an easy front end winner against $15,000 foes on May 4.

Her speed figures fit well here. #1 HASSAH (GB) closed well to be second when facing a good group of $25,000 mares on May 24. She could outrun her odds again.

Race 5 #3 Niigon's Vision – Best Bet #12 Princess Fabiana #4 Take It Easy #7 Pink Scribbles #3 NIIGON'S VISION raced into a headwind while part of a hotly contested pace in her May 12 debut, was run down by a foe with a perfect trip and was clearly the best of any of the speed horses.

Page 2: Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, June 8th …...Jun 08, 2019  · able to be competitive in the Coronation Futurity. Race 9 #8 Hastalavistababy #4 Desert Ride #3

sprint that produced three next out winners, including Grade 3 winner Elsa. She should have plenty of pace to close into here. #13 SISTER PEACOCK used her rapid gate speed to secure the lead in the Star Shoot and was never threatened in that win. The wide post will be her biggest hurdle. #1 LADY GRACE had a wide stalking trip on a rail favouring day when breaking her maiden on April 20. She has been in the hunt on turf south of border but gets in much tougher today.

Race 7 #5 Makemineamanhattan #3 Epilogue #7 Gunner Ben #1 Majestic Fever #5 MAKEMINEAMANHATTAN showed a lot of improvement second time out this season, dueling for the lead on a track that was favourable to outside closers. He has potential to be the lone speed here. #3 EPILOGUE came off of the layoff with a very good second in front of several of today's foes. His form in 2018 was inconsistent but had several races that fit very well with this group. #7 GUNNER BEN broke poorly and was hard ridden last time out, managing to make up some ground in the stretch. A better break could put him in more threatening position. #1 MAJESTIC FEVER was chasing out wide when finishing third last time out. Although he is searching for his first win since October 2017, he is on the edges more times than not.

Race 8 #8 Jammin Still #1 Federal Law #5 Dun Drum #6 Moon Swings #8 JAMMIN STILL kicked off the season against first level allowance three year olds, getting a good trip until the stretch where he had to check, had no path, then angled out and was full of run for the final 1/16. A better trip should make him very dangerous. #1 FEDERAL LAW pushed his way through traffic and got up to win the Queenston. His run in the Wando is likely forgivable as racing on the front end does not seem to be his preferred style. #5 DUN DRUM was a good third in the Queenston to kick off the season. His lone route race was a fairly easy win in the Kingarvie last year. He should be able to get a midpack trip. #6 MOON SWINGS was a decent third in a solid group of maidens to kick off the season on May 5. When racing around two turns last year he was able to be competitive in the Coronation Futurity.

Race 9 #8 Hastalavistababy #4 Desert Ride #3 Preferred Guest #9 Bold Script #8 HASTALAVISTABABY closed very well to be second in the Fury, her 2019 debut. She was a very impressive winner at a mile on turf when breaking her maiden and just missed in last year's Ontario Lassie; if the pace is

honest she should make her presence felt in the stretch. #4 DESERT RIDE is two for three so far in her career, racing exclusively around two turns on the turf. The third place finisher of her last start came back to win at Churchill with a 75 Beyer; the mare was a synthetic winner. #3 PREFERRED GUEST was not able to threaten a lone speed winner when sprinting on April 27, but came back with a much improved run in the Selene on May 18. Like many other serious contenders here, the more pace the better for her. #9 BOLD SCRIPT was disappointing as the even money favourite in the Selene. Her run in the Davona Dale at Gulfstream was forgivable as she had a poor trip, but if she can return to her juvenile form she will be dangerous.

Race 10 #9 Flashymeister #7 Encierro #12 Into Temptation #6 Warrior's Heart #9 FLASHYMEISTER ran easily his best race on turf when finishing second behind a stablemate who is a contender in today's Plate Trial. The third place finisher returned to win two in a row. #7 ENCIERRO settled at the back and made up ground when finishing sixth in his 2019 debut in a Tapeta sprint. He makes his first start on turf today; the mare has yet to have a turf starter. #12 INTO TEMPTATION kicked off his season with a good second on the Monmouth turf behind a second time starter who was coming off of a solid debut at Tampa. Winning siblings include Grade 2 winner Ami's Mesa and Grade 3 winner Ami's Holiday, who excelled at longer distances. #6 WARRIOR'S HEART got a wide trip on debut when facing impressive second time starter Ari Gold Speedwagn. The pedigree for a turf route is solid on both sides.

Race 11 #8 It's Fate #13 Sharp Brew #14 Desolator #8 Candy Crushem #4 Pool Playa #8 IT'S FATE returned from Fair Grounds in a Tapeta sprint in which the field was very well strung out and there was little movement in the stretch. He has been at his best routing on the turf. #13 SHARP BREW was a very good second in his lone turf start, racing with pressure on the front end and just missing by a half length. He was unable to finish effectively off of a wide trip in his 2019 debut. #14 DESOLATOR gave way late after dueling for the lead throughout the race in his route debut on May 20. He now gets back to the turf. #8 CANDY CRUSHEM finished evenly when facing a very solid group of three year olds on May 20. He drops in for $40,000 and gets back onto the turf. #4 POOL PLAYA comes off of an okay sixth place finish in a tough group of sprinters on the Tapeta. He has early speed and now experiments with a turf route.
