World Class Vocalist & Pianist back by Popular Demand! With her NYC based Group!

Long regarded as one of Contemporary Jazz's leading vocalists, Diane Schuur is aseclectic as she is brilliant. Born in Tacoma, Washington in 1953, Schuur was blind frombirth; but she was gifted with perfect pitch and initially taught herself piano by ear. Shelater received formal piano training at The Washington State School for the Blind, whichshe attended until she was 11 years of age.

Nicknamed "Deedles" as a child, she grew up surrounded by the world of Jazz embracedby both of her parents: Her father was an amateur pianist, and her mother kept aformidable collection of Duke Ellington and Dinah Washington albums in her home. Notsurprisingly, Dinah Washington is often listed as Schuur's major vocal influence, and shelearned the iconic singer's "What a Difference a Day Makes" while she was still a toddler. She also developed her own rich, resonant vocal style at a very young age. With adistinguished recording career that spans three decades, including two Grammyawards (Timeless and Diane Schuur and The Count Basie Orchestra on GRP Records), aswell as three additional Grammy nominations, Schuur's music has explored almost everycorner of the 20th Century musical landscape.

Her musical collaborations include the aforementioned Count Basie Orchestra, BarryManilow, B.B. King, Ray Charles, and Jose Feliciano, among countless others. Thesecollaborations have resulted in numerous #1 Billboard Chart recordings, including PureSchuur and Heart to Heart with B.B. King; Ms. Schuur has appeared on PBS and manyother television specials...as well as a very special visit to the beloved TV show, SesameStreet. Diane has been invited to perform at The White House on multiple occasions, andwas one of the select musical guests invited to perform for Stevie Wonder at the KennedyCenter Honors when he received his prestigious award.

She continues to tour and perform extensively at major concert halls and venues aroundthe world. Ms. Schuur has recently recorded an homage to two of her very importantmentors, Frank Sinatra and Stan Getz. The CD, entitled I REMEMBER YOU (WITH LOVE TOSTAN AND FRANK) will be released on June 10, 2104, and will also commemorate her"official" discovery 35 years ago by Stan Getz at the 1979 Monterey Jazz Festival. Therecording features all new arrangements by Alan Broadbent, and in addition to Mr.Broadbent on piano, it includes an all-star band of Ben Wolfe, Ulysses Owens Jr., RomeroLubambo, Roni Ben Hur, and Joel Frahm.

STEPHANE WREMBEL GYPSY JAZZQUARTET$20.00 Friday 5/15 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Gypsy Jazz Guitarist from France leads his Quartet. As featured inthe Woody Allen Movie "Midnight in Paris".

Featuring: Stephane Wrembel-guitar, Roy Williams-guitar, KellsNollenberger-acoustic bass, & Nick Anderson-drums.He’s been called “a revelation” by Rolling Stone. Woody Allen recruited him to score thetheme to the 2012 Academy Award winning film Midnight in Paris, and he performed liveduring this year’s Oscar’s telecast. To say that French-born guitarist/composer StephaneWrembel—who learned his craft among the Gypsies at campsites in the Frenchcountryside—has already had a remarkable career would be an understatement. But thisvirtuoso, who is now Brooklyn-based, has truly just begun to make his mark as one of themost original guitar voices in contemporary music.

Origins, Wrembel’s fifth and most highly anticipated release yet, finds the multi-facetedmusician corralling a myriad of influences into a hybrid that simultaneously reflectswhere he’s been and points to where he’s headed. Although he built his reputation as astylist in the mode of the iconic French Sinti guitarist Django Reinhardt, Wrembel nowrevels in transcending and expanding. “I’m digging deeper and deeper into my roots,” hesays about the album. Origins touches upon everything from blues to flamenco to rock; allof these influences come together as something identifiable only as Stephane Wrembel. Itis the most sophisticated representation to date of Wrembel’s superior compositionalskills; his melodies burst with a panoply of textures and colors, moods and emotions.

“It’s a different state of mind all together,” adds Wrembel, talking about Origins. “I alwayscompose with a picture in mind. That Impressionism approach is the main thing that I’vecarried with me from Fontainebleau.”

CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE TRIO$30.00 Saturday 5/16 8:00 pm Buy Tickets 10:00 pm Buy Tickets

State of the Art Acoustic Bassist Leads All-Star Trio for two big shows at Nighttown! Featuring: Christian McBride-acoustic bass, Christian Sands-piano, & Ulysses Owens-drums.

Four-time GRAMMY®-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride can be likened to a force ofnature, fusing the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and grounding of a seasonedjourneyman. Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing, McBride’spath has described a continuous positive arc since his arrival on the scene. With a careernow blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the mostrequested, most recorded, and most respected figures in the music world today.

Raised in a city steeped in soul, McBride moved to New York in 1989 to pursue classicalstudies at the Juilliard School. There he was promptly recruited to the road by saxophonistBobby Watson. Call it a change in curriculum: a decade’s worth of study throughhundreds of recording sessions and countless gigs with an ever-expanding circle ofmusicians. He was finding his voice, and others were learning to listen for it.

In 2000 the lessons of the road came together in the formation of what would become hislongest-running project, the Christian McBride Band. Praised by writer Alan Leeds as "oneof the most intoxicating, least predictable bands on the scene today," the CMB—saxophonist Ron Blake, keyboardist Geoffrey Keezer, and drummer Terreon Gully—havebeen collectively evolving McBride's all-inclusive, forward-thinking outlook on musicthrough their incendiary live shows, as chronicled on 2006’s Live at Tonic. Part excursion, part education, the CMB is a vehicle built on a framework of experience and powered byunfettered creativity: a mesmerizing dance on the edge of an electro-acoustic fault line.

In 2009 McBride began focusing this same energy through a more traditional lens withthe debut of his critically-acclaimed Inside Straight quintet, and again with the ChristianMcBride Big Band, whose 2012 release The Good Feeling won the GRAMMY for Best LargeEnsemble Jazz Album. As his career entered its third decade, McBride added the role ofmentor, tapping rising stars pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. for

mentor, tapping rising stars pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. forthe Christian McBride Trio’s GRAMMY-nominated album Out Here.

Currently he hosts and produces “The Lowdown: Conversations With Christian” onSiriusXM satellite radio and National Public Radio’s “Jazz Night in America,” a weekly radioshow and multimedia collaboration between WBGO, NPR and Jazz at Lincoln Center, showcasing outstanding live jazz from across the country.

Whether behind the bass or away from it, Christian McBride is always of the music. Fromjazz (Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner,Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, to R&B (Isaac Hayes, ChakaKhan, Natalie Cole, Lalah Hathaway, and the one and only Godfather of Soul himself,James Brown) to pop/rock (Sting, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Don Henley, BruceHornsby) to hip-hop/neo-soul (The Roots, D'Angelo, Queen Latifah) to classical (KathleenBattle, Edgar Meyer, Shanghai Quartet, Sonus Quartet), he is a luminary with one handever reaching for new heights, and the other extended in fellowship—and perhaps thehint of a challenge—inviting us to join him.

Steve would sometimes actas road manager for Reverend Davis and met many of the great “rediscovered” blues men likeSon House, Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt.

Steve starting playing in Greenwich Village - during this time there were numerous musiciansobsessed with American roots music. Steve, Maria Muldaur, John Sebastian and David Grisman –who found the common denominator in jug band music. They and some other friends formed theEven Dozen Jug Band and were courted by Elektra Records for whom they recorded an album in1964.

Steve was asked to audition for the Danny Kalb Quartet. He got the job. Al Kooper joined, andthey had the Blues Project, a foray of young white middle-class musicians into the amplifiedworld of Chicago blues. The Blues Project, after two glorious years as house band at the Cafe AuGo Go, decided to break up.

After the Blues Project, Steve, Al Kooper, Bobby Colomby and Jim Fielder decided to work up aset, mainly of Al’s new songs, for a benefit concert whereby enough money would be raised tosend Al to London where he wanted to live. Joined by Fred Lipsius on alto sax, the concert raisedenough money for Al to get a cab to the airport. There was no choice but start another band.Influenced by the Electric Flag and the Buckinghams, a horn section was utilized with rockarrangements that were a touch more sophisticated. Thus, the formation of Blood, Sweat & Tears,a Columbia Records contract, and the album Child is Father to the Man. Recorded and mixed inonly two weeks, the album sold moderately well but was a huge critical success.

Al left BS & T after only six months. Getting the record company to continue with the bandwithout Kooper was difficult. Auditions were held and David Clayton-Thomas was hired. Columbiareluctantly agreed to go ahead with a new album. That album sold six million copies worldwideand fostered three number one singles. Steve continued with BS & T for five years, during whichtime the group won three Grammies, were voted best band by the Playboy Jazz and Pop Poll twoyears in a row, and won three major Downbeat awards, to name a few. Steve wrote many songsduring his tenure with BS&T, including his well-loved “Sometimes in Winter”.

In 1972 Steve met Lou Reed and became friends. Steve was asked to produce his next recordRock & Roll Animal and then Sally Can’t Dance. After a number of productions during this period, including the wonderful Nightlights by Elliott Murphy, Steve wanted to return again to playing

including the wonderful Nightlights by Elliott Murphy, Steve wanted to return again to playingmusic.

Although American Flyer was not a performing band, it gave Steve another creative outlet inwhich to work and talented people to work with. Steve was joined by writer Eric Kaz, Craig Fullerfrom Pure Prairie League, and Doug Yule from The Velvet Underground. The first of their twoalbums was produced by George Martin.

Steve was offered an opportunity to get closer to the business of music in 1977 with hisappointment as East Coast Director of A&R and later as Vice President of Mercury Records.

Later Steve became enamored with all things Irish and in 1987 became Managing Director ofGreen Linnet Records, the foremost record label of traditional Irish music in America.

Steve still performs, is a professional photographer, and is now in the process of writing hismemoirs.

Next generation of jazz talent from the University School hit the stage at Nighttown! Led by David Kay.

University School’s Jazz Ensembles are unique in the Cleveland area – with David Kay (a25-year faculty member of both US’s music department and the Interlochen Arts CampJazz Faculty) at the helm, a small school’s jazz groups have found themselves playing allover the region, soloing with ex-Miles Davis sidemen, been the recipient of Meet theComposer grants, and all the while being an important factor in helping students realizetheir artistic vision, some of whom, when they first joined, had little clue of what theycould attain. US has three jazz groups: the 1:00 Jazz Ensemble, the 2:00 Jazz Ensemble(these named with a nod to the names of groups at the renowned jazz program at theUniversity of North Texas), and the Jazz Combo, selected from the top players in the 1:00group. The 1:00 is a big band and the 2:00 can range from 5 to 13 players. Numerousplayers over the years have been particularly bright lights, winning composition awards, studying through programs from Berklee and going on to study music at Oberlin and theCincinnati Conservatory of Music. The groups play music that is off the beaten path forthe vast majority of pre-college groups, as well as original compositions andarrangements by its members.

US groups have received commendation in Down Beat magazine as 3rd Place Winner inthe only Down Beat Jazz Festival ever held, at Universal Studios. Besides Nighttown, theyhave performed at Tower City, Landerhaven, The Cleveland Grand Prix Parade, FirstEnergy Stadium Club Level, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the House of Blues.

Guitarist extraordinaire Larry Coryell teams up with pianist and keyboard artist DavidGarfield from George Benson's group for Two Big Nights at Nighttown!Featuring: Jim Stevens-sax, John King-bass, & James Jackson-drums.

Larry Coryell has been described by Whitney Balliett as “the most innovative andoriginal guitarist since Charlie Christian.” Beginning with his first recordings with ChicoHamilton and his tenure with the Gary Burton Quartet, Larry has remained in thepantheon of great jazz guitarists for more than forty years. His personal philosophy ofmusic has kept his playing fresh and exciting and makes each of his personalappearances or recordings a special event.

In 1974, Larry formed The 11th House, one of the most popular and successful fusionbands of its time. The band, comprising Coryell, Randy Brecker, Alphonse Mouzon, MikeMandel and Danny Trifan, demolished the barriers between jazz and rock and came upwith a sound that merged the best elements of both – the raw emotional power of rockwith the more structured ideas of jazz.

All of Larry’s work, both singly and collectively, highlights Larry’s uncanny ability to revisitjazz standards and imbue them with the new life and ideas. He brings to them his years ofexperience in playing, listening and learning and synthesizes them into somethinggreater than the sum of their parts.

David Garfield’s mission statement is “I make music.” And “make music” he does, as aworld-renowned keyboard artist, producer, and composer. Be it jazz, rock, funk, or worldbeat – he is the creative force behind the production of many internationally acclaimedrecordings.

David started his career with jazz greats such as Willie Bobo, Freddie Hubbard, and TomScott in the 70’s. After being on the L.A. scene for several years, he moved into the vaststudio world and earned a reputation for fine craftsmanship and versatility.

His first international release on Creatchy Records, “Tribute to Jeff,” featured 78musicians and artists including Don Henley, Eddie Van Halen, Michael McDonald, andRichard Marx, a virtual who’s who in the music industry.
