Founder and Artistic Director: The UCF-Orlando Jazz Festival

6th season. The inaugural festival featured One For All with Eric Alexander, Mulgrew Miller, Steve Davis, Jim Rotondi, John Webber and Joe Farnsworth, along with the UCF Jazz Professors.

NPR’s JAZZSET broadcast the festival internationally, 10/08.The educational component during the day features clinics and workshops by guest artists.

Guest artists in following years included Grant Stewart, Lou Donaldson, Charles McPherson, Mike LeDonne, Kevin Mahogany, Guisando Caliente, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Terell Stafford, and Lenny Pickett.

Instrument The assessment rubric follows the data. The juries are used in part to assess implementation and progress of the curriculum. Interpretation of the data is below, and a response and conclusion are included on page nine.

Interpretation of the data: It appears that jazz studies students by enlarge are assimilating the curriculum very well. In most areas of assessment, students are scoring between 88.5- 89.5%, a very narrow, and consistent margin. Areas scoring just below 89% include note accuracy, articulation, and rhythmic improvisation. Harmonic improvisation is at 88.5%, and the lowest scoring section is scale studies, at just below 88%. There appears to be parity among the studios, however since a few have only 1 or 2 students assessed, data sorted by studio is skewed in that the data relies solely on one or two students. The guitar and drum studios are well populated and the data is fairly consistent. While the data reflects good and consistent scores for etude/other, the individual data reflects that not all studios are requiring or assessing this kind of work. Figures reveal that there is less equity in application of scale studies, as compared to other areas of assessment. Undergraduate as compared to graduate assessments; while there are only one graduate student reporting for the fall, and two for the spring, it would appear that the graduate level preparation and assessment scores are considerably lower than the undergraduates.

Response to the Data The students are achieving good success with regard to their studies. In comparing previous years’ assessments, applied study (excluding etude preparation, and scale studies) are high. Etude study, scale preparation, (including bebop scales from jazz theory) as well as repertoire assimilation are not as consistent as in other areas. Harmonic improvisation scores vary, however it is assumed that bolstering scale and repertoire studies will help in this area. It is realistic to continue our assessments, and try and raise the overall level of assimilation by UCF jazz studies students, as well.

Recommendations: A collection of the core repertoire has been created, for the faculty. It is encouraged

that students begin assimilating these compositions in three keys. See collection forward for complete details.

Applied instructors focus on the compositions for the freshman and sophomore classes. These students have less interaction with jazz course work as compared to upperclassmen, and attention in this way creates a more inclusive environment for the underclassmen.

Perhaps the Freshman-Sophomore theory and class piano courses reference jazz studies exercises, be it compositional harmonic convergence, scale studies and application, or jazz piano voicings ( from Jazz Theory 1 &2) into the theory classes. In addition, perhaps the jazz faculty can reference “classical” theory, more often.

Continue with the jam sessions; they force students to administer an ad-hoc self study regarding their preparation. They also reinforce an important element of jazz improvisation and the jazz performance; that it is by nature a social music.

All studios add a component of etudes, if not already in place. Playing the core compositions can fall under this category, as well as “classical” etudes, etc, and piano voicings for drummers, as well as drum/percussion etudes. Transcription performance may also fall under this category.

Scale Studies; it is recommended that all studios at all levels address scale patterns in the handbook. We will implement a more cohesive scale study assessment in the juries. A lottery system will be implemented, in which students will draw from scale and pattern options to be performed at tempo, in the juries. Tempos to be discussed, and implemented.

We will share this data with the jazz studies majors at our fall meeting. The hope is to continue growth in applied areas, and foster continued growth with regard to improvisation, scale and repertory issues.
