Grouping Sub-Requirements… for groupies
Groupies
Grouping in DARwin
• What can we group in DARwin?
• Grouping courses via separate sub-requirements
• Grouping courses in a single sub-requirement
• Grouping requirements on the Degree Program screen (Margo)
Why do we use grouping sub-requirement?
• Unable to use separate sub-requirements for each group• More than 32 groups• Need to establish the groups for further testing
MATCHCTL = G, B, or ;
• MATCHCTL = G• Group
• MATCHCTL = B• Group – first course required
• MATCHCTL = ;• Range and Group
• All 3 MATCHCTL can be used in one sub-requirement
Example – Goal 5
• Goal 5 requirement:• 9 credits from 3 areas of History & Social Sciences
required with a minimum of 2 credits from each area.
• Areas are: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology

Audit Appearance
WHAT? Why is it okay with just HIST courses?
Audit Appearance
COM Setting - LOCKHCMIN
Prevents any courses from being adjusted into or out of a grouping sub-requirement with an HCMIN value greater than zero (excluding the 99 value).
Audit Appearance – after LOCKHCMIN
Readability of an Audit
• In-stream notes – MATCHCTL = N allows you to title the groups AND to have a unique pseudo course for each group
Readability of an Audit
without MATCHCTL = N
withMATCHCTL = N
Tips and Tricks for Grouping
• Do you need an alternate for each group?• P = Pseudo – nohide
VS• $ = Pseudo
P = Pseudo – nohide
$ = Pseudo
$ = Pseudo stops the printing of the select from list
$ = Pseudo and MATCHCTL = N
$ = Pseudo AND N = In-stream note starts the printing of the select from list
• Do you need an alternate for each group?
• Use P = Pseudo – nohide
OR
• Use $ = Pseudo AND N = In-stream note

Tips and Tricks for Grouping
• Using a list of courses MTCHCTL=L
• Have TWO L- Course Lists• One list WITH G = Group
AND• One list WITHOUT G = Group
Self-Defining Groups
• Too many potential groups
• Utilizes the Reference Course functionality
• Uses DERC (%) which allows DARwin to decide the group
%**%1*** ENGL%**%
Self-Defining Groups
• Example:• Students must take at least 4 courses at the 2000-
level from any department
Self-Defining Groups – 2000 level
%**%2***
It does not need a match control of G
Self-Defining Groups – 2000 level
The self-defining group is based on the department - %**%. The highest contributing group will be selected.

• Example:• Music requires 7 credits of a single instrument – 2

immediately to the right of the 1st DERC (%)• Example: MUSC*2%0
Grouping Reminders
• Grouping selects the group with the highest contributing group.
• Everything else equal – grouping will choose the group with the first taken course.
• Keep it as simple as possible!
And one last reminder …
… You too can be a GROUPIE!
