environmental implications of using science and technology• 10. encourage an understanding of the relationships between scientific
disciplines and the overarching nature of the scientific method
Group 4 Project
The project may have a hands-on practical action phase or one involving purely theoretical aspects. It could be undertaken in a wide range of ways• Designing and carrying out a lab investigation or fieldwork• Collating, manipulating and analyzing data from other sources, such
as scientific journals, environmental organizations, science and technology industries and government reports• Designing and using a model or simulation
Personal Skills• The group 4 project is to be assessed for the personal skills criterion
only• This will be the only place where this criterion is assessed
Planning
• 1-2 periods• Brainstorm central topics• Share ideas and information• Define what activities are to be carried out for the rest of the class
time available to you• Define specific tasks for each group member
Action
• 6-8 class periods• Investigate your topic• Collaborate• Findings need to be shared with group• Pay attention to safety, ethical and environmental considerations• IB Animal Experimentation Policy
• Labs conducted in or outside of class • Feel free to ask Mrs. McCobb for materials
Tips on Collaboration
• Work together in ALL phases of the project• If you do individual work, such as small parts of research, schedule times for
feedback and evaluation as a team
• Ensure that all members of the group understand all aspects of the group’s work. • No one should be an “island”
• Keep a record of your discussions and decisions during the project, and make sure all members are making significant contributions• Attendance counts!!! All members need to come to class during ALL days of
Group 4 work.
Evaluation
• 5 periods• Students share their thoughts, findings, successes, and failures with
other students during their 15-20 minute presentations
Requirements
• Make a PPT presentation that your group will present to the class• Use graphs, visuals where appropriate• You are graded on the quality of the PPT, the quality of the information, and
the quality of your oral presentation
• Minimum of 12 mins; maximum of 20 minutes• After 20 minutes you will be cut off
• ALL members of group must speak during the presentation• Dress up on the day of your presentation• Turn in all required materials
Requirements
Things to turn in on due date: MONDAY 11/24
• Digital PPT presentations emailed to Mrs. M (Must be in PPT format; no Pages)• Printed out PPT (hard copy)• Informal Research notes for whole group (untyped)• Bibliographies
NO LATE MATERIALS ACCEPTED AND NO PPT MODIFICATIONS
Requirements
Things due on the day of your presentation
• Presentation notes for each person (typed)• Any posters or supplementary materials used on presentation day
Helpful Presentation Hints• Do not use small font sizes on your PPT, we will be unable to read them• Avoid using long paragraphs• Include plenty of graphics• Don’t read from your PPT, and don’t just read what is on the PPT• We can do that ourselves!• Elaborate while talking. Good presenters only bullet the important
information, and explain (verbally) in detail• Don’t read your presentations notes word for word. Practice so they
are just a guide.
